Blu-ray fans have some big things to look forward to this year as AV Watch in Japan has detailed a couple of releases that are bound to attract a lot of attention.
With The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, this received a Blu-ray release on 07/25/2008 in Japan and Bandai Entertainment has stated that they will put it out in the US as well eventually. AV Watch has a really good article on the release and how it compares to the DVD release of it with a number of shots of both. The article talks about what the creators went through to provide as much detail as they did and there's also discussion about the differences between the high definition broadcast of the film and the Blu-ray release and how that final product is ultimately the one that wins out as the best way to view it outside of a theatrical viewing.
In regards to Ghost in the Shell 2.0, this feature which updates the CG is being done in a couple of versions. With the standard DVD version there is also a standalone release of the newly updated movie by itself on Blu-ray as well as a mini Blu-ray box set which will contain the original feature without the new updates. No standalone version of this is currently scheduled, but is apparently planned for later in the winter. The Ghost in the Shell 2.0 release is due on 12/19/2008 and will contain an upgraded Dolby TrueHD 6.1 audio mix in addition to the original stereo PCM mix that was found on the previous Blu-ray release.
