Games to sport warning labels?

A recent suicide in Milwaukee has been "linked" to the popular online multiplayer game, EVERQUEST. With the suicide, and the mother of the boy planning to sue Sony Online Entertainment, the question has been brought up on whether or not "addictive games" should carry warning labels.

Shawn Woolley, 21, shot himself to death just a few hours after playing EVERQUEST, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. His mother blames the game for his suicide, and has now hired a lawyer and plans to sue Sony Online Entertainment for not properly labeling the game as addictive. "It's like any other addiction," Elizabeth Woolley, Shawn's mother, said last week. "Either you die, go insane or you quit. My son died."

"Shawn was playing 12 hours a day, and he wasn't supposed to because he was epileptic, and the game would cause seizures," she said. "Probably the last eight times he had seizures were because of stints on the computer." While Elizabeth Woolley blames EVERQUEST, and Sony, her son had been diagnosed with depression and a schizoid personality disorder. Yet, these had no apparent effect on him committing suicide.

This has brought up a lot of questions. Was the game properly labeled? Well, looking through the instruction manual for EVERQUEST, it does say not to play if you have epilepsy. Should the game be labeled as "addictive"? Who knows. If things like this keep happening, sure. I'm not sure if one case warrants warning labels, though.

Sony Online Entertainment has failed to comment on the lawsuit. Be sure to read the full article at the link above.
