GHIDORAH THE THREE-HEADED MONSTER
© Classic Media
You may have noticed that the usual Monday Anime Avalanche column didn’t appear yesterday. Mania decided that anime is overexposed on the site and unceremoniously cut it. I’ve been writing the column without a break since March of 2005, so I have mixed feelings about its cancellation. On the one hand, it’s nice to have free the eight hours or so I spent every week putting it together, and now I can spend it doing other things I enjoy. But it feels odd to let it go completely, so I’m incorporating anime releases once again into the DVD Shopping List. The coverage won’t be as complete as it’s been, but it’ll still be there.

Appropriately enough, in our Prize Closet this week we have two copies of FIRED! THE MOVIE, courtesy of Shout Factory. To be eligible to win one, just send an email to which includes your name and address to DVD Shopping List, and put the words “PINK SLIP” in the subject line.

But there’s more! Two winners will receive copies of both our spotlight items Ghidorah the Three-Headed Monster and Invasion of Astro Monster, courtesy of our friends at Classic Media. For this giveaway put “G-TWO” in the subject line.

NOT ON DVD CORNER
We welcome the input of Maniacs who want to share input on this section, where we highlight a different genre feature that has yet to come to digital disc format – just send your suggestions toDVD Shopping Listin an email identified with “NOT ON DVD” in the subject line.

(O)   FASTER PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL! (Warner Bros.?, Blue Underground? Fox? Image? Paramount?) Russ Meyer protected his entire filmography (except for the studio made Beyond the Valley of the Dolls) for decades, only releasing his films (including this, his best) on home video on his own terms and usually his own label. Now Russ is gone, but his films remain. So why can’t we see them? Overseas editions exist, but for high prices. And of course, you can order them all straight from RMFilms.com for $40 each, no extras except trailers. But what’s really required is a widely distributed deluxe edition, complete with a commentrak by surviving cast members and big photo gallery. I know Russ wanted tight control of his work, but there’s a way to have that and give the fans what they want. Until then, in my book this movie is still NOT ON DVD.

I am shocked a movie liked Norbit, a movie in which the previews weren't even funny, became a box office hit. Even "The Adventures of Pluto Nash" was a curiosity item in a was it really that bad? kind of way. Norbit looks simply unwatchable. Buy Trading Places and Coming to America and see Eddie Murphy at his foul mouthed best.

Eddie is at his best when he isn't being simply foul-mouthed. And he wasn't very dirty in Coming to America. Even Trading Places was pretty tame from that viewpoint.
