George Lucas talks "Indiana Jones 4"

By: Karl Schneider
Date: Thursday, April 05, 2007

In a recent interview with USA Today, George Lucas talked about the upcoming film, Indiana Jones 4.

The cliff notes: First trailer coming Thanksgiving, official title yet to be announced, still trying to get Sean Connery to sign on, wasn't Lucas's idea to cast Cate Blanchett - Spielberg wanted her.

USA Today writes:

Jokes have been made about how the franchise will keep 64-year-old star Harrison Ford up and running, but Lucas doesn't see that as a problem.

"He's not running in any of the movies," Lucas says. "He's either on a horse or driving a car or a motorcycle. And he'll play his age in this movie with what's appropriate. The chases are more suspenseful than speedy. Like the rolling ball in the first film — it's not that he's running that fast, it's that there's a giant ball coming at him. And he will get beat up, which is a tradition for us."

Lucas, who also is in pre-production on a "bare-bones, action-heavy" Star Wars live-action TV series, says there'll still be plenty of action in "Indy 4," the official title of which he hopes to keep under wraps until the first trailer hits theaters around Thanksgiving.

Sean Connery has yet to sign on as Indiana's father, Dr. Henry Jones, but Lucas says, "We're still trying."

It wasn't his idea to cast Cate Blanchett as Ford's new leading lady, he says. "That's who my director wanted, and I always bow to the wishes of my director," Lucas says of Spielberg. "I approved it because she seemed like a good idea. When I met her at the Academy Awards, I told her, 'Hey, you work for me now!' "

Let me be the first to say that this man should do something other than rehash his biggest hits. Remember, he did do American Grafitti and THX1138

"Remember, he did do American Grafitti and THX1138 "

And Howard the Duck...

gggaack!

All kidding aside, Lucas changed filmmaking with his THEN innovative style. Summer blockbusters are now a staple of our cinematic diet due to him (and Spielberg). But he took that Joseph Campbell mythos too far and became insulated and removed to what was good writing/directing over the years. Still though I will be the first to plunk down and watch the SW TV series...

Hey, I liked Howard the Duck. Well... we find it entertaining anyway. But I like this report about Indy 4. Looking good.

And on the note of Star Wars bits, I finally finished a draft of an animation I started a while back... the link is also in my profile. Enjoy!

Excellent work, browbeat. Good Lip-syncing, editing, action, sound...well executed. I'm surprised you didn't go 3D for the ships. If you play with the render settings, you could get a nice cell-shaded look. But you're probably like me-- don't know how to composite 3D + 2D + backgrounds + effects. Thumbs up!

browbeat...just watched your animation...that was great! How long did it take you to put that together?

As for Indy IV...So far I'm liking everything that I've read about the project. It would be nice to see Connery in the film, but if he's not I don't think it will hurt the project in the least. I don't think Indy running is the issue; it's all of the abuse his body has taken in the films. I like that Lucas said Indy'll play his age in the film, because there's no way a 64 year old could take the kind of punishment he did in the first three films. There's always a level of suspension of disbelief in the Indy movies, but that only goes so far. I'd love to see a "be careful you don't break your hip" joke somewhere in the film.

Nice show, browbeat!
Prediction: Connery won't be in this.
I'm worried that this will take place in the fifties, which will make the cliffhanger style look ridiculous. I do hope I'm wrong.

What will they do if Connery declines? If they're trying to get him, his character must already be in the script. Do they have an alternate script, just in case?

You guys have to remember what Connery said about the offer to do a cameo as Bond's father. "I am taking a break from filming as kind of a retirement, but if the price is right I'll come back to the franchise but only in two or three scenes." I'm sure this case is the same for Indy IV.
I'd go see this with or without Connery as well. I'm a big fan of the adventure comedy that this franchise delivered in the past instead of mindless action and explosions.

That was bloody impressive Browbeat, captures the original Star Wars atmosphere beautifully; based on what I just saw I think I'd enjoy a full series of your Star Wars animation more than I enjoyed Clone Wars.

And I liked Clone Wars.

Loved it Browbeat. My daughter says she wants more.

As for Indy, Can't Wait. As for SW TV, can't wait.
