Gimmicks

By: Robert T. Trate
Date: Tuesday, October 30, 2007

This week (unofficially) kicks off the holiday shopping frenzy with the release of ‘Spider-Man 3’. I was checking the weekly flyers on Sunday to see what gimmicks the retail stores would be offering to entice you to buy ‘Spider-Man 3’ at their store. I have wanted to address the topic of “gimmicks” for a while and ‘Spider-Man 3’ seems to be the perfect movie to do this with. There are many people; fans, parents, and grandparents, who are going to buy ‘Spider-Man 3’ this week. Everyone from Best Buy to the local grocery store will be selling it. What will get you to buy it at their store? Best Buy has possibly the weakest gimmick by offering a Spidey mask and trick or treat bag (50 per store). Trans World Entertainment (Sam Goody, f.y.e, Saturday Matinee, and Suncoast) are offering three different action figures (one per DVD) with the purchase of ‘Spider-Man 3’ (black costume Spidey, Sandman, and Venom). That’s not as lame as the masks and bag but who doesn’t have a Spider-Man action figure already? Wal-Mart is offering a game bundle pack including the movie and the PS2 game. So no gimmick really. Circuit City, for the price, probably has the best gimmick out there where you get the ‘Spider-Man 3’ soundtrack with the film.   Let’s not forget Amazon, where if you buy ‘Spider-Man 3’: The two disc special edition and ‘Transformers’: The two disc special edition, you save some money on both titles.   Now, what I would like to ask you is: do these things really matter? Which one will you go out of your way to get and what was the best gimmick ever offered to buy a movie? For me, the original VHS release of ‘Star Wars’ box set (circa 1995) that came with a full movie sized glossy poster that featured Darth Vader, an X-Wing, and the Death Star was more than enough to separate me from my sixty dollars. The tag line on the poster was and still has a lot of meaning for me, “The original one last time”. It was, after all, the last time I ever bought the ‘Star Wars’ trilogy the way I originally saw them in the theater.

With this being the last week in October oodles of Horror movies are on sale. Many “Special Editions” that came out last year are now reasonably priced or have moved into the bulk discount bin.   The overpriced ‘Masters if Horror’ DVDs are on sale, almost dirt cheap, as well as the ‘After Dark Horror Fest’ collection. It’s a great time for horror fans who want to clean up on their favorite genre. Don’t miss out on all the sales.

Actually, Target's gimmick of giving us a third disc is the best. That is where I am buying mine.
