GI Joe Retaliation Delayed

Fighting for Freedom in 2013

Just over a month before its original premiere date of June 29, Paramount Pictures has pushed G.I. Joe: Retaliation to March 29, 2013, in order to convert the film into 3-D, EW has confirmed. (Deadline first broke the story.)

Starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Bruce Willis, and Channing Tatum, the sequel just had a splashy showcase at the movie exhibitor confab CinemaCon, and posters for the film have been appearing in movie theaters for weeks (although the film is touted only as “Coming Soon,” with no release date listed). The decision to push the film was reportedly driven in part to shore up its foreign box office profile, since overseas audiences have remained more bullish on 3-D films than moviegoers in the U.S.

The move leaves some breathing room for Tatum’s Magic Mike, which is also set to open June 29, as well as allowing Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (opening June 22) more time with male-skewing audiences before The Amazing Spider-Man swings into multiplexes on July 3.

Universal has also announced that the Mark Wahlberg comedy Ted will jump from July 13 (i.e. the weekend between The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises) to G.I. Joe: Retaliation‘s old release date of June 29.

Eh guess I'll wait till March to see it, I think Battleship doing poorly and the fact that so many people did not like the first film (even though I did really like it) spooked them somewhat, plus the fact that Spiderman opened the week after and Batman two weeks after to steal their audience probably did not help things.

Truthfully it really sucks but the move makes some sense financially, I mean truthfully at best it was going to have a $60 million opening, and depending on WOM it would either develop a slight hold against Spiderman or loose a lot of its audience entirely.

I doubt Hasbro wanted two duds related to its properties this Summer, so they probably pressured Paramount to move it.

I think this is great move i thought the trailers for the movie looked awesome, but was disappointed at the same time that this wasn't gonna be in 3D as this movie would be amazing in it. I get tired of all the hate 3D gets if you don't like it that's fine nobody is forcing you to watch movies in 3D, you can always watch the movie in 2D or stay at home till it's released on home video wait for a good DVD quality download. And like other people have said this movie didn't stand a chance at all of doing well going up against the more highly anticipated movies like Men In Black 3, Promethus, The Amazing Spider-Man & The Dark Knight Rises, not to mention Battleship (which turned out to be much more of an epic failure at the box office than i thought it was gonna be) bombed badly at the box office going up against The Avengers which we all knew from the start didn't stand a chance against The Avengers but either way Battleship deserved it's fate. Battleship was nothing more than a weak unoriginal Transformers rip off that didn't even have the decency to go all out and be in 3D which it should have been, and if it wasn't gonna be in 3D the filmmakers should have at least made it a Das Boot, Crimson Tide, Hunt For Red October type movie which would have been much better than what we ended up getting if it had done any of those two things then maybe it wouldn't have bombed the way it did.

this sucks!

They are shelving it?  Not a good sign.  No reason for it to be 3D.

Studio probably thought they had a bomb on their hands.  Let's face it: The original wasn't very good but it was Shakespeare compared to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
