GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra- Meet the Joe's

GI Joe: Rise of Cobra Primer

By Chad Derdowski     August 06, 2009

G.I. Joe is the codename for America’s daring, highly trained special mission force. Its purpose: to defend human freedom against Cobra, a ruthless terrorist organization determined to rule the world.

With a history that dates back to 1964 and a movie on the way, Mania has been working hard to unearth top secret documents pertaining to members of both the G.I. Joe and Cobra organizations. Information is spotty at best, but we have been able to put together a brief dossier in order to better acquaint the viewer with the situation at hand.

G.I. Joe

Hawk
File Name: Abernathy, Clayton M.
Primary Military Specialty: Artillery
Secondary Military Specialty: Radar
SN: RA212754036
Birthplace: Denver, CO
Rank: Brigadier General
Played By: Dennis Quaid

General Hawk comes from a well established family and graduated at the top of his class from West Point, but the bulk of his training comes from experience on the battlefield. Hawk was the original field commander for the Joe team before a promotion and a gold star put him behind a desk, a promotion he accepted begrudgingly. But you don’t become the leader of G.I. Joe just because you’re a good tactician. He’s earned respect by being the type of leader that won’t ask his troops to do anything that he wouldn’t do himself: he’s out there getting shot at just like the rest of them.
Dennis Quaid has described Hawk as “a cross between Chuck Yeager and Sgt. Rock and maybe a naïve Hugh Hefner.”

G.I. Joe

Duke
File Name: Hauser, Conrad S.
Primary Military Specialty: Airborne Infantryman
Secondary Military Specialty: Artillery, small-arms armorer
SN: RA213757793
Birthplace: St. Louis, MO
Rank: E-8 (Master Sergeant)
Played By: Channing Tatum

The man known as Duke graduated top of his class from Fort Benning and has undergone rigorous Special Forces training. His high level of expertise allowed him to become a Special Forces instructor at four different schools. He also fluent in English, French, German and several Southest Asian dialects and has become well known as the current field commander of the G.I. Joe team.
Despite all of his accomplishments, Duke has repeatedly turned down promotions, believing that a commander’s place is with his troops, not behind the battle lines. This has earned him the utmost respect and dedication of those under his command. In a nutshell: consider Duke as Hawk ver. 2.0.

G.I. Joe

Ripcord
File Name: Weems, Wallace A.
Primary Military Specialty: Airborne Infantry
Secondary Military Specialty: Demolitions
SN: RA148231056
Birthplace: Columbus, OH
Rank: E-4
Played By: Marlon Wayans

Besides being blessed with what may very well be the greatest name ever given to a fictional character, Wallace A. Weems was also seemingly blessed with a lack of fear. He joined the Civil Air Patrol in high school and ended up joining the G.I. Joe team in order to jump from even higher altitudes. This is the guy who gets sent into an area that nobody else can get to. The idea is to send in a plane so high that it can’t be detected and let Ripcord drop for thousands of feet before deploying his chute at the last possible minute in order to avoid detection. The man’s got a lot of testicular fortitude.

G.I. Joe

Heavy Duty
File Name: Morris, Lamont A.
Primary Military Specialty: Laser Weapons Systems Operator
Secondary Military Specialty: Indirect Fire Infantryman
SN: 8070246LM65
Birthplace: Chicago, IL
Rank: E-5
Played by: Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje

He’s a classical guitarist in his spare time and sees little difference between playing Bach and hitting a distant, fast-moving target using heavy ordinance. Both require hand-eye coordination, right and left hand independence and multitasking abilities. To Heavy Duty, both represent his cultural refinement.
Above all others, the inclusion of Heavy Duty is likely to draw the most quizzical looks and possible scorn from longtime G.I. Joe fans. Not because there’s anything wrong with the character; he’s actually pretty cool. But when you ask a Joe fan to name a big black dude that carries a gigantic machine gun and is known as much for his refined tastes and gentle demeanor as he is for kicking ass, 10 times out of 10 you’re going to hear the name Roadblock. Heavy Duty just seems like a low-rent version of everyone’s favorite rhyming gourmet chef.
Why Heavy Duty was chosen over Roadblock (who, according to the G.I. Joe: Spy Troops series is Heavy Duty’s cousin) remains a mystery to fans, but it’s likely due to some sort of trademark issue, as a character is currently featured in the G.I. Joe comic books who looks and acts a lot like Roadblock but is referred to as Heavy Duty.   Or maybe they’re just saving Roadblock for the sequel?

