TRANSFORMERS - Jul 02, 2007 - 03:36pm
Thanks, mXm. If I knew I definitely had to discuss something in a review in order to make a point, I would plant spoiler flags all around it. But in some cases, it's not sure and you want to just give a light warning. Those that want it can read a breakdown of the ENTIRE story, gags and all, on imDb.com. Much of the time, to get some sense of what the critic is talking about, a certain amount of plot needs to be revealed as evidence of that point or to give readers a better view of the picture. BTW, I hope my C+ for LIVE FREE didn't scare anyone off from seeing it, as other than the disappointment of my expectations I did have quite a few positive things to say in that review. It's just that when Willis sets me up by saying it's the best since DIE HARD, I expect a plausible film that delivers action while playing by the rules. I consider McClane suddenly knowing how to fly a helicopter and the numerous examples of magic computers to be breaking that pact of plausibility with the audience. But who knows - I may calm down a bit by the time the DVD is out to give it a B. And I know how much you all hate it when we grade anything a B. _BT

EVAN ALMIGHTY - Jun 22, 2007 - 02:18pm
If Hollywood releases three grade B movies in one day, we at MANIA will give them three B grades. Are we to hand out Ds and As randomly, just to break things up? If we see three A movies, then you'll see three A grades. Will you complain then? Let's review: Mania does not make the movies. We just report on them and review them. And like it or not, most movies (or anything else, except rap music) that is released are more likely to be grade B than any other grade. And to monkeypie, if I were reviewing this as an edgy, hip comedy, I would indeed give it a D. But it's not that, and it was judged according to what it IS. _BT

ON THE LOT: The Results Show - May 31, 2007 - 08:54am
If vyou're going to have viewers vote on films, WHY introduce and give so much exposure to the directors, WHY make them come up with their own script so we're judging them as writers, and WHY have 'judges' weigh in with their opinions? Knew Jason would be saved because of the laws of "reality" game shows: controversy & conflict keeps you on the air. Despite some good films, the show is just boring.

QUIET MAN is one of those titles that has always disappointed me on home video. On the laserdisc "deluxe" edition, I had to boost the brightness just to see what was going on. The film looked better cropped on TV in the 1970s than it does now. I'll try to learn more from Lionsgate, but I fear these are reissues of the Republic transfers. _BT

Weinstein's to split "Grindhouse"? - Apr 10, 2007 - 01:19pm
It has always been the plan to separate the features for foreign distribution, not a "reaction" to opening weekend, which was still fairly healthy considering.

Ferrell wins gold back to back! - Apr 09, 2007 - 01:43pm
I've heard that GRINDHOUSE is playing in about 2600 theaters, but multiplexes added it to an extra 1000 screens. However, I'll still agree with Jarrod. With double the running time, the extra screensdon't make up for fewer possible screenings. GRINDHOUSE was still shown fewer times last weekend than REAPING, which cost more to make, and still beat it in raw dollars. With no new family films coming on Friday, and the others aging, GRINDHOUSE should make a bigger dent. Unless PATHFINDER is something remarkable.

"Lost: Exposé" - Mar 30, 2007 - 10:36am
Yes, Shannon & Boone showed up as a warning of love gone wrong, which motivated Paulo in hiding the diamonds. A better episode, I think, than appears at first glance, as it speaks to a major theme of the series: how things hidden from view can become important if you're not paying attention. I'd wager that the fact that the "murder mystery" went unsolved will have greater ramifications. It's already resulted in changes in the relationship between Sawyer and the rest of the group. And then there's the matter that Lock brings up: "Things don't stay buried on this island." Like many, I considered whether to continue for the first time a few months ago, but I knew that they'd be getting back to the more compelling mysteries before long. Unlike the gear shift taken by TWIN PEAKS in its second season, enough folks have been sticking to get over the hump, with the additional advantage that LOST was only moved an hour from its time slot. I say they should stick more with the SOPRANOS model of running a full season without a break before going into reruns - y'know, the old fashioned way - tho it seems like too much to hope that they won't second guess every decision and go for the 5,000 or so extra viewers they might get by breaking things up by showing a xmas special.

