The Geek Life: Ready for the Summer?

Have a great one

By Robert T. Trate     April 10, 2012

The Geek Life is a weekly look at what is going on in the Geek Culture. Movies, Comics, Books, Video Games, and TV Shows encompass more than just release dates and reviews. This week the Geek Life asks, are you ready for the Summer?

I’m sitting here on precipice of my favorite season. The Summer Blockbusters are just a few short weeks away and already I am getting the itch. This Summer looks to be one of the better ones, hopefully it will turn out to be one of the best. The Summer Blockbusters aren’t the only thing that they I am getting ready for though. I am thrilled with Avengers vs X-Men comic so far. Where as Brian K. Vaughn’s SAGA looks to have all the punch of the original Star Wars film. Comic Con is also on the horizon and that means a slew of smaller shows popping up. As for TV, well it’s a Wasteland until Doctor Who shows up (Sept. 2012). The Summer really is a great time to be a Geek I just wanted to make sure, that you are ready.

Let’s just make sure that you are prepped and ready to go. Many of items listed below you have probably already have done:
Make sure your Comic Book Store’s subscription is up to date. You would hate to find out something like Vaughn’s SAGA #2 sold out. Besides, isn’t it time to delete your Kevin Smith’s Daredevil/Bullseye: The Target  #2 order.

Make sure you are following all your favorite Summer Blockbusters on Twitter and Facebook. Yes, this does make you a massive tool and me too. However, you wouldn’t want to miss any cool promotions or swag.

You must attend the midnight premiere of the big summer tent pole movies. Why you ask? All because if you don’t some douchebag is going to blab and ruin the surprises. Might I also suggest dressing up for the screenings? It used to be uncool to be “that guy”, especially at a rock concert, but at the movies its hip. For movies like The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man, and The Dark Knight Rises T-Shirts, masks, and toy weapons are perfectly acceptable. Just keep Mjǫlnir off during the movie.

Consider dressing up for a Comic Con. Obviously, the San Diego Comic Con is the Superbowl for Cosplayers. Competition is pretty tough there. However, some of the smaller shows like Wizard World, C2E2, and even the Monster Cons are a great fun. They are usually close to home and don’t require you to lug your get-up all the way to San Diego. Remember not all Cosplaying is spandex and prosthetics.

The Summer Movie Toys are hitting the shelves. It’s time to head into Wal-Mart at midnight and pick up the latest GI Joe figures and any of the summer tent pole figures. Warner Brothers is apparently releasing more Batman toys than ever before. Time to pick up some new warriors for the desk at work or at home. Yes, I am telling you it is all right to buy toys.

It’s time to watch the Lord of the Rings again. With the Summer Movies we will see some new trailers for The Hobbit. The LOTR Expanded Editions on Blu-ray are worth picking up. The weekend of June 27th is pretty quiet as well as the July 11th weekend. Schedule yourself a marathon and include Jules Bass’ animated Hobbit in there as well.

Finally, schedule yourself some running around time. Head out to a Laser Tag arena, pick up a bunch of the new Nerf Blasters, or a few Nerf Swords. When we were kids the Summer was all about running around and having fun. As adults, we often get so bogged down by the hustle and bustle of life that we miss out on things. The Summer is something we should never miss out on.

Trate, hate to break it to you but it is still uncool to be that guy that dresses up to see a movie.

hanso, really? Since when? It's fun....maybe not supercool but still, it's fun.

My kids are right into the Nerf guns right now, and they are right cool.  (The guns and the kids)  The Vortex is a big mamma jamma that takes 6 C batteries and is fully automatic.  2 triple a batteries for the scope as well.  I strongly suggest the eyewear for any of the disc launchers, as they really whizz past any dart gun previously designed.  I always have to test the new guns before they get their mitts on them for quality check, naturally.

What's better, catching the Thursday midnight showing, or catching a Friday matinee with the work crew and blowing the job off???

I think I have to agree with Hanso.  Still pretty uncool to dress up for the movies if you are older than a teenager.  That being said, I hope everyone is dressed up when I go so I can laugh at them.  :)

hanso 4/11/2012 11:15:25 AM

Jedi, yes really and since the beginning of time.  Can't judge the funness just the coolness.

Mil, go on Friday.

millean 4/11/2012 1:45:51 PM

That is what I was thinking.  If I stay up late I'll be useless at work the next day anyway, right???

hanso 4/11/2012 1:51:11 PM

Yeah but to me honest I read the blowing the job part and turned it to getting a blow job from your work crew.  In my mind your work crew is made up of slutty hot women and they do it on Fridays.  I have a messed up mind.

millean 4/11/2012 2:01:36 PM

That is messed up.  Wish my work crew was the one in your mind, though...

Depends on what millean does for a living.  Maybe he organizes fashion shows for a living and works with supermodels.