G.I. Joe

Scarlett
File Name: O’Hara, Shana M.
Primary Military Specialty: Intelligence
Secondary Military Specialty: CLASSIFIED
SN: RA242967434
Birthplace: Atlanta, GA
Rank: E-5
Played By: Rachel Nichols

Scarlett is an original member of the Joe team and is considered the leading lady of the squad. She was trained in martial arts by her father and three brothers and received her first black belt at age nine. A former CIA agent, Scarlett’s weapon of choice is the crossbow, though she is adept with any number of death-dealing devices.
The G.I. Joe cartoon often depicted something of a love affair between Scarlett and Duke, but true Joe fans know that there was only room for one man in Scarlett’s heart and his name is… well, his name is classified, but his code name is Snake Eyes. The two met when Scarlett was training new recruits in hand-to-hand combat. She bested the rest of the team and recognized that Snake Eyes was a superior fighter though he allowed her to defeat him so she could safe face. Thus began a love affair that has survived through decades of intense combat and an accident that left Snake Eyes disfigured and mute.

G.I. Joe

Breaker
File Name: Kibbey, Alvin R.
Primary Military Specialty: Infantry
Secondary Military Specialty: Communications Technology
SN: RA757793518
Birthplace: Gatlinburg, TN
Rank: E-4
Played By: Saïd Taghmaoui

Breaker is known as not only being the communications expert, but also as the Joe’s all-around computer specialist. He’s resourceful, self-assured and is rarely seen without his trademark bubble gum.
Breaker was an original Joe and he’s generally been that guy in the background who got the job done but never hogged the spotlight. Always a bridesmaid, never a bride: that was Breaker. As such, there’s a lot of leeway that can and likely will be taken with the character. It’s not 1984 anymore and that which worked in comics and cartoons might not play out well on the silver screen; but by god, if Breaker doesn’t have a huge wad of bubble gum in his mouth throughout the duration of this movie, we will personally drive to Hollywood, find the person or persons responsible, and heads will roll!

G.I. Joe

Snake Eyes
File Name: CLASSIFIED
Primary Military Specialty: Infantry
Secondary Military Specialty: Hand-to-Hand Combat Instructor
SN: CLASSIFIED
Birthplace: CLASSIFIED
Rank: E-7
Played By: Ray Park

Snake Eyes is proficient in 12 different unarmed combat techniques and is highly proficient in the use of edged weapons. He has received extensive training in mountaineering, underwater demolitions, jungle, desert and arctic survival. He is a qualified expert in all NATO and Warsaw Pact small arms. Long story short, Snake Eyes is the guy who goes bump in the night. If you look up the word “bad ass” in the dictionary, you’d find a picture that is obscured by the word CLASSIFIED, but rest assured – it’s a picture of Snake Eyes.
He served in the same Long Range Recon Patrol as Storm Shadow and Stalker prior to joining the G.I. Joe team and after the death of his family, Snake Eyes joined his friend Tommy Arashikage as an apprentice in the family business. Of course, “arashikage” is Japanese for “storm shadow” and the family business’ main product was ninjas. After a falling out between the two, Snake Eyes joined the Joe team and Tommy, now known as Storm Shadow, hooked up with the opposition.

**********

That pretty much covers the G.I. Joe team. Friday, it is the Cobra's turn.

I'm sure that the rest of fanboy nation is going to rip this movie to shreds. But isn't Ripcord a white guy? I haven't seen anyone mention that at all. Wouldn't it have been better to just use Stalker or Alpine if they wanted to have an ethnicly diverse role? And what's up with Heavy-Duty? Can, I get a Roadblock up in this piece? I really hope this movie doesn't blow but my expectations are that it will just for the reason that part of the appeal of GIJoe for me was the diverse characters. These guys seem like Dawsons Creek and V.R Troops go on a blind date. So, heres to Government pulling the funding for this under-trained, carbon copy mission force.

How can this movie not suck?

unconquered 8/6/2009 7:18:38 AM

Does it really matter what color Ripcord's skin is?  As long as he is crazy and jumps from anywhere, I'm good with it.

