G.I. JOE Topples Box Office

G.I. Joe scores $100.3 million worldwide.

With the summer rapidly fading into the twilight and with most schools set to begin their session in a few weeks, it’s time to discuss the last $150+ million/4,000+ print production of this explosive box office season.  Paramount Pictures’ decision not to screen G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra to professional critics across the nation (outside of a select few) was the talk of the online community last week and we all wondered whether that decision would end up hurting the film’s opening weekend performance. After looking at the early estimates, the short answer is no.
Studio estimates has Joe grabbing $56.2 million off 4,007 theaters here in the states, which come up to a respectable average of $14,025. While this opening could have been better, being the fourth-highest August opening of all-time, it could have also been much worse when you consider the bad buzz the first trailer created after the Super Bowl.
The adaptation of the Hasbro toy line also topped the oversea race by bringing in another $44.1 million from 5,750 screens in 35 territories. It was in 1st place in at least 13 of those foreign markets and when combined with its domestic tally, pulled in an estimated $100.3 million worldwide over the course of its first three days. Not bad but it needs a bit more time to overcome its $175 million price tag. We’ll see in a few weeks whether Paramount struck true box office gold and has another franchise on its hands for the foreseeable future.
In terms of biggest-opening August releases of all-time, Joe is fourth behind The Bourne Ultimatum ($69.2 mil), Rush Hour 2 ($67.4 mil) and Signs ($60.1 mil). None of those films had more than 3,700 prints in their debuts.
Sony Pictures enjoyed the 2nd place spot for this report with good word-of-mouth contributing a $20.1 million debut for Julie & Julia. The Meryl Streep vehicle, based on the life of cooking icon Julia Child, debuted on just 2,354 theaters so it came in with the second-best average of $8,539 per showing. And when considering the film cost only $40 mil to produce, Sony executives are likely very pleased with the fine showing.
Walt Disney’s G-Force follows in 3rd by grabbing another $9.8 million in its third weekend of release. The latest numbers increases the film’s overall domestic gross to $86.1 million. The Bruckheimer production also has another $27.2 million in foreign sales to give it a worldwide cume of $113.3 million. No budget has been listed for the CG adventure.
Warner Bros. Pictures’ latest magical adventure, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, continues to pull in some steady domestic numbers, this weekend with another $8.8 million. Over the course of its first four weekends, the film’s gross has overtaken “Prisoner of Azkaban” ($249.5 mil) and “Chamber of Secrets” ($261.9 mil) on its way to $273.8 million.
We do have to wonder whether it has the longevity to reach the $300 million mark and if not, can it survive long enough to overpass “Goblet of Fire” ($290.0 mil) or “Order of the Phoenix” ($292.0 mil)? If the sixth film stays somewhere in the middle of the box office chart for the next two reports it has a shot. “Prince” has another $493.0 million from its international receipts to combine for a worldwide gross of $766.8 million.
Universal Pictures found Funny People dropping from 1st place to 5th (and 65%) in its second weekend of release, with the Seth Rogen-Adam Sandler team effort finding $7.8 million at theaters. Even if it’s not going to come close to Apatow’s previous box office successes, it’s not all bad for the studio. They kept the budget to $75 million and their current tally is $40.4 million domestically. It has a good chance of breaking even before exiting theaters.
There was one other new release this weekend, another one for Universal Pictures. The studio launched their thriller, A Perfect Getaway, into 2,159 theaters this weekend and the film found the 7th place spot by taking in $5.7 million. The budget for this production was only $14 mil so the lower-tier debut is negligible.

We’re approaching the end of the summer season and here are the winners (and the losers) from best worldwide performance to worst. With the latest international numbers, it looks as if Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is about to overcome the second installment of Transformers for the reigning champion of the summer (and likely of 2009). Another weekend and it will be 1st place…
We’re also going to begin weeding out the losers at the bottom of this list over the next two weeks by taking it down to the Top 15 or Top 10.

A movie that wasnt all that much fun (cept for snakes eyes) is tops at the box office. I wasnt surprised it passed my $48 million estimate. I predict a 70% drop in money on gijoe next weekend. Word of mouth is going to destroy it along with District 9. I had high hopes for JOE, but those hopes were crushed by poor directing, horrible writting and ABOVE all horrible acting! Snake Eyes/Ray Park was its only saving grace in my mind and I want my $9 back!

Darkknight2280 8/9/2009 12:35:28 PM

Hanso..you were right from the beginning SON!

Hobbs 8/9/2009 12:36:02 PM

That's the problem when trying to decide if it was a failure or not.  Wasn't Watchmen a 55 mil opening weekend or something with comparable budget yet most will say that opening weekend was a failure.   I would be willing to guess the studio was predicting better but it will probably make a killing overseas, most high profile action movies do, so it'll make its money back.  I would watch for it to drop about 60% next weekend with District 9 coming out.

