Gerard Butler joins "Watchmen"?

According to Zack Snyder in an interview with Sci Fi Wire, Gerard Butler may sign on to star in the upcoming adaptation of the graphic novel, Watchmen.

"He may" play a part, Snyder said.  Which one Sci Fi asked, "I don't know yet, but he's fun, so I'm sure we can figure something out for him."

Snyder also said that he had approached Tom Cruise about starring as Ozymandias, but Cruise passed on the idea after mulling it over.

In the film, superheroes have been outlawed with the only ones still in operation under direct control of the government. Suddenly, those heroes both still in action and retired find themselves targets by an unseen enemy, who wants to kill them one by one.

KJ's Take:  Damn man.  Tom Cruise would have been absolutely brilliant in that role.  I love Gerard Butler too, so I have no qualms with him joining.  In any case, I am thrilled to see this movie climbing it's way out of development hell.

Snyder and Butler were at Wondercon yesterday (Saturday) and Snyder made it seem like he wasn't even locked in to direct this yet. He said that there were alot of people who didn't want him doing this.

Jon, are you referring to the Wondercon in San Fran? (short for San Francisco for those don't know) That was an awesome event! I was there, too!...Yeah, I agree with Jon about alot of people who didn't want the guy doing the movie, either. Heck! I can remember waaaaaaaay back in 1989, I believe, when after all the Tim Burton's BATMAN hype and Hollywood's sudden "re"-interest in making comic book movies...Watchmen was slated to be a summer 1990 or 91' release for Warner Bros. And the studio wanted Kevin Costner as Ozymandias, along with Jamie Lee Curtis as that heroine chick, whose name I can't remember, and Monty Python's Terry Gilliam was set to direct the movie. Unfortunately, the script went through many rewrites, and the studio (at that time) thought the storyline was too "cerebral", or something like that. (More or less, the movie's budget would have been quite more expensive than Tim Burton's BATMAN, at the time) And, Kevin Costner had a prior commitment (directing and acting in Dances With Wolves), same with Jamie Lee Curtis' prior commitment to a couple of other movies. We'll see what happens this version of Watchmen being made...Excellent graphic novel, let's hope the movie will do justice.

This is another comic book/graphic novel that I almost wish they would just leave alone. The comic is so bizarre and multi-faceted that I don't think anybody could get it right, and I don't think any movie studio would want it done right. Are they really going to have it take place during the 80's in an alternate reality where Nixon is still president? I just think they should let it remain an awesome graphic novel instead of a possibly mutilated movie.

No, I believe he's referring to WonderCon that takes place in Oakland and not San Francisco. Where it has taken place for as long as I can remember it, having attended more times then I can remember.

Well, I started out very disapointed that they were going to try and adapt this great work...however, the more I read, the more I get excited about it. Plus, the visuals of 300 are so mind blowing I think they chose the right gent for the job. I've always been a fan of Butler (I was pulling for him or James Purefoy for James Bond.) I'd like to see him take on a big part in this project. Hey, it is rare that a director is not only a fan of the book, but seems to get it. Let me see...Spiderman and Sin City are about it so far, IMO.

I really liked Butler in Timeline, about the only good thing in that movie, but was very disappointed with his performance in Phantom. Looking forward to 300 and then I'll decide whether or not I'm excited to see him in this.

Tom Cruise would NOT have made a great Ozymandias.

Are you kidding me? First of all, he's, like, 5'3"...and he's definitely not a blonde.

Ugh.

Uhh, no, it is in San Francisco. At the Moscone Center by the Metreon. 5th and Mission. It was at the same place last year.

Maybe Tom didn't want to stir up more "homosexual" rumors. He did go blounde in the Vampire movie. There is only one emotion Tom can project on screen...angry. All his characters are angry. I think he needs to go with a comedy and poke a little fun at himself. Right now, he is just seen as a loon. Which is fine...move over and let a better actor take over some of his "high profile" projects.

My favorite Tom Cruise movie is the one where he played that cocky kid...(those of you who get this will probably get it later.)