Wyldstaar 8/6/2009 7:30:56 AM

The movie can manage not to suck if most of the PR campaign has all been a ruse to get people with no interest in GI Joe to see the movie.  The true movie turns out to bear little resemblance to the trailers and other media used to advertise the film.

That's the only way this movie can manage to not suck.

I think I realized why they used Heavy Duty instead of Roadblock. I just dawned on me, seeing the above images....

Roadblock uses a distinct weapon (a modified Ma-Duece that he carries instead of vehicle-mounts). I guarantee, if they had him in the film with any other weapon, the fan backlash would have been exactly the same.

Heavy Duty uses a GE M134 minigun. For Hollywood's purposes, the minigun is much more desirable for screen-use. If I were still in the military, it's what I'd prefer for support, also (though they aren't really man-portable) The M134 fires about 4,000 rounds per minute, the M2 about 800. Which do you think looks cooler on screen?

So, you don't want Roadblock without the Ma-Duece, and you want to have a heavy machine gunner looking big and putting a lot of rounds downrange. You get Heavy Duty.

Muenster 8/6/2009 7:49:31 AM

How in the @&%# does a man child in his early twenties make Master Sergeant? I spent 1/3 of my life in the service and every three up and three down I ever knew had been in for damn near 20 years or even longer. Most of the Heavy and Specialized Combat Arms types at this rank have become pretty hard core or grizzled by then... And they don't pal around with E4's, they eat them.

Darkknight2280 8/6/2009 8:04:25 AM

Maybe he isnt going to be a master sgt in the movie..or maybe becasue they are in a "special Elite super group" they advance faster. I dunno, but you are right Muenster..no way in HELL a green mid 20's dude would be a master sgt.

mbeckham1 8/6/2009 8:46:03 AM

I agree with Muenster and Darkknight.  Apart from Heavy Duty being an incredibly stupid name, I mean every time I hear it I think of some guy taking a giant squat.  Honerstly, lets make a character just like Roadblock, but gicve him a cool new name, I know Giant Crap Man, That's much cooler than Roadblock.  Or wonderindg whaty reseach department came up with Ripcord as one of the top five Joes people most wanted to see in the movies, possibly the research department that discovered he was black.

My real question when I saw this was: Why the hell is Duke 12 years old?  Lookibng at the cartoon and the comic versions of this character, I always pictured him being played by Robert Redford about the age he was when he did The Last Castle, not a guy who grew his stubble so women would stop asking if he was above the age of consent.  I mean sdoesn't the biggest badass special forces team around deserve to be lead in the field by a guy who can order his own drinks.  Should we really be wondering not whether Scarlette will hook  up with Duke or Snake Eyes, but whether if she did hook up with Duke would she then be guilty of satutory rape.

What's really disturbing is didn't Duke in the animated movie have a son older than this guy in this movie.

You know there's something's deeply wrong in the universe when the guy who plays Harry Potter looks more like a season War Verterain than the guy playing Duke in GI Joe.

Kinda makes you wonder what Flint would look like in this universe, Fred Savage in the Wonder Years.

OmegaDean 8/6/2009 9:00:02 AM

I'm going to see this one at 12:01 EST.  I think this movie is gonna be fun.  I mean if you look at Transformers and go in with the same who gives a shit attitude you'll be happy as hell.  I did and love the Transformer Movies.  And besides that We get to see some sweet ass Darth Maul moments.... Ray Park and Byung-hun Lee kicking ass is gonna be awesome

WarCry 8/6/2009 9:35:04 AM

Just for clarification (and more arguments), Channing Tatum is 29 years old, not "12" or "early 20s".  They also made him an officer - a special ops team leader with the rank of O-3 (Captain) who got a battlefield promotion to O-4 (major).

And before anyone starts yelling about inaccuracies, the Marvel Comics "Order of Battle" lists him as "Master Sergeant (O-8)" which, as anyone with military knowledge knows, is a Major General. The OrBat also has Flint with the 'job desription' of Warrant Officer and the rank of E-5 (or E-6, I'd have to check).

So for everyone who wants to say the movie is disrepecting the source material....are you sure you them to use the old resources? Are you REALLY sure?