But lets talk about the most important thing.  Hanso! Son!  Did you have FUN watching GI Joe this weekend?

SONYMANswallows 8/9/2009 1:08:06 PM

A failure based on box office totals is not a failure. The writing could have been better but you go to GI Joe to see people in combat with insane williams. And come on most soldiers arent that bright anyway. GI Joe had much more success at being true to its history then Transvestites does.

raa2001 8/9/2009 1:16:24 PM

This is no surprise. I can go on and on about what they should've and could've done with this  movie, but a movie with the right marketing, at least half way decent effects, lots of action, and average to better than average acting will normally do very well at the box office.  It's a formula thats used like with most things.  Unfortunately, that formula doesn't always work well with us fanboys/girls.

Wiseguy 8/9/2009 1:17:26 PM

Early predictions had the film doing 45mil overseas. So they're looking at 100 worldwide and studio execs are quick to point out that they'll be getting a percentage on toy sales and they expect that to be substantial. I expect a big drop but District 9 is rated R so that may help Joe some

My sleeper pick opens next, District 9 should do great, it's already getting positive buzz almost across the board from all who have seen it. And the film amazingly only cost 30mil to make. It goes to show you once again that you don't need to always break the bank for great or decent f/x and cgi work. Of course it helps that there isn't any known actors involved too.

JarrodSarafin 8/9/2009 1:24:54 PM

The international numbers are updated in the report above. Joe pulled in $44.1 million on 5,500 screens overseas. Harry Potter moved to 2nd place in the foreign race but it's about to take down the 1st place spot for summer 2009. Check above.

ponyboy76 8/9/2009 1:37:42 PM

I caught G.I.J.O.E yesterday( yes Hanso, I saw it)  and despite all the things I said it was going to be I enjoyed it. The funny thing is, I don't really know why I enjoyed it. I guess it was a pretty FUN movie. My expectations going in were so low that it hit all of them so I didn't hate it I can also say that it was definitely better than Van Helsing, although in some parts they seem to have used the same F/X house. I do have quite a few issues with the movie which I'll address down below for people who haven't yet seen it.
Rachel Nichols and Sienna Miller were HOT HOT HOT!!

so spoilers---

spoilers---------

1) Isn't really an issue, I just would like to know who Brendan Fraser was playing. I thought it was Flint, but couldn't be sure. ????
2) In short "And knowing is half the battle"??? Are you effing kidding me? What the hell were they thinking, putting that in there? Yes, it was in the cartoon but only in the end and only as part of a PSA. It was never uttered in a situation during the show. What moron would say that? I can just picture them filming that scene:
Dennis Quaid: " And knowing is half, hahah, and knowing is half, hahaha, come really guys? I have to say this? (My casting agent is so fucking fired)
3) Destro's mask at the end looked horrible. It looked like silver Play Dough.
4) Cobra Commander's mask also sucked and the big reveal with him not being Dr Mindbender but Cobra Commander could have been handled alot better.
5) The CGI was good in small shots but pretty bad in the larger shots. I just don't understand why in an age where CGI has gotten so good with houses like Weta and ILM that they end up using some SCIFI channel F/X house.
6) Okay let me say being a black man that dates mostly outside his race and who's girlfriend is white, I am all for the interracial relationships on the big screen, but for the love of all that is good, holy and righteous, there is no way I can condone hot hot hot Scarlett and Ripcord. I`m sorry but she's Way out of his league. WTF?
7) Marlon Wayans. Too much with the HAHA. Sheesh.

Wiseguy 8/9/2009 2:12:19 PM

I guess now it's a matter of how strong Joe's legs are then. I hope it makes enough so the studio greenlights a sequel. But I suspect we won't know for sure til dvd sales and Christmas' toy sales are in

PONYO? I had to look that up. It's an anime from some famous Jap. director. No thanks

Time Travelers' Wife? Someone in the house is hinting at it so I may have to see it, to my chagrin. That's the price for dragging someone to see GI Joe :)

Anyone wanting to see Blomkamp's short film, the one District 9 is based on and partly why he was offered Halo here's the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZ1vHRs_EOs

pony, don't say FUN, hanso hates that. Just between us, shush

WarCry 8/9/2009 2:29:05 PM

Wiseguy, Ponyo is the newest release from Miyasaki, the guy who made Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, and nearly every decent anime with a wide US release. His movies show that "animated" doesn't have to mean "kids".

This was a better opening for GI Joe than nearly anyone predicted (as opposed to 'hoped for', which I'm sure it's lower than the studio's desire). I'll be interested to see what happens in the next few weeks, but I'm a member of the toy-collecting community, also. If they're getting a part of those dollars, too, then I'm near certain they'll be a sequel.