Let me repeat for you righteous RiffTrax defenders that I didn't mean to imply that it's a failure. It's just a whole lot easier to select a DVD audio track rather than make a purchase online, download a file, choose a device to play it on, get a DVD, load the disc up, etc. It's a worthwhile project, but the Film Crew DVDs will require less effort. _BT

For the record, this is only related to any other movie with the same name by theme. This one seems like the details of time travel just got out of the writer's hands - or the studio demanded some clumsy changes inserted that caused inconsistencies. The maddening thing - spoilers - is that Bullock starts to get a handle on what's going on, but does nothing to save her husband - or her daughter, for that matter. And it's all attributed to a "lack of faith". Good people making a bad, dumb movie.

What the hell were they thinking? - Mar 18, 2007 - 05:50pm
Hey, this is some amazingly heavy discussion for Mania's fluff gossip column with a pin-up shot up top! On international adoption: currently a couple close to me is in the middle of a 2-year process to adopt from China. It's been terribly difficult and expensive. Why do they do it? Because adopting domestically is even more difficult and expensive, and at the end of it either of the birth parents can come back and take your child away from you. The issue with celebrity adoptions is that they use their money and fame to pick out any child they choose and gvernments grease the wheels to accomodate them, speeding up the process. If they really want to adopt, that's great, but don't use fame to cut in line while others are following the rules. And don't make it look as easy as shopping at the mall, trivializing it.

DVD for make benefit Borat - Mar 07, 2007 - 11:28am
To smegforbrain: Yes, some of those flicks were on fewer screens, and some were in theaters longer (BABEL, given legs by Oscar buzz, just surpassed SNAKES's take last weekend). But THE ANT BULLY and EMPLOYEE were on almost as many screens and made about $6M less. GARFIELD 2 was in about the same number of screens as those two, made about the same ($28M), but the public thinks of it (and SNAKES) as a big bomb - which in turn, seems to have an effect on how the DVD fares. You're right tho, a lot of factors go into the perception. Everyone went to see the 1998 GODZILLA, making it a financial hit, but just about everyone was in some way disappointed. Thus, most people tag it as a flop, which is likely why there hasn't been a sequel. Despite this, it has done well on DVD, so go figure. _BT

Yes, nax37, it's part of the gag. Actually, the 'R' is backward and the DVD logo is "Demorez", with the slogan: "Is Life? No. Demorez." underneath. Also, rather than the standard practice of reproducing the sleeve art on the keepcase insert cover, all the copy is in "Kazakhese", which out to cause a little confusion at Blockbuster. Inside, an insert tells you about "More movie discs available from u s & a".

As in some of the better martial arts films, the philosophy behind the tactics are never forgotten, and actually become plot points.

Hmmm. Gotta pay more attention. So, why does Hulk need armor now? Is he invulnerable to bullets except for a few places so he needs a shield to block spears and arrows and such? Does Hawkeye have anti-Hulk arrows that can kill Hulk but can be blocked by a tin shield? And what does a guy who can tear battleships in half with his bare hands need with a sword? Is it a back scratcher?

"Crank" - Feb 16, 2007 - 02:31pm
Hate to waste my time explaining this again, but it seems Maniacs are way too hung up on these grades, so much so that they do so at the expense of the reviews. They're entirely subjective and each film/book/cd/etc is judged on its own merits, not necessarily on a scale compared to other reviewable items. And a movie graded A on first viewing in optimal conditions won't be likely to get the same grade on the tenth viewing when the reviewer has a toothache. Example: Take a sampling of 10,000 movies. Let's say you put CITIZEN KANE or SEVEN SAMURAI at A+ and as snallygaster contends CITIZEN TOXIE as an "unwatchable" F. Then let's say you come upon a film made with much less imagination, originality, skill, sense of fun, etc. (APE CANYON or BOLERO or GIGLI). Wow, then you have to move up every other movie on your list and declare a new low. Then let's say RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK is one of your favorite movies of all time, but you can't really say that it's as good a film as KANE, so you give it an A or A- rather than an A+. That means you've taken RAIDERS out of the top 8% (roughly) movies ever made. The larger your sampling (films you've seen and judged), the harder it is to confine it to a narrow grading system. On the list of films I've reviewed alone, CRANK is thousands of titles below KING KONG. By definition, an average student gets straight C grades. However, in the USA today, any student consistently graded C is considered a failure, so there's also the fact that grades mean different things to different people. CRANK gets an A- as a film because it achieves what it sets out to do just that much and provided me with just that much entertainment on first viewing. As a DVD, it gets an A+ for making such terrific and innovative use of the format. But the grades are just an oversymplified signpost registering a reaction, not an ultimate scale. And as I've pointed out before, given a choice, critics are more likely to review something they think they'll like, and more films in release fall into the B range than any other letter. And almost every film is good in some ways and bad in others. So any grade must be qualified and explained. All of which is a good reason why we write all those words in a review rather than just typing the grade alone. Let me end this li'l message with a question for readers: Do you read a review to determine whether you think you might enjoy a movie or not, to have someone tell you whether a movie is "good", or to see if the critic's opinion matches your own? _BT

