JONAH HEX, WONDER WOMAN, More! - Nov 10, 2008 - 06:33am
While I agree that Beyonce should not be Wonder Woman, I don't agree that Wonder Woman is white. Technically she'd be Greek or Mediterranean, despite the fact that she's drawn white. Jesus may be painted like he was Michelangelo's uncle, but that's not the way he looked. Technically I think the same logic should apply to Wonder Woman. I think a Latin, or Italian woman would pull this off better. Technically Linda Carter was hispanic & that would work better too.
My pick would be Monica Bellucci, but she might be too old by now.
WOLVERINE, HULK and BATMAN - newsbits for October 15th - Oct 16, 2008 - 01:19pm
It looks cool from the previews, but the trend of singling out Wolverine and making him the focus of the X-men always set wrong with me. Wolverine is a cool character, but so are the other X-men. By focusing so much on him in the movies and now the cartoon, just really diminishes the rest of the X-men in my opinion.
What if Warner made Justice League, Batman and the Justice League based on the success of the Batman films?
Plus that it's out of character for Wolverine to lead anything except himself.
That all said, I'm sure I'll watch & like it when it hits the states, but it still bothers me.
Zuda web strips headed for Cartoon Network? - Oct 14, 2008 - 08:02am
If they actually made a Bayou cartoon, that would be incredible. Bayou is one of the best stories I've read in a really long time. It's kind of a Southern American / Jim Crow take on the Wizard of Oz / Alice in Wonderland. It takes much of the folklore and myths of the this area and turns it on it's head in a really intelligent and interesting ways.
M. Night and Sam Hoping for UNBREAKABLE 2 - Sep 25, 2008 - 10:56am
I loved Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs. After that my enjoyment starts to go down. I liked The Village, except for the end, I really wanted a monster. Lady In the Water had potential but just got too silly. I hated The Happening. When I saw it there were scenes where the entire theater including myself burst into laughter at the absurdity of it. I just feel that if plants wanted to off people they'd have done it thousands of years ago if they could as opposed to now... Then again if I apply logic to Signs then it seems silly too, but I just liked Signs a lot better.
That all said, I would LOVE to see sequels to Unbreakable, but I wonder if they could ever happen since he's left his original studio, etc. Mr. Glass was a great villian to me. He'd been teased and picked on his entire life, so his detachment to the rest of humanity seemed believable to me. His motivations for his actions seemed better than many a comic book villian's motives in many of the movies I've seen in the past few years, so I'd be all for more Security vs. Mr. Glass.
DVD Shopping Bag: Great Pumpkin Issues - Sep 23, 2008 - 09:57am
I still enjoy "It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown", and "Merry Christmas Charlie Brown". I thought your analysis of the Great Pumpkin was interesting and entertaining, but it was a real stretch for me. The idea that in '66 the rocks Charlie Brown received were supposed be cocaine, is a bit much. I'm not even sure anyone thought to make cocaine into rock/crack form until the 70s/80s.
Lucy was a bitch with a capital B, but she was also a cartoon character for kids. There are a lot of characters that were asses. Oscar the Grouch, Jokey Smurf, the Grinch who stole Christmas, etc. No Lucy never truly gets her just desserts, however, sometimes life is like that.
As far as the WW I stuff, that was always my least favorite part of the special because it was so boring. I don't know how much it damaged kids because the fighting is imaginary, and you never see Snoopy's opponent, the Red Baron.
That all said, they did eventually make sequels or new specials that never quite lived up to the originals in my book. Also, I hope your column was in good humor, because if the Great Pumpkin really gets to you that much... well actually I can understand that because there are things (movies, shows, etc.) that get to me that much as well.
Max Makowski Directing VOLTRON? - Aug 29, 2008 - 09:52am
WhiteKnight, that would be correctamundo. They changed the plot from the original cartoons. YEAH HOLLYWOOD! To be fair, it's hard watching Voltron as an adult, partly because of the bad stories, partly because so much is probably lost in translation due to US importers trying to protect the youth of America from death and violence in children's television.
Iron Man Disses The DARK KNIGHT - Aug 18, 2008 - 05:55am
I liked Iron Man more than The Dark Knight. I think they were both great films, but Iron Man was just more fun to me. I think the one thing IM had over TDK was Robert Downey. He outperfomred Christian Bale hands down, IMHO. I'm sorry I don't think anyone had found the "right" actor to play both Batman and Bruce Wayne. The closest to perfect, for me, is Kevin Conroy as the voice in Batman TAS. Also, I'm still not a fan of the "gravelly voice" that Bale uses in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, he sounds silly. To be fair it is comparing apples to oranges though because they were different films.
That said what TDK had over IM was Heath Ledger as the Joker. That was THE best part of TDK. As far as best comic movie villians he might take the cake. I'd put him and Ian McKlellan as Magneto as the best. William Defoe and Alfred Molena get runners up as far as I'm concerned along with the guy that plays Deacon Frost in Blade.
Anyway, this is all just opinion. The only thing that isn't is box office. In that respect TDK won hands down.
GATCHAMAN Concept Art Online - Aug 05, 2008 - 11:53am
I was always under the impression tha G-Force took place in the 60s/70s and not a futuristic world because of the fashions of the show which were mullets and bellbottoms. I think it would actually be sweet if they were doing the movie CG just to keep that period aspect of the show as a stylistic choice, but I'm probably just weird that way.
