Gokudou-kun Man-yuu-ki Vol. #2

What They Say

The Review!
I saw eps 1-2 on VHS tape, so needless to say, eps 3-6 looks and sounds much much better on DVD. This show is not to be taken seriously by any account, but it's fun to watch. There are some genuinely hysterical moments where I found myself rolling on the floor laughing. The story itself is kinda hard to summarize, because it's just so silly. Basically, the main "hero" (to use the term very loosely) is named Gokudou, and well, he basically gets into strange and wild (mis)adventures. Each adventure lasts a few episodes, and there is somewhat of a continuity.

Technically, it's excellent. No complaints from me. Animation quality is pretty good (I don't know if this was an OAV or TV series), and the voice actors do a very good job of supporting the wackiness of the characters. Video looks great, audio sounds fine, and I didn't notice any outstanding compression artifacts. Very enjoyable disc overall. There's a menu that shows the episode/chapter jump points and a few character sketch screens to gaze through, but not much else in the way of extras.

The bottomline: So is this a good buy? Hard to say, except that if the screenshots look interesting to you, then that's pretty much what you'll get with this disc. If you shut off your brain and go along with the sillyness, it can be a pretty funny show, and the DVD is an A-grade transfer.
