Gil Kenan developing THE CITY OF EMBER

By: Karl Schneider
Date: Thursday, July 27, 2006

Gil Kenan (Monster House) talked to Sci Fi Wire about his upcoming project THE CITY OF EMBER.

THE CITY OF EMBER takes place in a future when Earth's surface has been ruined by toxic pollutants and humans live in cities under the surface. Two 12-year-olds, Doon Harrow and Lina Mayfleet, decide they are going to the surface when their only source of light underground begins to flicker out. No one has ever ventured beyond the safety of Ember, but the city's life supply is running out, and someone has to do something about it.

THE CITY OF EMBER is based on a book by Jeanne DuPrau and will be a live-action science fiction film.

"It's a post-apocalyptic children's film,," said Kenan. "It's going to be closely based on the novel."

Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman bought the rights years back and will serve as producers via their production company.

I don't know about you but there is something about "post-apocalyptic children's film" that doesn't sit right with me.

STOP TRYING TO CROSS POLAR OPPOSITE GENRES! It didn't work for M. Night Shymalan! Geez!!

Let me guess, they make it to the durface to find a lush, green landscape?

No, they make a run for it and reach Sanctuary, a lush tropical refuge. There they meet Al Gore, who is actually an immortal druid charged with protecting the earth's natural wonders.

How about an ending which nobody is expecting, the two kids climb to the surface to discover the world is still toxic and polluted. With no hope left, the two children return to Ember to inform them that they'll all eventually die.

spiderkeg... what would be a better ending is the children unknowingly bring something back with them (a contagious disease) which wipes everyone out.

i'm getting tired of all these children stories... are the adults in these universes totally tools or what? they've got to leave it up to the kids in order for them to survive!?!! Some scenarios work but in a post-apocalyptic world... puh-leeze!!!

That's it, jwesty! New Sci-Fi movie: "Tools of the Future." It's a post-apocalyptic tale where all the kids are smart, but by the time they hit 20, their brains implode and they become idiots! They'll probably make a TV series about it on Fox...

maybe they go to the surface and discover that it is really the matrix and they see the fields of human batteries

Don't say that or they will.