New Videos for Blizzard's DIABLO III - Jun 30, 2008 - 07:47am
I agree with irascible, SC2 has been announced for about a year now. They should be close to beta at some point soon for that game. For Diablo, they only announced two classes. I only played the demo of Diablo 2, but weren't there like 5 or 6 classes for that game? If so it will take some time to get those classes set up, different from the other classes, and balanced for gameplay.
The other thing that's crazy is what they showed in the gameplay trailers looks like a polished ready to be published game. Blizzard is freakin' ridiculous.
Blizzard's STARCRAFT II Hitting Dec 3? - Jun 24, 2008 - 08:48am
*shrugging* Blizzard is notorious for putting games out when they are "ready." I've been a Blizzard fan since Warcraft II, so I take Dec. 3 with a grain of salt. Retailers also always give dates like this so they can get pre-orders. I'm as ready for this game to come out as the next Blizzard fan, but if you've been a Blizzard fan for any length of time, you learn patience.
Rob Corddry is PROJECT A - May 15, 2008 - 07:04am
"Ben Still and Stuart Cornfeld will produce." I'm guessing you meant Ben Stiller just because the sponsered links show Ben Stiller Movie?!? I only ask because there technically could be a Ben Still. Not trying to be the spelling/grammar police, but names are a little bit different.
IRON MAN - May 02, 2008 - 06:01am
Saw it last night & Iron Man definitely deserved an A if not an A+. Personally I didn't find the pacing uneven. I think from the jump if you were paying attention you could see the tension between Tony and Obidiah all the way from the opening montage about Obidiah running the company then Tony taking over.
I think everyone was cast perfectly. Wessmith as far as Terrance Howard having a pre-pubesant voice, I can kind of see what you're saying, but that guy has acting range you wouldn't believe. If you look at his body of work, that guy can more than make up for it.
Paltrow was great. Bridges was great.
Downey stole the show, however, in what I can't help but feel like is one of THE best performances of a comicbook character to date. Everything seemed to line up for the movie as far as the writing fitting the character and actor, the actor fitting the story, the direction being spot on. It was simply great.
One thing I was worried about was the trailers giving too much away and the best parts being shown, but the movie still shined and had much more depth to offer.
I really think I want to go back and see it again.
ALIENS VS. PREDATOR: REQUIEM - Apr 11, 2008 - 09:06am
I guess the the demystification didn't bother me so much because in Aliens and Alien it was implied that the company may have knew something about the "xenomorph" before Ripley's ship, the Nostromo, got the distress call in Alien. Both AvPs were in a sense just trying to lay down the ground work for the company "knowing" about the Aliens. In the first AvP it was the Waylan part of the company, and in the second AvP it was the Yutani part of the company. So by the time of Alien and Aliens Waylan-Yutani at some high corporate level probably knew about the xenomorphs and programmed Ash and Mother to obtain a specimen at all costs.
ALIENS VS. PREDATOR: REQUIEM - Apr 11, 2008 - 07:04am
I agree with TheSleeper, but I think I would give the movie (not the DVD) a D+/C- grade. I think part of the reason many people liked the movie was that they really tried to get back to some of the roots of both franchises. There were audio and visual cues from both the original Predator and Aliens that really pulled you into the movie if you knew what they were.
My issues with the movie was that I felt they were TRYING to be too over the top with the violence and gore. One thing I'd point out about the hybird, it couldn't create multiple aliens from any host; they had to be pregnant women. Hence the relevance of the hospital. I felt like they were trying to raise the bar as far as letting the audience know anyone could get it including kids, pregnant women, etc.
My other issue with the movie was thaty they tried too much to re-create Aliens and Predator. Many people have the complaint that Bryan Singer re-hased Superman the Movie in Superman Returns. I think if you were of that opinion, you'd probably be of the same opinion about this movie. The directors flat out said the reason there was only one predator was to make the movie more like the first Predator movie. While that makes sense as far as trying to evoke that feeling, it didn't make sense logically in the movie. The predalien hybrid took out multiple Predators on the ship, it wasn't just one. The similiarities to Aliens were obvious in that you had the strong veteran and her daughter who are like Ripley and Newt lite. They ripped of Predator to the point were there was even a "Get to da CHOPPER!" scene.
Personally I think the first Alien/Predator movie was better than this one, because it was closer to the comic book source which was a good premise. The problem is that first movie should have been set in the future and on an colony world (not Earth), but I digress.
This one was a fun popcorn movie, but other wise the story was a weak rehash of the superior orignal Predator and Aliens.
AMERICAN GANGSTER - Feb 18, 2008 - 06:38am
I haven't seen the commentaries, but in response to muchdrama and Hobbs, I have two things to say.
One, actors often have to form relationships with henious dispicable individuals if they are trying to understand a character they are playing. I don't imagine that Washington or Crowe are best buddies with Lucas now that the movie is over. Also, this might be akin to how investigators have to form friendships with deposed dictators to find out information about their former regimes... they had to do it with Saddam Hussein.
Two the Frank Lucas probably has really good people skills, and that probably helped him to get to where he was when he running his crime organization. My guess is that Lucas is probably a really charming guy, a lot of sociopaths are or can be when called for.
