U.S. GOJIRA DVD

By: BRIAN THOMAS
Date: Sunday, March 12, 2006

Though the American version GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS has long been a staple on home video, there has always been speculation as to if and when the original 1954 Japanese version would become legally available in the USA. Speculation has heated up over a DVD release ever since Rialto Pictures release remastered prints of the original GOJIRA to theaters in 2004. Recently, the film was released on DVD in England and Australia, making U.S. fans even more impatient. On September 5, the wait will be over. Classic Media, the Sony-distributed independent that holds the current rights to KING OF THE MONSTERS and several other early Toho giant monster movies, have announced the release of a special 2-pack DVD of both the Japanese and American versions of the film.

Both films will be remastered in High Definition and maintain their original 1.33:1 aspect ratios. Several extra features are being considered for inclusion, such as the commentrak included on the British Film Institute release. Classic Media is also preparing a much bigger Japanese sci-fi box set. Fans are hoping this set will include both Japanese and American versions of all the Toho films in Classic Media's library: GODZILLA RAIDS AGAIN, GODZILLA VS. MOTHRA (1964), GHIDRAH THE THREE-HEADED MONSTER, MONSTER ZERO, GODZILLA'S REVENGE, RODAN and TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA. It's too early to speculate as yet, but CM has set up a special website at www.godzillaondvd.com to disseminate information.

Well, I'm glad it's finally happening, but we really shouldn't have had to wait over fifty years for a proper home video release. I hope Classic Media puts together a really nice DVD set. But seeing as how popular and well-recognized Godzilla (or Gojira) is in North America, why exactly did it take so long for someone to release the original Japanese version over here? Were there legal problems, or was it something else?

"Both films will be remastered in High Definition"

I'm curious as to how they will look. I recently did nothing more that upgrade the video cable from my DVD player to my TV using a composite cable(my TV isn't Hi Def -sigh- but it does have a higher than standard scan line rate), and older transfers (especially those featuring dark scenes) look far worse than they did with a standard video cable.

godzilla 1985???? Godzilla Vs Biollante? ARE YOU NUTS? THE ONLY GOOD GODZILLA films are the ones during Eiji Tsuburaya's reign. That stopped upon his death in 1970. All the new stuff is just made by fanboy filmmakers with a wet dream.

I've heard good things about the audio commentary on the British DVD; I hope they include it on this release. I REALLY hope they include some of the Japanese DVD extras; like the audio commentary by Kumi Mizuno on Monster Zero, or the footage of Godzilla at a theme park and shots of the construction of the monster suits from the Ghidrah the Three-Headed Monster DVD(which are on the Ghidrah Laserdisc that I have-it's great stuff). But that's probably WAY too much to hope for!
