In a surprisingly candid bit of opinionating, genre heavy hitting director Terry Gilliam (TIME BANDITS, 12 MONKEYS, BRAZIL) lashed out at the current music-video style school of event filmmaking, and took off particularly on last summer's 'hit' TOMB RAIDER.
"The guys who are shooting films now are technically brilliant," Gilliam conceded. "But there's no content in their films. I marvel at what I see and say: 'God, I wish I could have done a shot like that.' But the shots are secondary for my films, and with some of these films, it's all about the shots. I watched TOMB RAIDER last night. Technically, it's brilliant, but it's just crap! Every shot is beautifully composed, the lighting is great, the sets are great. But what's the point? I'm not sure people know what points to make. I'm not sure how in touch with reality anybody is, everybody's too busy phoning each other."
Gilliam is currently preparing GOOD OMENS, based on comic book god's Neil Gaiman's book. This, after spending years trying and unfortunately failing to bring DON QUIXOTE to the screen. OMENS is set to start shooting later this year.