JUMPER - Feb 14, 2008 - 06:44am
...The Stomrider, I think the Brimstone reference would be regarding my favorite blue mutant "Ze Incredible Nightcrawler". I think Nightcrawler at least in the X-men Evolution incarnation ports through a hell like dimension between points a and b.
I thought he was cool before, but X2 kind of really put into perspective how powerful he could be if he chose to be so.
Destro Has been Cast?? - Jan 31, 2008 - 08:11am
I too agree Roadblock was WAYYY more iconic than Heavyduty... I don't even remember Heavyduty, can someone give some info on who he was?
Choco you are absolutely right, when I saw Jumpyguy I knew he had a future in Hollywood.
BTW and seriously, is anyone scared that this can turn into a Jean Claude Van Damme Street Fighter fiasco? I know I am.
Talking Torchwood - Jan 30, 2008 - 07:05am
I actually really like Torchwood and in many ways it's what I wish the X-Files could have become. The part I'm talking about in particular is if you are investigating these paranormal things and have access to alien technology, magic, what have you why not use it against the things your are trying to fight. The X-Files every freaking episode started off from square one... anyway.
I do agree with Taco in that you only have a fraction of the information if you don't watch Dr. Who. Basically, if you'd watch Who you'd know the end of the story for the good Captain Jack, but without it you are in fact left in the dark about a lot of things.
Finally as to your review, I think it was a bit harsh. I would watch this D episode, in your estimation of it, to any episode of Flash Gordon. I'd put the episode at about a C. Not the best, but not a failing grade either.
Edit: To Taco, if you can you might want to rent the first series and watch the whole thing, it gets better. I liked the first episode, but things don't really get into stride until about the third or fourth episode if my memory is serving me correctly.
NIGHTMARE Series Getting Remade.. - Jan 30, 2008 - 06:52am
One take in the Nightmare series or rather just outside of the Nightmare series that was great, IMHO was "Wes Kraven's New Nightmare." I wish they would have developed explored that a bit more because it turned the genre on it's head and made Freddy more of a bad ass instead of the one line dropper... I do admit though I'm one of the few *I'm guessing* that loves Freddy's one liners. Part of my childhood I guess.
WB Grabs a BUCKET of Cash - Jan 14, 2008 - 07:09am
This weekened I saw First Sunday & was really entertained. It was a decent movie with a moral behind it (don't rob churches... sheesh). Cube was cube, but the scene stealers in this movie would go first to Katt Williams and second to Tracey Morgan. I also saw the Great Debaters on Sunday & almost saw Orphanage by Guillermo Del Toro. I'm going to try my best to check out the Orphanage by the end of this week if possible.
Cube Wants a 'Hardcore' A-TEAM Movie - Jan 11, 2008 - 12:23pm
Can we keep the arguments objective, and directed toward the thought of the A-Team film and not directed toward posters and?
I think Cube would be cool as B.A. He doesn't have the physical build of Mr. T... Ving Rhames would probably be better in that department, but he has the right age.
I loved the A-Team growing up, but I'm not sure if they can really make this a compelling movie. Part of the fun of the A-Team was the 80's GIJoe aspect of bullets flying everywhere and no one dying. The appeal also stemmed from the A-Team being a precursor to MacGuyver as far as construction weapons out of tennis ball launchers, lawn mowers, blow torches, and whatever else was available.
ALIENS VS. PREDATOR: REQUIEM - Dec 27, 2007 - 08:54pm
I know I'm late... but I liked AvP-R... I actually liked AvP 1 as well, and I'm probably the one person who liked the first one better than the second one.
The first was as close to the themes in the Darkhorse original mini-series so far of the two. Basically a Predator training mission goes bad, a human teams up with a Predator and is marked as part of the Predaor clans.
While I liked the second one, it really seemed like a re-hash/mash of Aliens and Predator. The Aliens part was the bad arse chick in the National Guard lady (Ripley prototype I guess), town being over take (colony being overrun by xenomorphs), little kid to save (prototype Newt). The Predator part was that there was only one Predator like the original, he came down in a pod just like the original, and he was killed just like in the original... can a Predator ever make it through the movies?
I did really like the audio cues in AvP-R from both Aliens and Predator, but the plot wasn't that tight and basically the movie was just a slug fest between the two ETs with men caught in the middle.
I did actually like the ending because it actually tied up the story rather nicely IMHO. The first AvP had the original Waylan and the second AvP had an originator of the Japanese company (just can't think of the name right now). I'm guessing that basically Humanity gets to the stars, etc. based on the reverse engineering of the Predator plasma weapon. Sorry that seemed cool to the fanboy in me... Also in Alien and Aliens it was hinted that the company did have some inkling of what they were sending Ripley into, so the idea that Aliens had made it to earth doesn't seem that far fetched so long as all traces of them were destroyed and information on them was surpressed by the governments of the world.
That all said, I can understand if someone hates this movie, my wife was one. To put it into perspective thought she's not a fan of either franchise, so...
I wish they could make a third one just to actually get the concept of AvP from the comics down right, but I'm not holding my breath for that.
