Game of Thrones Will Continue Without Books

From the HBO Programming Chief

By Robert T. Trate     July 15, 2014

Game of Thrones returns April 12th, 2015.
Has anyone else been losing sleep over the final Game of Thrones books not being finished? HBO certainly isn’t and they have released a statement that the show will continue on without the final books being published yet.
“We’re not concerned about it,” HBO Programming chief Michael Lombardo admitted at the Television Critics Assoc. summer press tour in Beverly Hills on Thursday, in response to worries that the TV series may outpace author George R.R. Martin’s ability to finish the next novel.

“We’re not off on our own,” he noted. “George is an integral part of the creative team [and] every move is being choreographed very closely with him. We’ll have to figure it out with George. We’re in conversations with him.”

HBO has also come forward and stated, that a film will not wrap up the series.

Maniacs, is this a good thing or a bad thing? Much like The Walking Dead, the Game of Thrones TV series has deviated from some of the story lines. Does this make you want to finish the TV series and then read the books? Are they two different animals all together? Sound off below!

HA!  It'll be fun holding the spoilers over the heads of book fans for a change.........

As someone who started reading the books when he first wrote A Game of Thrones and immediately had it at the top of my list of favorites, I will say that if the show starts moving past the books and telling story that hasn't been published...I will stop watching the show.  Simple as that.  For me the show is kind of a bonus that I did without before and can do without again.  The books are the real deal and I don't want to ruin them for myself.

If they do move past the books...and they likely will at GRRM's rate...I wouldn't be surprised if their ratings dropped due to losing people who started off as book readers.

Hey, George. We've already past you so we decided we're gonna end the show with big green aliens coming down in giant spaceships at King's Landing destroying everything but Will Smith will land in a U.S. starship and save the day and they appoint him king. That okay with you?

Good news for me.  I love this show.  Have not read the book yet.  May someday.  :  -)

Rob, I think you meant 'will continue on with the final books not being published'....

Did he mean to say a movie wouldn't end the series?

I doubt the show will go past the books since the off-season of the show is like ... 5 years and shit. HURRY UP HBO!!!! Damn!! They need to cancel 'The Leftovers' (Gawd i hate that show) and focus on producing GOT quicker. haha

With True Blood HBO went way off the books the series was based on, and I think they both worked as separate entities.

Martin is involved with GoT and I'm sure it will be fine.

As long as HBO keeps giving GRRM a big paycheck I'm sure he'll be fine with what they are doing.  Who knows, maybe George has a little touch of writer's block.  I imagine It ain't easy to write a good novel. This way he can work up something with HBO's screen writers for the TV series and then just roll it into a book later.  To a lot of us Game of Thrones is something special but to Martin it's just some crazy tale he dreamed up, which is making him a wealthy man...not bad for a guy from Bayonne, NJ.

VioLatorr 7/15/2014 7:14:04 PM

I'm pretty sure it's more special to him than us

that works too....   :-)
