God of War III Reviewed

Kratos' journey is at an end.

Kratos' journey is at an end. The climactic final chapter of the God of War series had finally reached its climax, bolstered by the power of the PlayStation 3 and given a fittingly epic endcap. Riding a Titan already as big as a small mountain up Mt. Olympus? Yep, that's just the start. Try fighting on that Titan while it's moving. Yep, Kratos does that.

He also hops on the backs of baddies, solves massive puzzles in the heart of the gods' domain and ends up finding, perhaps, just a shred of his humanity. But how does his quest for vengeance, bed-laying and carnage actually hold up on the PS3? Could Sony's most capable in-house development team have finally faltered after three directors in so many games?

Our friends over at TotalPlayStation have the reveal...

Why even bother with gaming on this site when you put absolutly no effort into it. An off site review for one of the biggest PS3 releases ever. Lame!!!

Agreed.  this might be the biggest release of the year.  Put a little effort in please.

Hardly the biggest release of the year, especially when Mass Effect 2, Bioshock 2, and Splinter Cell Conviction came out this year.  As a longtime fan I knew what to expect, and while it met my expectations it certainly didn't surpass them.  Good game, but other than a PS3 coat of paint it's the same old God of War experience, for better or worse.  No real evolution in terms of control or gameplay here, just prettier graphics and the same good story we've been privy to so far.  I wouldn't say I was disappointed, but I wasn't overwhelmed either.  That style of gameplay just doesn't cut it anymore.  Linear levels and button mashing are pretty passe and if it wasn't for God of War's production values and story, there wouldn't be much to differentiate it from every other hack and slash button masher.

Red Dead Redemption is the big winner for me so far this year, at least in terms of multiplatform fare.   Alan Wake is also fantastic, and has been lurking in the background of public consciousness almost as long as Kratos has been in existence.  People who only own PS3s are always going to narrow their perspective to the big system exclusive, but as an objective multiplatform owner, I can't  look at this series through the same rose coloured glasses as some folks.  There are plenty of games to watch this year.  Crackdown 2, Dead Rising 2,  Fallout New Vegas, Halo Reach, Alpha Protocol, etc.  Kratos is going to have plenty of competition once those game of the year awards roll around.

God of War is a great series, but it's time for an evolution in terms of Gameplay.  If Kratos visits consoles again (there's another PSP game in the works)  I hope that they expand the game world into a place players can explore at their leisure.  Ancient Greece, as it's depicted in the God of War series is begging for an open world action adventure game.  Throw in some RPG elements to change up the formula a bit.