DARK KNIGHT Trailer Officially Hits the Web - Dec 18, 2007 - 09:18am
I can't remember who, but someone said about the Joker that part of the problem is there are so many variations of the character. There was a really good episode in the last season of Batman: TAS that kind of points to the different takes on Batman. there were three kids who find a batarang or something & they all have different takes on Batman. One kids version is the 60s BAM! POW! Batman, one kids version is more along the lines of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight, and I think the last kids was along the lines of how that Batman was in TAS.
That said, I guess there are tons of different takes on the Joker. I do disagree that the Joker isn't funny though. Sometimes the absurdity of what he does is hilarious. Mark Hamill's Joker from Batman:TAS was also pretty funny. On a sidenote, there was an interesting take on the whole Batman/Joker dynamic in Batman Beyond Return of the Joker. The Batman of the future breaks down the Joker in the respect that basically when it gets down to it the Joker is always trying to get Batman to laugh at his joke, but the Batman of old never had a sense of humor.
Also tying the new Joker into this stream of consiousness post, Ledger's Joker reminds me more of the "Jokers" from the Joker gangs in the future of Batman Beyond... they were joker-like but not quite the real thing.
Also, I'm not trying to knock anyones opinion, this is just my take. If Ledger's Joker seems right to you, great. If the movie does well, his take on the J-man will probably seep back into the comics and animated versions of the character anyway.
DARK KNIGHT Trailer Officially Hits the Web - Dec 17, 2007 - 09:36am
I thought the trailer was OK. It didn't knock my socks off or anything. Based on the trailer I'm not that excited to see the movie. That said, I will be seeing. I think I'm in part of the dessenters group as far as not digging Ledger's Joker. I don't really care for the look or the character so far. Hopefully the movie will make me a believer, but I'm not banking on it. To be honest my favorite Joker is Mark Hamill from Batman The Animated Series and all of the rest of the DC Animated Universe shows. Minus the being toned down for children, to date outside of the comics that is THE best Joker bar none for me.
STARDUST - Dec 17, 2007 - 09:06am
kempmike79, I totally agree with you as far as this being the best movie I saw this year. At least it was my favorite of the summer and it was too bad that it was so overlooked by mainstream audiences. I hope that word of mouth will help DVD sales.
The Top 10 Worst Genre Films of All Time - Dec 11, 2007 - 09:11am
I think I can come up with a better list than the one given in the article. Here's my list of 10 worst genre movies:
1. Leonard Part VI (mentioned by another maniac)
2. He-man and the Masters of the Universe (I can't believe no one mentioned this... It may be because it was so bad everyone forgot in order to mantain their sanity)
3. Star Trek V
4. Small Soldiers (Toys come to life)
5. Pluto Nash (mentioned by another maniac)
6. Johnny Mnemonic (I'll agree with you)
7. Doom (agreed again)
8. Street Fighter
9. Mortal Kombat 2 (The first one was actually good)
10. Starman
For the record, I actually liked Event Horizon. I think it's far from the worst genre movie of all time, and it does help reviewing something when you've seen the entire thing. Sleeping through 45 minutes of just about any movie would probably make it suck.
Blu-Ray or HD-DVD? - Dec 11, 2007 - 08:48am
I'll be a dissenter. DVD was chosen as a format long before Spielburg or Lucas decided to release either Star Wars or Indy on DVD. DVD's competetor was Divx... anyone actually remember Divx? You had to pay a monthly fee to be able to view the media you owned. DVD won because it was a better product.
Spielburg and Lucas decided to release their trilogies only after the format war had already been decided and after they felt the market had reached critical mass.
GHOSTBUSTERS Sequel Hits Consoles Next Year - Nov 15, 2007 - 07:28am
I agree about a CGI movie being a better route to go than a game. That said, though, I'll take what I can get. I always thought the holdup on a Ghostbusters sequel was Bill Murray just because he'd become big enough (Lost in Translation, and other indy movies) where it wasn't in his interest to do again as opposed to Aykroyd who I love but hasn'tseemed to have had the success that the others have had. Ramis always seems to have his finger in some project, Hudson has had various acting roles (Oz is the last one I can remember), and Potts has had other acting roles as well since Ghostbusters (Designing Women is the last one I can think of).
I hope the game does well.
Jack Nicholson Talks About Nolan's JOKER - Nov 08, 2007 - 08:39am
I like Nicholson's Joker... However, maybe I'm the only one who'll say this. The best Joker hands down to date in my opinion is Mark Hamill from Batman:TAS
HEROES: Fight or Flight - Oct 24, 2007 - 09:09am
This was my favorite episode of the season so far. It's funny because I think I'm the opposite of the reviewer. Last week was his favorite episode while this week was his least favorite, and I'm the exact opposite.
I felt like a lot happened this week and I really enjoyed it. I especially liked the parts with Nathan and Matt. I also really liked Monica's story. I did feel like the Peter parts of the story were filler though.
I think unlike most, I actually enjoy the other lesser characters stories. While Peter, Hiro, and Claire are my favorites, I also enjoy Matt, Nathan, and Nikki. Micah is alright. The twins and Monica are good. Sylar is good. Monhinder is aOK as well IMHO.
HELLGATE:LONDON Goes Live - Oct 19, 2007 - 08:44am
Hey, I'm actually playing in the beta & there were problems downloading that client and getting it to work. I had to cancel the first download, delete what was downloaded and re-download the program to get it downloaded completely.
