THE GETAWAY dashes to Screen Gems

The Hollywood Reporter claims that Sony Pictures wants to make a movie out of the PlayStation 2 action game THE GETAWAY. THR's sources say that the property would wind up in development at Screen Gems, Sony's independent film branch. No attached talent has been revealed as of yet; the project is most likely still in the early stages for any writers or development execs to have been assigned to it.

The idea is to release the movie in time to coincide with the release of THE GETAWAY 2 on the PS2. Ideally the film would move into production in the first part of 2004, giving the game developers 18-24 months to finish their sequel.

The first GETAWAY game is about a London criminal who plans to get even with a notorious mob boss. Along the way he shoots up pursuing police cars and other gangsters out to ice him while performing various nefarious missions.
