Ever since the development of Ghostbusters 3 was officially confirmed from Sony Pictures, rumors have been flying on what the story will be centered on and some of those reports conflicted with each other. From passing the baton on to a new round of ecto-plasma fighters to Sigourney Weaver and Bill Murray's son Oscar taking over the leadership of the Ghostbusters. Lead star Murray even contributed to the mass speculation by joking that he would die and be turned into a ghost before later casting doubt as to whether the third installment would ever be made.

In this latest update, returning director Ivan Reitman is asking for cooler heads to prevail among overexcited fans by telling Jenna Busch at ComingSoon that most of the previous rumors should not be counted as fact. While discussing his upcoming production No Strings Attached, here's what he had to say on the published reports regarding Ghostbusters 3.

CS: There have been a ton of stories online. Lots of back and forth...
Reitman: There is almost nothing that is accurate online about that film. Will you write that for me?

Ivan also says that the finished script has just been turned in and that lead star Bill Murray has yet to read it.

"We have a really good script, but Bill (Murray) has to read it. He hasn't read it. There has been all kinds of chatter online about him reading it and not liking it. He has not read a thing. He's never read anything. And I just sent it to him. So we'll see. God knows how long that will take. But we'll see."

Check out what he had to say about the Murray ghost/Weaver son rumors here.

I think Bill Murray has become  much like the characters he plays and probably is in no hurry to read the script. This is what happens to some when you reach that status I guess

This has been in development hell for far too long and it should've been made years ago. Having said that, if they have the right script with the right direction then they could have something big here. Hopefully, it will be better than GB2!

Last I heard, Bill decided that Ghostbusters 3 would be fun to do, since he had fun doing the video game. I'm glad the script is finished and I hope Bill doesn't take too long to read it... or like it, for that matter. :P

And I thought Ivan Reitman was fired from directing Ghostbusters 3? Just another rumor?

redvector 1/9/2011 11:13:51 AM

I think that if Reitman can't get everyone on the same page the studio will fire him and reboot the whole franchise from scratch.

If Reitman can't get everyone on the same page the studio will fire him and reboot the whole franchise from scratch, which might be a better idea.

I am down to watch it as long as all the original crew is involved.  Otherwise forget it.

I'm not sure what it would take for me to believe anything about this movie ever being made.  I don't want to wait all these years for another Phantom Menace or Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

This is awesome.... I think the idea of the original crew passing the torch to a new bunch of busters is an awesome idea... can't wait to here more.

If they do the whole "passing of the torch" thing in the new Ghost Busters then James Franco, Seth Rogen, and Steve Carrell have to be involved.  That or the guys from the Hangover.....  :D