After that, it wouldn't install correctly. To fix that problem instead of just running the program I used WinRaR to explore the setup download and run the installer that was actually inside the compressed package.
That said, I'm not sure if the new single player downloader will have the same issues.
As far as the game, it's pretty fun. The beta is online so it's a mix between Diablo, WoW from the MMO aspect, and a FPS depending on what class you play.
Urban Confirmed as Bones for STAR TREK - Oct 18, 2007 - 08:16am
To WISEGUY562's comments that after 2 (my favorite) the Startrek movies flopped... I think the most commercially successful Trek movie was actually 4 which didn't limit itself to just fans of the franchise. Also, I thought most if not all of the even numbered Treks were profitable at least so how can you say after 2 the sequels were flops?
Possible Cast Choices For JUSTICE LEAGUE - Oct 15, 2007 - 09:46am
I actually really like Metal's casting ideas... the only problem with getting older more established actors would be money which would break the bank. Willis and Gibson would require $20 mil a piece if not back end deals. I don't know the going rate for Belluci (who btw I would absolutely love as Wonder Woman) but she is an established actress and I'm guessing would go for between $10 mil and $$20 mil. Worse case senario that's $60 mil just for those three, the rest of the JLA hasn't been cast and then there's the special effects budget.
I just don't think we will ever get a dream team JLA cast because the cost for the actors alone would kill the deal more than likely. I would LOVE to be proved wrong however.
TYLER PERRY Shows Strength in Debut - Oct 15, 2007 - 09:30am
Jarrod, I only have one addendum (not trying to break your balls like some folk like to do over correct grammer etc. either). This is technically Tyler Perry's fourth movie. His first two movies opened at number one.
His movies would be in chronological order:
Diary of a Mad Black Woman 2/25/2005
$5,500,000 Production Budget from
the-numbers.com
$21,905,089 Opening Weekend from IMDB
Ranked # 1 Opening Weekend
$50,633,099 Total US Box Office from IMDB
Madea's Family Reunion 2/24/2006
$10,000,000 Production Budget from
the-numbers.com
$30,030,661 Opening Weekend from IMDB
Ranked #1 Opening Weekend
$63,257,940 Total US Box Office from IMDB
Daddy's Little Girls 2/14/2007
(could not find production budget)
$13,064,075 Opening Weekend from IMDB
Ranked #5 Opening Weekend
$36 from Mania.com
Why Did I Get Married 10/12/2007
(could not find production budget)
$21.5 from Mania.com
Ranked #1 Opening Weekend
I think Tyler Perry has done an amazing job so far, and will probably continue to do so. I think part of his success though is also when his movies open. Daddy's Little Girls probably didn't fare so well because it opened against Ghost Rider which had more hype and years of fans waiting for it. His other number one movies were up against weaker competiion though. Family reunion was pitted against Doogal and Running Scared. Diary opened against Cursed and Man of the House.
I'm not stating this to take away anything from Perry, I think what he's done is remarkable, and I wish him continued success as I enjoy his movies.
Tyrese Gibson For GREEN LANTERN in JLA? - Sep 28, 2007 - 08:23am
Warcry beat me to the punch, but Alan Scott was in fact the original GL. Look it up if you don't believe us (wikipedia or google). There are more than three Green Lanterns they are in fact a corps of galactic police so there are potentially hundreds.
Speaking on the article, I don't really like Tyrese's acting, but he might be able to pull off the soldier GL like the type written in the animated JL and JLU.
Apollo Chaos in INCREDIBLE HULK - Sep 20, 2007 - 12:59pm
ponyboy I understand what you're saying. I don't want to derail the discussion with racial or political bents... I'd rather enjoy the thoughts and geek happiness that any genre news of this type brings.
Sometimes people make off the cuff comments that I feel like should be checked though because people don't think about some of the things they say. Anyway, I'm through with that.
I'm really looking forward to this take on the Hulk and a more viseral opponent to fight against in the Abomination (vs. the Absorbing Man).
Apollo Chaos in INCREDIBLE HULK - Sep 20, 2007 - 09:07am
Sorry Whiskeymovie... if you paid anything at all to what's going on in America you'd know the Hulk would be sentenced to probation... however, if Luke Cage were to do the same crime he'd be chared with AND convicted with attempted 2nd degree murder... google or do a search on youtube for Jena 6 if you don't know what I'm talking about.
Apollo Chaos in INCREDIBLE HULK - Sep 20, 2007 - 09:06am

THOR #3 - Sep 18, 2007 - 09:35am
I don't think I can state it better than tiberius already stated. I loved this issue... in fact it was probably my favorite so far. I think every time Ironman gets his can kicked around it makes me a little bit happier. I think he's gotten his clock cleaned 2 and a half times now (Hulk, Thor, and Spider-man for a half).
Beyond wanting to see Ironman get his come-upance, I have loved the new Thor book. I liked Thor as a kid (now a 31 year old guy), and I used to love his battles with the Hulk, but Straczynski and co. have brought a new life to the character that is really refreshing.
