Updates:

September 26, 2006 - According to WENN, Russell Crowe has confirmed that he and director Ridley Scott will film a sequel to GLADIATOR. While the hard quotes don't quite back up that statement, they do suggest that Crowe and Scott are seriously considering the sequel.

"We talk about it every now and then," said Crowe. "We did kind of make it tricky for ourselves, considering we killed the character at the end of the first one. But that's not necessarily going to stop us."

"There have been stranger things happen out of Hollywood... There's a sort of 'What happens in the after-life?' question."

September 1, 2006 - According to WENN, Ridley Scott has confirmed that he plans to make a GLADIATOR sequel with Russell Crowe.

Scott had originally tried to get a follow-up made in 2003, before abandoning the idea, but things are now back on track.

"I will probably do a sequel to Gladiator," said Scott "The only problem is Russell Crowe was such a powerful presence and, of course, Maximus dies at the end. We'll have to get Russell back somehow."

December 9, 2002 - Screenwriter John Logan recently told CINESCAPE he's working with Ridley Scott on a new GLADIATOR project:

"It's in the story phase, you know, meeting with Ridley [Scott] and talking about what it should be and sort of flushing it out. It's early days, just trying to pick out a story. It does have something to do with the first one and I'm not calling it a sequel."

Logan refused to elaborate, invoking a paranoid fear of homicide: "I can't even tell you because it's all so top secret that if I said anything, Ridley would come running through this door and strangle me. It's going very well, it's going to be very exciting."
