GOLDENEYE helmer back for Bond 21?

It appears that the producers of the James Bond film franchise are looking to their recent past for one of the key ingredients to shape the franchise's future. GOLDENEYE director Martin Campbell is in negotiations to direct the 21st 007 film for MGM, and if he can ink a deal with the studio and the films' producers, a big component of getting the next Bond film moving toward a 2006 release will have been achieved. Campbell is currently shooting THE LEGEND OF ZORRO for Columbia Pictures.
News of this first broke today in The Hollywood Reporter, along with a mention that the script for the new Bond movie supposedly contains story elements that are more similar to earlier 007 movies and not the latter films with their emphasis on big explosions and effects. But isn't that the direction that star Pierce Brosnan wanted to take the next Bond film, a move that producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli wanted to not head in? And if so, why is Brosnan now saying that the door is completely closed for him portraying the character for a fifth time?