Also kudos in my opinion to Straczynski for setting the story in New Orleans. I can't say I remember any comic even referencing Katrina and the devestation it caused which I think is ironic because it seemed to me that both DC and Marvel had 9/11 comic specials, but Katrina was probably more a much more devestating event in terms of death toll and the effect it had on a major metropolitan area. I think it was long overdue.
my 2 cents, with all the most sincere respect to those I disagree with in advance
Matthew Vaughn talks THOR - Sep 18, 2007 - 09:20am
Stardust was actually my favorite movie of the summer. I think the story was the tightest of all the summer movies (Neil Gaiman was probably key here), but the direction and acting were superb. I hope it shows in DVD sales. I went to see Stardust twice, and I'd like to go see it again.
That said, I'm looking forward to his take on Thor.
Rated R ALIENS VS. PREDATOR 2 Trailer - Aug 27, 2007 - 08:59am
OK just rewatched the trailer & the ship clearly crashes into Earth & the Aliens escape by accident. I'm cool with that. I guess now the only continuity issue is that if the military clearly has some experience w/ xenomorphs the space marines in Aliens should have came prepared a little better than they did... but I can get over it.
I am Much happier about the R-rating, but agree Fox is shooting themselves in the foot with a Christmas release... maybe they're banking on there not being anything like it to compete against it we'll see. I know I'll be there.
Rated R ALIENS VS. PREDATOR 2 Trailer - Aug 27, 2007 - 08:53am
I just saw the trailer on IGN (btw, the link in the document took me to a Heavenly Sword trailer).
The movie looks good to me... if anything it reminds me a lot of Aliens with Predator 2 sprinkled on top. The geek in me is bothered by a couple of things though.
1) Aliens should not be on Earth in that manner. Someone already mentioned it, but AvP's plot worked because the Aliens on earth were isolated in Antarctica. The Predators would not seed a innocent population with xenomorph eggs... I need to watch the trailer again though becuase if they crash landed I can buy this as an accident.
2) It's already been established that the Predators don't hurt civilians, but they seemed to be offing civies left and right in that trailer. If they pick up a weapon fine, but there was one woman who seemed to be just standing in the wrong place at the wrong time.
That all aside I'll probably love this movie. I actually liked AvP a lot as it was very similar to the original Aliens v. Predator comic mini-series by Darkhorse.
FREDDY VS JASON VS ASH Hitting Comics Soon - Aug 13, 2007 - 08:41am
Man, I was so disappointed when this fell through. I'm definitely adding this to my comic pulls and hope that strong sells bring talks back up for the movie.
DOCTOR STRANGE - Aug 13, 2007 - 08:30am
If I can segway from the argument... I'm really looking forward to the Dr. Strange DVD. I think Marvel's been getting better at this whole direct to DVD animation thing. I felt like the first Avengers was a little weak plot wise, but then Iron Man came out & it was a little better. The next Avengers was better still. I hope this trend continues. Storywise I still don't like them as much as the DCAU, but to be fair that's almost 10 years of anmiation from Batman to JLU versus three direct to DVD movies.
Ball Returns To HBO For BLOOD - Aug 10, 2007 - 11:46am
Ponyboy, while I agree that this premise does seem lame, I loved Six Feet Under. Based on that I'm willing to give the show a chance. Right now, there's really nothing on HBO I really dig. They cancelled my favorite show, Carnivale, a while ago. Six Feet was the last show I really cared about. The Soprano's just went on too long for me, but that's probably just me.
Fox Says Yes to VOLTRON - Aug 10, 2007 - 11:37am
I loved Voltron as a kid. I liked the lion version the best, vehicle voltron was ok, never saw gladiator volton but my cousin had some of the toys. Voltron was acutally an amalgamation of several japanese cartoons (like Robotech) which included Go-lion (5 lion), Diarugger XV, and Light Speed Electric God Albegas (which I never remember actually seeing up north).
That all said Vehicle Voltron was based on 3 vehicles Air, Earth, and Water. Those three vehicles in turn could break into smaller vehicles and all together I think there were 15 vehicles.
Also the pilot that got killed in the lion voltron was Sven, but he wasn't the leader. In the American version he didn't die, but left the team to help lead a revolt on some other planet. In the original japanese version he was killed.

More TOS Characters in STAR TREK XI? - Aug 06, 2007 - 08:48am
I was pretty sure that the original Sulu was hinted at being Japanese or at least of Japanese ancestry. I had a DC comics Star Trek comic back form the 80s that hinted at this. I know that's probably not canon, but who knows.

TRANSFORMERS Writers Speak Out - Jul 13, 2007 - 10:00am
gauleyboy420 you seem pretty hostile to critism of the Transformers Movie and immature in your repsones to the overall community on this board that disagrees with you. Actually in my case you seem pretty hostile toward someone who probably actually likes the movie. I never said Michael Bay screwed up anything. I liked the movie. In another posting I said I'd give the movie an A-.
I posted the following comments:
One thing I would question the writers about though was how the Transformers picked their forms. I think this is one area where as silly as some people seem to say the cartoon was, it beats the movie hands down. My reasoning is, in the cartoon the Autobots computer, Teletran-1, picked forms that most closely resemble the robots (Autobots and Decepticons) alien transforming forms.
