GODZILLA Legacy

By: BRIAN THOMAS
Date: Wednesday, January 25, 2006

The folks at Sony may have temporarily run out of new Godzilla films from Japan to deliver on US DVD, but they've still got a few new ideas for the world's greatest monster. Disappointment over the 1998 American version of GODZILLA has had time to dissipate somewhat, and the entertainment giant is hoping that viewers are ready to see the film with fresh eyes. On March 28, the old standard DVD will be replaced with a slightly upgraded "Monster Edition". The disc includes all the old features on the November 1998 DVD, along with the following new extras:

·"All-Time Best of Godzilla Fight Scenes" featurette
·Never-Before-Seen Production Art Gallery
·Three Episodes from Godzilla: The Series
·Photo Gallery: Godzilla Takes New York (before and after shots)

It's likely the fight scenes are compiled from only the Godzilla titles Sony has released on DVD a nice little bit of promotion. SRP for the disc is $19.98.

In addition to the GODZILLA THE SERIES episodes included on the "Monster Edition" will be two more volumes of episodes released separately. GODZILLA THE SERIES" MONSTER MAYHEM will include episodes 7, 10 and 11, while GODZILLA THE SERIES: MUTANT MADNESS includes 24, 32 and 34. Each volume lists at $9.98.

Meanwhile, deluxe edition DVDs of the restored 1954 GODZILLA have reportedly been released in the UK and Australia. A region 1 version has yet to be announced.

It would have been a true homage if Roland and Devlin kept the original Japanese name: gojira. Now, that everyone has no problem with enunciating Zarathura. Oh, well. The 'reimagining' is a another notch in a long list of letdowns.

It would have been hard to make this movie any worse.

It's right up there with the worst big budget movies of all time. Batman & Robin, Wild Wild West, Day After Tomorrow, this.

They could have put giant nipples on Godzilla.

The only way this film could redeem itself is by making a sequel with the baby that survived at the end is captured by the military and is genetically altered by scientist and eventually looks like the G-man we know and love. (With all his abilities I might add) As an adversary, he could fight his father who now is a cyborg from another military experiment (IE Mecha Godzilla). Throw in King Ghidorah somehow and you got yourself a kicka$$ movie.

I'm Backing zillagawd's Idea 110%!!!!

That scenario cropped up in the animated series, which concerned Godzilla's more mutated and friendly son working with a team of human monster fighters. An episode had the parent re-animated as a cyborg.

BTW: The kanji that is Romanized as "Gojira" is pronounced "Godzilla" by the Japanese, which is why the US distributor altered the spelling. Just listen to the original dialogue sometime.

In regards to gamera23 posting, that was the only episode in the animated series that was watchable. LOL! Using part of that story line (Cyborg-zilla) would give the fans of the 98 movie ( are there any!?) something to relate too for the sequel. I hate movies where they forget what happen in the past and try to re-invent itself. (The only one that has work so far is Batman) Plus having our Zilla design we know and like, kick the living hell out of the Dino-zilla is worth the price of admission. ( The did this in “Final Wars” but the fight was way to short…like 20 seconds) Throw in a sci-fi twist (Ie. Man from future, brings with him Ghidorads, wants peace but has evil plan, unleashes King Ghidorah), and you have movie to please both fans alike. Listen up Hollywood! Or by the way, no Matthew Broderick.

Trivia: Did you know that in Matthew Broderick’s famous movie “Ferris Beuller’s Day Off”, in the scene where he is singing “Dunca Shane”, the movie theater in the back was showing “Godzilla 1985”. Freaky.

I thought the movie was all right. Not the greatest in the world, but certanly not the worst.

Sure not the worst, but what a let down. The story sucked bad. And I love Gazirra.

Any one ever hear the Bob and Tom skits about this movie. Classic.

never-before-seen Production Art Gallery and a Photo Gallery and three episodes from a cartoon series? Not a big enough hook to lure this fish. Roland and Emmerich's Godzilla wasnt all that bad, its just... well I'm sorry... but Ferris Bueller battles Jurassic Parkzilla at Madison Square Garden.

Why call it 'Godzilla', if it isnt? Plus, this movie had so many freakin trailers featuring scenes that werent in the movie... I'd like to see those original Godzilla trailers again with deleated scenes and outtakes and bloopers.
