What They Say
Contains both DVD 1 and 2 of Genmukan in all of it glorious and sticky action in an art box that is nearly too hot to handle!

Satoru Kido is your below-average detective. One day, he recieves a letter with a ticket. The job is a simple lost item case involving a ruby ring. He accepts the case and sets off for the mansion where a young mistress, an old butler, a beautiful teacher, a lovely maid, and an ugly manservant all await his arrival. He then sets out to search for the missing ruby ring, but a bizarre spectacle of desire and shame awaits him.

The Review!
An expansive mansion on a solitary island is home to a mystery regarding a stolen precious piece of jewelry, but something more sinister is actually at work.

For our primary viewing session, we listened to this disc in its original language of Japanese. There's little beyond a basic stereo mixing here with the majority of the sound coming through the center channel. Dialogue is nice and clear and the music and ambient effects make decent use of the left/right channels. There's little here to really do much more than a basic track anyway.

Originally released in 2003, Genmukan has a very good looking transfer that only in a few areas really felt like it was a digital production. This has more of a feel of a traditional piece but with the benefits otherwise. The two episodes feature very little in the way of cross coloration of aliasing which puts it pretty far ahead. Add in the very high bit rate used combined with some very pleasing colors on the eye and a generally good looking solid piece of animation and this comes across very well. There's little flaw to really find in this print though it doesn't stand out as strong as some of the more overt digital productions.

Released in two keepcases inside a simple cardboard box, each volume features a shot of a pair of the women from the episodes in very flimsy or loose clothing, giving a very sultry and sexy look without the overt use of skin and obvious porn moments. The box set itself uses the obvious porn shot with the teacher and student together pretty much completely naked and close together. The back covers show off some animation shots from each show and have a good summary of each episode. Features and technical information is nicely listed as well. As with all NuTech releases to date, there is no insert included.

The main menu for each volume is a simple static shot along the left of Ayano in her full dress outfit while clips from the show play next to her under the title and above the selections for the disc. The selections themselves are no different than the rest of NuTech's releases so getting around is nice and easy and menus load quickly.

The main anime related extra is the inclusion of a video photo gallery showing various pieces of artwork from the show. This is the same on each of the two discs.

Genmukan is a pretty simple tale that starts with something of a plot that gets shoved aside pretty quickly in favor of some sex action. And since a lot of it is girl on girl action, you know the audience they're playing to doesn't mind a shift in direction.

The story centers around a detective named Satoru Kido. He's not the best detective around and he's in a rut now with lots of bills to pay and a secretary who is demanding her bonus. Since she doesn't believe sex with the boss counts as a bonus, she's getting kind of upset about it. Mind you, she says this while having sex with the boss. So when Kido gets a call for a case out on a remote island, things happen quickly enough that Kido gets himself out there to handle this new business.

The island is fairly remote and there's just the single mansion on it. Nobody else goes there nor has any reason to, so there's a fair bit of mystery to it over the years but the locals are otherwise downplayed into nothing pretty quickly. Kido's arrival on the island is both welcome and unwelcome, depending on the party you're dealing with. The butler/caretaker, an older gentleman who called Kido is, is pleased to see him and explains the missing pendant and its jewel to him as well as its importance. Kido figures it has to be something of an inside job due to the mansions location and other factors, but otherwise he pretty much settles right into detective mode. But there's something strange about this place as every here and there he gets a feeling of something going on and it's sexual in nature.

In the mansion itself, there's a few people there that basically live to serve its mistress, the young Ayano. Her father had died not long before and she's been growing up there on her own under the care of others. She's got herself a teacher that helps with her studies, a maid to do most of the chores and something of a groundsman to deal with everything else. Add in the butler and you get a nice little crowd of potential thieves. So Kido starts investigating each one of them to find out what they may know or be up to and of course there's plenty of sex and innuendo along the way. These scenes for the most part do not disappoint and there's some good training of the girls going on. One three-way all girl scene is rather good for the most part but has one of the most blatantly bad obvious repeated segments that it's just awfully poorly done.

Genmukan is nicely complete in the two episodes that are here as there's a twist surprise ending that isn't too terribly surprising but it fits within the context of the show and characters. Genmukan isn't a terribly exciting one but it plays out well and has some good sex scenes and isn't over the top in its naughtiness, giving it something of a good couples type show. With some very nice looking character designs, nicely erotic sex scenes and overall solid looking animation, this is one of those shows that a lot of people end up with and enjoy but just don't have much to really say about it.