In the movie this really wasn't explained though. They seemd to be able to pick forms at a whims notice (Freenzy and Bumblebee). Logically, if you had this ability, why on Earth (or Cybertron) would you pick a car form, when you could pick a plane or helicopter? It took the Autobots hours (presumablly) to get to the action at the Hoover Dam when most of the Decepticons were there in a manner of minutes. I'm know I'm probably just nit-picking but this just seemed like a weak element in the story to me that could have been explained away extremely easily (Autobots had land transportation forms primarily, or they got their forms only once from a computer rather than picking them up randomly).
Also what the heck did Scorpinok scan to become what he was. The robots can scan biological forms? If so why not the Dinobots, or an Elephant, or whatever else you can think of.
Your response:
NOW, whoever questioned scorpinox, you just read 100 million post about dinobots. Obviously tranformers can scan biological lifeforms. i.e. The aforementioned Dinobots, The Predacons, Insecticons and so on
I have a question, What will Soundwave be? Frenzy was kind of an amalgamation of Soundwave and all the tapes inside him.
AND I dont remember who posted it, but whoever was crying about howthe Transformers chose their shape and how Teletran 1 used the size and what resembled the cybertronian version of the transformer to choose the earth shape, explain how both Megatron and Soundwave grew to immense proportions when they transformed and sometimes at will. Megatron in gun form could be held by a human, other times he was wielded by a fellow decepticon. How can anyone bitch about the movie when the cartoon (uh I mean weekly commercial) had so many f'ing flaws like that.
Now my response:
I'm not sure you really comprehended what I wrote. You seem to be asserting that I said something pertaining to the size of various Transformers because you used the argument about Megatron and Soundwave from the cartoon and how that didn't make sense.
Here are my reasons why your argument doesn't hold up.
1. I clearly said in the cartoon Teletran-1 picked a form most closely representing the given Transformers ailen transformation mode. I said nothing about size. I felt this was a weak point in the story because if I as an alien robot could pick a form on the fly, I'd pick a military vehicle, preferably a fighter jet to a car or a truck.
2. In your perfect movie, like the cartoon with Megatron and Soundwave, they also didn't necessarily follow the laws of physics, with the Allspark in spectactular fashion. The Allspark was an immense cube structure that Bumblebee changed into a cube the size of which a human could hold. Conservation of mass anyone? Even if the Allspark was mostly hollow inside like a C-60 atom (Buckminster Fullerene google it if you don't know what it is), when it transformed into human size it should still have been to heavy for Sam to carry. BTW, I don't give a crap that it would be, I can suspend my disbelief in order to enjoy the movie. My point is that you bring up an argument about the cartoon like your infalible, but the movie was heaven sent. It suffers some of the same flaws as the cartoon I'm afraid.
3. You mention the cartoon was a commercial with flaws with disdain. That's funny a lot of people I've talked to say they didn't enjoy the movie because it just seemed like a big GM commercial. I'm not one of them, I don't really care that GM got some publicity out of it. Good for them, God knows they need it. My point here is your pointing out the twig in my eye when you have a tree growing out of yours... or rather you're in a case of the pot calling the kettle black.
You aslo seemed to attack me on the Scorponok thing. My only point there was that he really didn't fit in the movie given all of the other Transformers didn't seem to be biologically based. I'd be fine with him if they explained it. The whole Scorponok thing seemed more so like someone thought hey, it'd be cool if this giant robot scorpion chased soldiers around. I also was making the leap if Scorponok could be in the movie I don't see a problem with the dinobots.
My bottom line was I just wanted a little more explaination about certain things. It would have taken 30 seconds to explain why the autobot tended to be cars, and would have made the story just a little bit tighter is all. Also a minute to explain why scorponok was a biological form would have been nice.
That said, I really did like the movie for what it was a fun action filled adventure. I loved the scenes with Sam & Bumblebee before he knew he was an alien. The whole thing with Sam, the girl and Bumblebee trying to set Sam up with the girl through music was freakin' sweet to me. My only hopes by putting out constructive critism is that maybe come Transformers 2 they might put a little more thought into certain aspects of the story. I'm not trying to rain on anyones parade if they felt the movie was the second coming, I'm only trying to engage in thoughtful discussion of a movie I truely enjoyed and thought could have been even better with some minor tweaks.

I am a fan of the movie and the original series.

TRANSFORMERS - Jul 03, 2007 - 08:44pm
Just saw it. I'd give it an A-. I think I'd reserve A+ for movies like the first Matrix, The Empire Strikes Back, Spider-man 2, X-men 2, or either Kill Bill (just so you have an idea of movies I like). Blockbusters that I hated but others seem to love Independence Day, a lot of Michael Bay's movies actually (Armageddon, Bad Boys 2).
I think the movie had a decent plot for what it was. It wasn't totally ridiculous, and seemed to hold together. I do think that it was plot heavy and had many extraneous characters. Someone made a comment about getting rid of Anthony Anderson's character & the blond. I agree to a point, I think the blond figuring things out while all the "macho" guys dismissed her ideas were cool, Anderson kind of took away from that with his antics (I do like Anderson, but it just seemed like Comedy for Comedy's sake not to move the story along). Oh yeah with the exception of Tyrese, I guess all black men treat their mothers, grandmother, etc. like crap (please not this is sarcasm).
