February 17, 2004... Filmmaker James Cameron and his production company, Lightstorm Entertainment, have snapped up the film rights to Charles Pellegrino's forthcoming book GHOSTS OF POMPEII. The non-fiction tome sets a portrait of the final days of the Roman township before it was buried under tonnes of ash when a volcanic eruption from nearby Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. The town was discovered almost perfectly preserved, showing historians how people lived (and died) nearly two thousand years ago.

Lightstorm will now begin finding a way to turn Pellegrino's book into a fictional storyline. Cameron may possibly direct the film but not until he's done working on his secret 3D science fiction film that many believe to be a live-action version of BATTLE ANGEL ALITA. Cameron's Lightstorm partners, Jon Landau and Raw Sanchini, will also help bring the POMPEII project to fruition.

Pellegrino is also the author of the science fiction disaster novel DUST, which has been in development for a number of years. [Variety.]
