What They Say

A three-disk box set containing both volumes 7 and 8 of Gatchaman, plus a disk full of extras.
The Collection comes in a chipboard box with art by Alex Ross. The Review!
Collecting the seventh and eighth volumes of the series into one mini box set along with a disc of extras, this continues to be the Gatchaman experience that's hard to pass up.Packaging:
The chipboard box for this release holds all three keepcases nice and snugly within its gorgeous artwork. Alex Ross' work, which we cover in detail in the individual volumes review, is simply gorgeous here and this wraparound image is fantastic. The image is done in a neat way this time as the center part of the image is on the spine with a darkened look from Ken and it spreads out to each of the panels with the rest of the team flanking him while the back panel also has a large close-up of Berg Katse. With the black background and the shadows on the characters outfits it simply looks fantastic. Ross has managed to really capture the look and feel of these characters again and the anime style and merged it with his own style quite beautifully. The unique disc in this set is the third disc with all the extras and it's done up nicely with a orange cover that has their symbol on the front in red which makes it stand out strongly. The back cover provides a shot of Jinpei from the show and lists all the extras to be found on it and rounds it out with the technical information for the disc.Menu:
The menu layout is similar to the main release in that it's blocked out a bit but it's more similar to the extras menu where there's an image broken up along the right while the left side is a red field with all of the extras listed straight down. Extras:
For the fourth installment, Jinpei is the character of focus here. It kicks off with things like his character profile and a series of sketches but it goes on further with a look at the audition footage for the role and then an interview with voice actress Luci Christian who landed the role. Add in some sketches from the episodes here and you already have some good material to go through.
But that isn't all of course. While not as much as the previous volumes, there is more here. There's a gallery of various publication images that were used from the property and things are rounded out with a look at the first volume of the manga with the second chapter. Another neat inclusion is an extra about the Demon 5 in concert.Individual Reviews:In Summary:
Nostalgia does continue to play a role in enjoying this, but this isn't something that I've been pining to have for ages nor even though we'd ever see a new accurate dub and a clean translation for. In watching it though, it's an example of how great anime has been and can be and shows where things have faltered in recent years. Though the scripting in the original is awkward at times and we're thirty years removed from its social conditions and how everything else was written at the time, Gatchaman provides for some very exciting situations, interesting characters and yes, something of a history lessen. In addition, it gets itself a wonderfully done just slightly over the top dub that really captures the essence and feel of the series without all the awfulness that made the original so distant from its source material. Gatchaman is a series that almost no anime fan should be without.