UK's "Driller Killer" to be remade - Jan 23, 2007 - 12:08pm

"Lady in the Water" nominated for a Razzie - Jan 23, 2007 - 12:04pm
I'm with DarkJedi here. The Razzies only nominate theatrical releases that gained enough attention that the public will give their awards some attention. We all know that there were worse movies released last year than any of these - Silent Hill (gorgeous but nonsensical), Stick It, Beer League, The Covenant, Date Movie, Big Mama's House 2, Madea's Family Reunion, Van Wilder 2, and Hood of Horror for example. But making fun of Sharon Stone gets the headlines. LitW was an interesting misfire. If it'd gone more in the direction of a comedy drama it would have been more successful. It's flaw was in taking its mythology too seriously. And it's far better than The Village.

Anime, Ain’t It? - Jan 19, 2007 - 01:12pm
This debate over labeling is ridiculous. When Disney and Warner Bros. cartoons were shown in Japan in the 1940s and '50s, they were called anime. One of Hanna-Barbera's top animators (who died this week) was Japanese. The Simpsons is animated in Korea. Animators from the USA, Japan, Korea and Europe have been collaborating on projects since the 1960s. Some time in the 1990s, some fans of Japanese animation started getting snobbish about distinguishing between the "real anime" (that they of course are the elite champions of) and "lesser" cartoons from elsewhere. Well, let's all grow up. All animation today follows techniques invented by Emile Cohl 100 years ago, and they were advertised as "animated cartoons" the first time anyone tried to put a label on them. It's all just drawings given the illusion of movement, so it strikes me as silly that some people that like animation from Japan will fly into a rage if you refer to Evangelion as a cartoon, and somehow feel betrayed if they find out that any of the personel that worked on one of their favorite anime TV shows or movies isn't of purely Japanese blood. So, it's up to you if you want to worry about whether or not you can call a cartoon movie anime. Perhaps you can set up some sort of racial purity test to determine whether a cartoon is anime or not.

Anime, Ain’t It? - Jan 18, 2007 - 04:35pm
I've been using the term "anime" interchangably with "animation" over in Anime Avalanche because it's a more graceful word. Also because that's the word they use in Japan for all animation - where anime was totally inspired by cartoons from the USA. So why should we ghettoize something we love so much? Would you NOT cover Avatar in an anime column because it's produced by a US studio? How about Ghost in the Shell? It's just easier not to pick nits. 100 years ago they'd be calling it all "trick films" anyway. _BT

New Line chief vows never to work with Peter Jackson - Jan 10, 2007 - 10:38am

New Line chief vows never to work with Peter Jackson - Jan 10, 2007 - 10:36am
I've had personal experience with the way Warners handles licensing. They do have ways of forcing licensors to play ball their way without breaking the law. Jackson's suit will likely find they've got all the t's crossed in the contracts. Despite Shaye's whining, Jackson and company have been very thankful to New Line at every opportunity for taking such a huge gamble on LotR. And Jackson told cast members not to come to Shaye's (plugged) anniversary party for New Line? Yeah, I'm sure Ian McKellan was all hyped to be there. The shame of it is that, in a biz where married couples can be suing each other's production companies and still treat it as "just business" and get along otherwise, these parties are being so bitchy about this in the press and using HOBBIT as a weapon.

Interesting view doublec. Have you seen the film? And what's this about a "well-documented liar"? Is George Bush in the movie? I'm still not sure whether the detected effects labeled global warming are a result of human society or "natural" forces, but I think it's good to reinforce the notion that pollution is bad and that we should take a more conservative approach to how we consume resources. Now, let's discuss evolution. Seen any?
