Ironically, I don't think Slave Leia was terribly huge until "Friends." Jennifer Aniston kicked it back from VHS obscurity into the now.

I joined this site just so I could comment on this article.  I happen to be friends with one of the Slave Leias you're condemning in this article, and setting aside the fact that you're using her likeness without her knowledge or consent, I think you're incredibly rude to insult her this way.  She is a classy, intellectual person who cosplays as many different characters, and she deserves better than the treatment you're giving her here.

I really don't think it's up to you to decide which characters are "over."

Laurakay...I think though you have to consider that the article isn't against the person you know but rather the costume itself.

And I would assume that if the picture is available on the web, the likeliness isn't ''stollen'' since when one uploads pictures on the net, most often then not the rights of who is on the picture don't apply, it's the website that owns the rights which they can re-sell or exchange from one site to another.

And it's not up to the writter to decide anything but it's his job to comment on any subject they feel they would like to discuss without making any ''final'' decision on any subject discussed.

Just because that article is written doesn't mean tomorrow no one will ever wear the outfit...maybe it was Robert's plan all along to start an uproar and have MORE Slave Lea's all over Cons all around the world.

But seriously, it's ok to disagree but to take it too personal, you have to consider it's only an article, not a bible.

Isn't there better things to complain about regarding cons? Like bad hygiene comes to mind. I'd rather see a hundred slave Leias than have to smell the horrible body odor of one unwashed attendee. But, I feel, if one is to wear the outfit, one should look good in the outfit.

LauraKay, I have nothing against Victoria (slave leia to the left of the bald buy with the red head slave leia). I took that picture of her at Comic Con this year and she posed for it. I also have several others of her (recognized her by those eyes) from other cons as Catwoman and Zantanna. It's not a knock on anyone one person that does Slave Leia at Con. Go for it and check out my Last Tour to Endor article with tons of Slave Leias. As I said in the article, its tired. Go for something else, as in a different character. - Robert

6dra6on6, I prepare a con con survival guide every year and cover that topic.

themovielord, I am curious - how did you know I was talking about Victoria, and not the other girl?

themovielord 11/2/2011 2:46:45 PM

LauraKay, I have gotten a few facebook messages saying that I was attacking her. I didn't know her name until today. Actually the first time I saw her in costume it (Zantanna) was boring and uninspired. Imagine my surprise when i saw her three years later as Slave Leia and getting paid for it. Kudos to you Victoria.

When I attended DragonCon this past year, I saw one Slave Leia when I used to see dozens.  The costuming fad for this is now over.

I don't hate the costume nor the people wearing it... I'm just sick and tired of seeing it at every convention I go to.  I had a similar issue when, several years ago, I attended a costume contest where there were three different Rocky groups, back to back to back, singing Time Warp.  The next group was another Rocky group, but they did a different song.  After that, I tracked down all the groups and told them that this was ridiculous.  Do a different song, please, for the gods sake!  Coordinate, something, just don't follow the herd.

So, yea, ladies, please, while we love looking at you in these costumes, there are other costumes out there and characters that we would love to see.

I am really digging these Geek Life articles.  I've never been to a con (hoping to rectify that next year) so I can't really comment on this subject like some might can.  I can see how seeing the same costume on dozens of people can get old.  However, if any girl can get away with that costume then the last thing I am going to do is complain about it.  :)

That being said, the Slave Leia costume should never, ever EVER be worn in jest.  That goes to any girl who doesn't look the part, or any male.  You think you're funny, but you're not.

Finally, I don't see how anyone reading this article would think that Rob was attacking any of the girls pictured above (well, except possibly for Olivia Munn and Adrianne Curry).  Honestly, when I read it I thought he was using the picture in question as an example of the costume done right, as opposed to the one beside it of the dude as an example of the costume gone wrong.

Kudos though to LauraKay who stepped up to defend her friend without coming across like a jack@$$ as 90% of the rest of the population would have.  Don't get me wrong, I think you were mistaken in this instance, but at least you stood up for your friend.  Hope my friends would do the same for me.
