"Ghost Rider" not being screened

By: Karl Schneider

According to the New York Post, Sony will not be screening Ghost Rider early for critics in an attempt to avoid opening day negative reviews.

The practice of having limited or no pre-screenings for critics is slowly becoming a common practice for films expecting poor reviews.  The idea being that since reviews will only harm the films box office opening, it doesn't make economical sense to cater to critics.

Sony opens more movies 'cold' than any other major studio, and Ghost Rider will unofficially become the most expensive film ($120m) to ever take this approach.

KJ's Take:  Oh come on, you didn't see this coming?  I haven't seen anything to get me excited for this film and Sony is marketing the hell out of it.  Seems to be working as it's tracking for a $30 million opening weekend.  If I were them, I'd stick my middle finger up at critics too.

That's too bad. The advertising has been pretty awful, but the same could be said for a lot of movies. I've seen good movies that have had terrible trailers and TV spots, and I'm hoping that's the case with "Ghost Rider." Frankly, I think the majority of ads for movies only focus on the worst and stupidest aspects of the movie they're selling, often giving a poor impression of the actual film. I'll reserve final judgment for when I actually see the film, however I may not be seeing it if the reviews are negative, what there are of them. When I was fourteen, I'd probably have been pretty excited for a "Ghost Rider" movie, and in some ways I still am, or would be if I thought this movie would be any good. The thing is, the GR comics are something I look back on and wonder what I really saw in them in the first place. In all fairness, they weren't up there with the best of Marvel's stories, which is the nice way of putting it. The best time for a "Ghost Rider" movie would have probably been in the early to mid '90s (if not the '70s, when the original comic was published). Still, I'm hoping this will at least be fun, if nothing else. But with this news, not to mention the fact that Whedon lost "Wonder Woman" and Goyer lost "The Flash," it looks like we may be seeing fewer and fewer worthwhile comic book adaptations. I hope I'm wrong.

I am not surprised. Critics can be assholes unless they are watching little kids getting raped. Or gay men going to a horse brothel. The comic fans will be there for opening. What you did not like the Ghost Rider getting his taxes done?

"...Little kids getting raped or gay men going to a horse brothel."

Those are fairly limited genres.

By that logic, perhaps if Ghost Rider gay raped a child horse it would garner critical approval. It could be titled "Ghost Rider: Foal Throttle".

I for one am still young enough to appreciate Ghost Rider as a great Marvel comic and hopefully decent movie. My hopes aren't too high only because I really don`t want to be disappointed. I was really into GR when I collected. The Spirits of Vengence series was one of the best. I mean if you look back and question why you liked GR in the 1st place then you were obviously not a big fan of his to begin with.
Now, the director of GR also directed Daredevil which definitely not saying much, but from what I read he was a serious GR fan and maybe will put the same amount to love and excellence into it as Raimi did for Spidey. Not to say that it will be as good because it just won't. I mean GR doesn`t really have the best characters in it. It also doesn`t have that mainstream fan base that a Batman or Spidey does. In any event I`ll be there to watch whatever it turns into.

I was never a big GR fan, but I love seeing comic characters on the big screen and I like Cage as an actor, so I'm excited to see the movie. I really don't expect that this movie will do all that well, and I doubt it'll make its money back in its stateside release. The movie, when DVD sales are added will make a profit for the studio, but I think the response to this movie might make studios hesitate a little before greenlighting lesser-known hero movies. Will GR have the "penance stare" in the movie? I haven't seen that in the trailers?

The tactic of not making the movie available for critics has become a marketing tool in and of itself. Last year saw more releases of movies not available for critics than ever before, and it seems to have worked out for the studios - a lot of those movies opened strong before negative word of mouth killed business for most of them in subsequent weeks. With so much riding on opening weekend, it only makes sense.

Doesn't that also mean that critics will have to share in the opening weekend viewing, shelling out their 9 bucks to see the movie, thus increasing its profit? Being that critics will still have to see the movie to document their "take" on it?

I have a feeling Ghost Rider will be a film only appreciated by those who liked the Comics, which is not a bad thing, but being the Devil's Bounty Hunter is not your typical superhero, and at best, the concept might even stir up some religious grief and babble... It will definitely be visual if nothing else... Flaming skulls are always cool... and the effect of him changing into GR will probably be too graphic for younger viewers... with skin melting off his face and all that.

Take them off!!! The chains are burning, AAAAhhhhh!!!! ... no wait that is the acid stank of this odiferous pot of crap that is going to be released into moviedom.

How could three of my favorite things, choppers, comics, and chicks be turned into such a farce? We the movie going public are becoming jaded enough to know that no critic prescreen means ... total movie dung heep. Eventually this tactic is not going to work and it will immediately doom a movie.

However having said that if I spent $120 million on anything you bet your ass I would do what ever I could do to get that money back, i.e., over the top marketing, retention of mystery through the no screening process, etc. Of course they could have hired a really hot actress who has never done one to do a nude scene in the movie ... oh wait some one has already done that ... damn you Swordfish.

This smashes the high hopes I was holding out for this movie...I know I was in the minority here but I wanted this to be great and with this news you can't help but be discouraged now...So the question is, if this is how studios plan on putting out movies that are sub par without prescreenings will this in itself generate more nagative response than the actual prescreenings, it just shows that the studio is hiding a bad product with the hopes of suckering us into going and spending are hard earned money...What this makes me want to do is wait and see what other people say about it after it comes out and this realy hurts the studio because it is all about opening weekend and if opening weekend is poor that will usualy lead to a slow and unkindly death for a movie...

In response to some comments about the trailers...A trailer is like a book cover and thus cannot be judged by what little they have shown us, on some accounts yes but not on all...These ghost rider trailers have not shown me that it is going to be total crap...

snallygaster ...I don't know what your talking about. most movies have been open to critics this past year and subsequent years, it's only been a few that have not been open to them...name the movies you are talking about, because I can tell you that I have read articles on most of all the movies released last year that were high profile and they came from critics. It's not a marketing ploy, it's a, hiding the fact we have a bad product ploy because they know that everyone reads what the critics have to say about a movie..

godsonfilm...There are not enough critics in this world to increase a movies profit by that much...lol...the only reason a movie makes alot of money other than it being a well made movie, is multiple screenings...If everyone went and watched a movie once it would not make crap and lose money, point in case...I went and watched Titanic with my girl the third day it was out, the poor pathetic lady sitting next to us had started up a conversation wih my girl friend and it turns out she had watched the movie 8 times since it's release three days earlier, now I know this is an extreme case but people will go watch a movie two or three times if it is something they enjoy and studios are banking on this...
