waiting a year for said 10 eps is what drives me insane.  I dont know why they cant do 10 in the spring and 10 in the fall.  

Not too impressed with season so far...I really thought the dragon lady would be more part of the world than just trying to survive.  I thought those guys they were with were going to be the trouble makers for the rest of the world and make things exciting.  No dice there.  I will give this show a bit longer but losing interest.  First season was just way too good. 

Was season 1 the entire first book?

Jaw, you hit it on the head. w/o spoilers, there is no way else to say it. As far as havinga third season, I thought they had already signed on to do a third season at the end of season 1.

To answer the other questions w/o spoiling it: Dazzler, don't get too excited about Dany and her dragons. If that's why you're watching this show you are going to be hella disappointed. And Stormrider, yes season 1 was book 1.

I suppose  if the tv series keeps on going, they will also have to combine Feast for Crows (book 4) and Dance With Dragons (book5) somehow.  No way they can do the tv series in the manner of the books.   But then if they do combine the two books into two seasons, they may have issues with a proper climax for first of the two seasons' finale.
