Golden Boy Vol. #1

By Morgan Law     May 31, 2002
Release Date: April 23, 2002

The Review!
This is series about love. About determination. About life. About SEX! With only few elements of the first three, this story centralizes sex and everything to do with it. With Kintaro Oe, this series shows the aspects of the men's mind about women, in hilarious forms! From rubbing toilets to trying on bras, this series covers it all! Presented with beautiful animation, Golden Boy is a sure hit for many men out there!

::[ Audio ]::

As a pure Japanese subbed watcher, I can honestly say I really enjoy the dub on the same level as the subbed. This is one of the best dubs I have heard. Doug Smith sounds out Kintaro's goofy sounds and perverted exclamations perfectly and is hilarious! Standard stereo for both Japanese and English tracks, with no glitches at all. Solid performance.

::[ Video ]::

Being an OAV created in 1995, the animation level is pretty high. The animation is full of color which makes this viewing even more enjoyable. A small amount of grain with the video, but nothing too hindering. The optional pop-up subtitles are mainly used for Kintaro's notebook, which is on by default. A great transfer here!

::[ Packaging ]::

The cover has the two girls from episode 2, Naoko and friend, tangling Kintaro as a puppet. I feel ADV could have had a better title than 'Treasure Hunt' and used better artwork for the cover. Something like the second volume coverart would have been nice, with the three main broads of each episode featured. The back provides a good description of what to expect on the disc, episode listing and some screen caps from the episodes. The one mistake was listing ADV Previews as an extras, as I could not find any previews. The insert provides a funny shot of one of Kintaro's wandering imagination with madam president. Overall, I would have liked to see the packaging done better as it was only average.

::[ Menus ]::

The main menu is the layout of Kintaro's notebook with the opening music playing. The menus are fast and smooth transitions. The extras section has panties as a side dish. Colorful, creative and well done!

::[ Extras ]::

Included is a clean opening and closing. The clean opening is interested as we get a clear view of Kintaro's bike, while the clean closing has nothing but a blank screen with music. The U.S. trailers are fine touch, and the image gallery rocks! Many fan service shots here!

Since watching this whole series on dubbed VHS, this has become my favourite comedy series. When the DVDs were announced, they were on my must-buy list right away! And when April 23 finally hit and I received it, I stopped my world and inserted the disc for my first viewing of Golden Boy on DVD.

Episode 1 (Computer Lesson) introduces a young man with his bicycle, who travels around Japan seeking knowledge about life. While listening to his cassette player and bicycling, he gets into a minor accident with a Ferrari. Out comes the blonde from the car, memorizing Kintaro with body. Being in a rush, the blonde leaves Kintaro money compensation to fix his bike and pain suffering. Continuing his trip after getting his bike fixed, Kintaro enters a business office where his new job will be. A strange coincidence, the president of the company is none other than the blonde in the Ferrari! After being caught doing some 'extra curricular' work while scrubbing toilets, he is put to the test with his programming skills. After failing the test, he begs to stay, and is given a second chance! After filling his head with knowledge from the workers of the company, he does the stupidest thing. The president eventually kicks him out, but he gets back at them. =) So this ends !
s first journey ends in lots of laughs and sets up for another great episode.

Episode 2 (Temptation of the Maiden) begins with Kintaro in another town. This time, it is election time, and Kintaro is working for a political party of a wealthy businessman. While in the boss' house, he eyes his daughter, young and innocent, Naoko. After volunteering to clean up the boss' house, Kintaro ensues in another imagination around the toilet. Caught red-handed by the daughter herself, he is lead to her room, where she obviously seduces him. Uncontrollably watching, Kintaro finally flees in politeness. As the seduction of the daughter continues, we learn Naoko is just playing around with Kintaro and using him as a plaything. After many events, the end result is Kintaro's swollen face and another lesson learnt by another. The sacrifices that Kintaro has made...

Episode 3 (Danger! The Virgin's First Love) has Kintaro in a family-run noodle shop, taking over for the kind owner since he was injured. The spotlight girl in this episode is the owner's daughter, who is targeted by a two-faced businessman who plans to marry her only for to divorce for her father's land on the restaurant. Kintaro discovers this plan and is determined to avoid that from happening. If it's from dressing in a horse costume, or hiding in trash cans, Kintaro is out there to save the day! Loads of laugh with romantic elements, this is my favourite episode on this disc!

My favourite anime quote: "Ah... I see, nothing to do with sex. Nothing! This is so educational! Hahaha... C is not sex."

Graduating from Tokyo University early, but already completed his necessary credits he has an iron solid determination about studying life, he keeps his new found knowledge in his precious little notebook. Golden Boy is a laugh not to be missed by any fan! And watch the dub, you sub-watchers, this dub will not disappoint! But when will Kintaro finally get the girl? Let's all wait and see on the second volume, as I relive the laughter.