Someone made the comment that they went a little far with the jokes... I'd agree 100% with that statement. They were funny, but they got to be a bit much.
While the special effects were great, honestly I think I understand now why the 80's series had many characters in one or two primary colors. In the movie so many of them seemed to blend together it got confusing identifying them after a while. The easiest to identify would be Bumblebee and Prime probably because of the colors, while many of the more metalic one's seemed to blend together during the fights.
A Fantastic Feud: Your Letters - Jun 28, 2007 - 09:12am
Kurt, sorry I didn't comment last week, but your review of FF2 was spot on for me. I think you pretty much summed up exactly how I felt. Honestly I think the best Fantastic Four movie to date is "The Incredibles." I think the folks at Pixar got the essence of what an FF story was supposed to be about.
I also agree good call on Predator as Beowulf.
TRANSFORMERS Toon Comes Back - Jun 25, 2007 - 01:13pm
Here's a sample of what the animation is going to look like:

Why not just go ahead and re-make the Challenge of the Go-bots as opposed to ruining G1 Transformers.

Things Look GRIMM for New Regency - Jun 19, 2007 - 08:17am
Wheel of Time fan here... where I get my name from. Mirer03, like you I would love to see a Wheel of Time movie or mini series. I just don't think it'll ever happen. It's so dense. They *might* be able to pull off the first 3 or four books, but the budget would have to be epic to get into some of the latter stuff.
Imagi Sets Writer Kamen for GATCHAMAN - Jun 18, 2007 - 08:44am
Gatchaman was what the original Japanese series that G-Force and Battle of the Planets was made from. Kind of like Voltron is made from the Japanese Go-Lion and Dairugger XV or Robotech was the combination of the original Japanese shows The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber Mospeada.
Lionsgate Gives FRAKENHOOD Life - Jun 13, 2007 - 09:00am
See Captmathman... you've almost got it. It's not that you should have high hopes for this movie... rather, you should be high if you expect to enjoy it or that it make any sense.
I think they should create a new category of film called "Crack film". They can only be understood and/or enjoyed under the influence of illegal substances.
THUNDERCATS is Puurrfect for Warners - Jun 06, 2007 - 08:59am
I'll be a slight desenter here. I think most of the people here are probably correct in their prediction of this movie being crap.
I will say that I did like the cartoon a lot when I was a kid, and actually there is a little bit to work with as far as a back story. You have the whole angle of sole survivors of a destroyed planet (Superman) trying to make it on an alien planet (Lost in Space), you have the *magic* of a kid who magically turns into an adult (Big, Captain Marvel).
What will make or break this film, IMHO, is if you get people involved who actually liked the source material and can respect the source material, or who can see how to craft something greater from the original source material.
StarCraft II Unveiled - May 22, 2007 - 08:46am
smegforbrain, ok you don't give a rat's ass.
For those of you who do care about the facts, I looked up the game on Wikipedia. The game was Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans. It was the story of how Thrall, Warchief of the Horde rose to power. The genre of game was an Adventure game which at that point had been dipping in popularity due probably to first person shooters, console games, etc. Most of the elements of the game served as the part back story for Warcraft III, and the game was eventually fleshed out into a novel by the name of Warcraft: Lord of the Clans written by Star Trek novelist Christie Golden.
kaybar, I agree with you about Ghost being dropped due to the schism when Bill Roper & co left Blizzard. I think a lot of those guys were Diablo folk as well.
A Look at Ledger as the Joker - May 21, 2007 - 10:36am
I hate it... hope it's a joke (no pun intended... but you're welcome to take it if you want). It does look scary... it does look like a pyscho, but it doesn't look like the Joker. He looks like someone who's trying to impersonate the Joker maybe.
I think Nolan & gang can do better. At least I hope so.
StarCraft II Unveiled - May 21, 2007 - 10:17am
To smegforbrain, Merin already said it, I'll have to second SC2 will be released. Its a flagship game. There were Warcraft, Warcraft II, Warcraft III; Diablo, Diablo II; Starcraft. I think Blizzard has too much riding on it to not release this game. Starcraft in Korea is what the NFL/NBA/NHL/MLB is here. Not to mention the fans of the game around the world.
This has happened before, however, with Warcraft. Initially there was supposed to be a Warcraft game in the vein of King's Quest/Monkey Island (I can't remember what that genre was called). The game was going to be about Thrall's rise to become the Warcief of the Horde. Eventually the game got scrapped and those story elements were used as the some of the backstory for Warcraft III.
The other example would be Warcraft III. Initially the game was supposed to play much more like a Role Playing game, with how the Heroes played. I think Blizzard did the right thing & halted that development in it's tracks and went ahead and made the WCIII we all know & love. Those elements to make a more RPG Warcraft... well I'd bet dollars to donuts that development wasn't entirely wasted & may have been the foundation for World of Warcraft.
I think by the same token, Ghost will probably be the foundation for whatever MMORPG they develop for the Starcraft universe... but time will tell.
Also, irascible, Blizzard never released Ghost, so as far as I know Blizzard has yet to put out suckage.
"Puss in Boots" to get theatrical release - Nov 02, 2006 - 07:36am
Tried that this morning on another page (randomly) & I could read the text. Same for this page. I really miss the old site. I just came to it for news. Everything seems all cluttered now.
