Actor Giovanni Ribisi has come on board James Cameron's latest high-budget tentpole release AVATAR 3-D, says Hollywood Reporter. The trade reports the actor will be joining Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Peter Mensah, Laz Alonso, Wes Studi and Stephen Lang in an epic story a band of humans pitted against a distant planet's indigenous inhabitants.

Director Cameron invented new virtual photorealistic production techniques to shoot alongside live-action photography. The film (with a budget of 190 million) will also feature six CG actors known as synthespians. Production has begun on the film in Los Angeles and next month moves to New Zealand where it will be filmed in Peter Jackson's Weta Digital Workshop.

AVATAR 3-D hits theaters everywhere May 22, 2009.

I like Ribisi. He is great at playing quirky characters. I think I will be more excited about this movie when I see some footage for it.

191 million dollars???? This has failure written all over it. Waterworld anyone?

You're wrong.

This movie is going to be HUGE.

I'll believe it when I see it.

CardinalSin,

There was another movie that James Cameron made that cost upwards of $200 million that everyone tagged as a flop waiting to happen, yet turned out to make massive amounts of cash. You may have heard of it. It's called Titanic.

I'm hoping by next summer we'll get a teaser for the movie. I can't wait to see what Cameron has up his sleeve now.

Yeah, because 3D movies are such surefire hits.
As for Titanic, it was saved by the hormones of teenage girls.

I pretty much agree with everything Whiskeymovie said. I like Ribisi for some reason, despite the fact that he is in a crazy cult. I also don't know enough about this movie to get excited about it yet. Isn't there a cartoon called Avatar? I thought that was what this news article referred to.

necroskippy,

Why do you say that 3-D is such a hard sell? Granted, it's a format that hasn't been used much outside amusement parks in the last 20 years, but I don't see any reason why Cameron can't make it work for Avatar.

And I worked for Blockbuster at the time that Titanic was released on video. I can tell you that its success was based off much more than just high school girls drooling over DiCaprio.

I can't believe this movie is finally getting made, but now that it is I'm not betting against Cameron. He's been working on this project a long time and I doubt we'll be disappointed when it finally comes out. The guy's a genius and I relly like how he's always pushing the technological envelopes of filmaking.

Who cares if this has flop written all over it?! it's not your money. If the movie is good I don't really care if it makes money or not.

And why is everything compared to Waterworld? The movie made $90 million dollars, how is that a flop?
