Godzilla Returns!

By: Brian Thomas
Date: Tuesday, March 23, 2004

I recently reviewed MONSTURD, which ends with the little girl narrator declaring, "..and they made a movie of it for a hundred MILLION DOLLARS!!" Film budgets have skyrocketed out of control in the past few years. Where will it end?

I think the days of the megabudget will be over soon due to the Hew Cinema of HD video and digital f/x. The messiah of this movement is Robert Rodriguez, and he spreads his message through DVD. Check out the extras on the SPY KIDS 3-D and ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO discs to see how this guy is making Cameron epics on Corman budgets.

SPOTLIGHT OF THE WEEK

During his 50th anniversary year, the spotlight has to be on [IMG1R]Godzilla as often as possible:

(O)
GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA (Columbia TriStar) Toho introduces the third robot version of the world's biggest movie star in this entertaining 2002 feature in which Japanese government scientists use the bones of the original Godzilla killed in 1954 to create a cyborg warrior dedicated to defending mankind from the new Godzilla.

NEW RELEASES

(O)
AFRICA BLOOD & GUTS (Woodhaven) The US version of this sensational 1966 documentary from the makers of MONDO CANE is missing nearly an hour of footage, but still paints a shocking picture of the turmoil in Africa during the 1960s.
(O) BEETLE UNCENSORED (Image) Dwarf Lester Green picked up his nickname "Beetlejuice" due to his small cranium, which made people think of the shrunken head character in the Tim Burton movie. But his tendency to spout quips made him a hit on the Howard Stern show, and he's gone on to become something of a cult star. Here's 78 minutes of Beetlejuice cutting up.
(O) BLACK SISTER'S REVENGE (Xenon) 1976 action from director Jamaa Fanaka (aka EMMA MAE).
(O) BLOOD SISTERS (Razor Digital) Two coeds investigate a sorority, and find out it's a nest of vampires! Includes 3-D version.
(O) BLOODY TEASE (Razor Digital) Three guys investigate a strip club, and find out it's a nest of vampires! Includes 3-D version.
(O) CHASED BY DINOSAURS (BBC) The [IMG2L]creators of WALKING WITH DINOSAURS present tales of a zoologist sent on missions back in time, kind of like CROCODILE HUNTER with prehistoric critters! Includes three episodes.

(O) FEAR FILES 2-pack (Razor Digital)

(O) LOUIS JORDAN: Films & Soundies (MVD) If you like any kind of popular music, Jordan should be important to you. This collection of shorts, short features and soundies (the music videos of the 1930s, which were played in coin-operated machines in night clubs) features the King of Pre-Rock in action.
(O) MONDO CANE (Woodhaven) This 1962 Italian documentary collects footage (real and faked) of oddities from around the world and became a huge hit, defining what's come to be known as a "mondo movie".
(O) MONDO CANE 2 (Woodhaven) Enough was left over for a sequel.
(O) MONDO MAGIC (Woodhaven) Repellent sights abound in this 1975 mondo feature focusing on primitive beliefs in magic.

(O) OF THE DEAD (Woodhaven) Excellent mondo documentary shows how different cultures around the world treat their dead.
(O) THE OSTERMAN WEEKEND (Anchor Bay) Sam [IMG4L]Peckinpah tackles a psychological thriller based on a Robert Ludlum novel in which a newsman is convinced by government spooks that his weekend guests include a spy ring. Two-disc set includes commentrak, full length documentary, and Peckinpah's rough cut of the film.
(O) PARASITE (First Look) Scientists and the environmental terrorists holding them hostage on an abandoned oil rig have to join forces against a monster.
(O) PIGLET FILES: Case File No. 2 (BFS) British spy comedy TV series.
(O) RANSOM (Buena Vista) Mel Gibson plays a jillionaire who decides to turn the tables on the gang that kidnapped his son by instead offering the demanded ransom as a bounty on their heads, then goes after them himself in this crowd-pleasing 1996 suspense drama from Ron Howard. Special edition includes behind-the-scenes, director commentrak, interviews, featurettes, deleted scenes, etc.
(O) THE RICHARD PRYOR SHOW (Image) Pryor's controversial 1977 comedy/variety series lasted only a short time before a frightened NBC cancelled it. The regular cast included Sandra Bernhard, Tim Reid, Marsha Warfield, John Witherspoon and Robin Williams. This DVD set includes all four shows, a 37-minute Pryor monologue, the Pryor Roast special, outtakes, and an insert booklet that includes unfilmed scripts.
(O) THE RUNDOWN (Universal) [IMG5R]Breezy action entry starring The Rock as a bounty hunter trying to bring Seann William Scott back from the Amazon jungle, over objections from villain Christopher Walken. With dual commentraks, deleted scenes, featurettes and more in either widescreen or fullscreen.
(O) SCHOOL SPIRIT (New Concorde) In death, a high school student finds not spiritual enlightenment, but a way to sneak into the girls' locker room.
(O) THE SCREAMING DEAD (EI Cinema) Six people are terrorized in a haunted abandoned asylum (is there any other kind?) in the first real bid at serious horror from EI in a while. Includes Making-Of, interviews, premiere footage, documentary on EI star Misty Mundae, and more.
(O) THE SECRET RIVALS (Crash)
(O) THE SECRET RIVALS 2 (Crash) Hwang Jang Lee (as Silver Fox), Wong Tao and John Liu mix it up old school style in these kung fu favorites directed by Ng See-yuen (INVINCIBLE ARMOUR) with fight choreography by Yuen Biao and Corey Yuen. Both in widescreen transfers.
(O) THE SINGING DETECTIVE (Paramount) Remake of the British cult favorite in which a hospitalized writer gets lost in musical fantasies about being a film noir detective, with Robert Downey, Jr., Mel Gibson, Carla Gugino and Katie Holmes. Includes directorcommentrak.
(O) THE SKULLS 3 (Universal) Bet you didn't know there was one sequel to that conspiracy thriller, much less two.
(O) SLAVE TRADE IN THE WORLD TODAY (Woodhaven) Almost entirely phono mondo shockumentary about slavery circa 1964.
(O) SORCERESS 2: THE TEMPTRESS (New Concorde) Julie Strain gains control of men's souls by invading their dreams. So what else is new?
