Hello professor, would you like...

It looks like we will once again be reminded to be cautious if a computer asks "Would you like to play a game?"

Deadline reports that director Seth Gordon---no novice of games after helming King of Kong---has been set to lead MGM's remake of the 1983 film, WarGames. This modern update comes just five years after the studio revealed a straight-to-DVD sequel by way of WarGames: The Dead Code. Gordon's next film to hit theaters will be the New Line comedy Horrible Bosses.

Matthew Broderick starred in the original '83 film as a young computer genius who hacks into a government system and, thinking it all a game, accidentally initiates a computerized countdown to a nuclear weapons launch.

Hmm never saw the sequel...have to watch it somehow on the cheap.

I loved the music I bought the soundtrack for the first of course, but the song I wanted had stupid lyrics on it.  Anybody know how to remove singing on the track on a mp3?  The song is where he is trying to crack the password.

i remember this movie from years ago-lol i never thought a remake would be possible. I guess up next they will remake movies like Hackers- and Cloak and Dagger. SIGH- cant hollywood be origional anymore- Im honestly starting to think they are afraid to be.

LIked the original when I was a 12 - thought it was the spit back then. Actually I think a remake of this would be great, especially with advancements in computer tech/AI since then. So you can  count me in!

Deju Vu with The Hitcher. They made a cheesy direct-to-DVD sequel to a good film and then did an even crappier remake that used stuff from the cheesy sequel.

Forget that sequel and forget a remake.  Make a proper sequel with Matthew Broderick and Alley Sheedy.  And don't make it about their kids, make it about David sitting there in front of a computer: a burn out of the dotcom crazes, cuz that's a major plot point these days and he's just logged off from a 300 hour marathon session of WoW; while his woman is in the other room enertaining other men, hoping to get David's attention because he's paid her no mind in years and she ain't leaving him, because he "needs" her.  And well, he was smart enough to have a little money leftover.  Make her materialistic and self serving this time.

So he's sitting in front of his computer staring at a blank screen wondering how his life turned to utter crap.  He's childless, approaching 50 fast, his wife is cheating on him under his own roof and he's a failure; from one of the princes of the boom of the internet now reduced to living his life in a little electronci world.

When suddenly his computer kicks back on and he hears a familiar computerized voice talking to him and it says "Would you like to play a game...again?"

Have it directed by Uwe Boll.  Make Jason Statham the "other" man.  Secretly sent by the government to protect David from the machinations of the now evil "Joshua."  Who killed his "father" Dr. Falken and the rest of the people of NORAD who stopped his last attempt at playing his game. Because David and Jennifer are the last hope for humanity.....

I need another drink.

I'm with you aegrant, count me in. With all the advancements in computer and the sophistication of hackers and programmers alike I can see a remake being worth the time.

Loved the original, and the sequel wasn't actually as bad as I was expecting, and had a fair few nice little touches. This one could be interesting... Lets just hope they dont go the way all 'hacker' films went over the years and do that 'flashing-multicoloured-screen-reflecting-in-face' thing...

acidsquall73 6/24/2011 8:41:27 AM

Guys, it's "Shall we play a game?" Just needed to correct that :-p

The sequel was awful. I lost interest about 10 minutes into it, but still continued to watch it to the bitter end. I've seen worse, but this just wasn't good for me.

I don't know how a remake could work honestly. Part of the charm and allure of the original was that home PCs were up and coming and it was fascinating to watch him dial into other computers from his house. Then there's the voice of Joshua. That was awesome back then. I just can't imagine a remake being as good as the original in this case. With technology nowadays, it'll be difficult to put something on screen that we haven't already gotten with other movies that dabble in cyberspace. But I'll reserve total judgement for it until it comes out.

Now a movie on the assclowns that hacked Sony? I would see that. A couple guys go to hack into Sony to see the newest, coolest game coming out, but inadvertantly hack into the DoD. By doing so, they think they are playing a FPS called "Nuke-Em-All", when in reality they are actually ordering air and ground forces to blow Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan off the map. And then France for good measure. It'll go into the reason it took Sony so long to get back up and running was because the guys were having a marathon capture-the-flag session. Yada yada yada, they are stopped via rubber bullets to the head, the foreced to eat out of used baby diapers.

acidsquall73 - most of your last paragraph would actually make an interesting movie.  And could be the premise for a Wargames reboot.

Yet another remake we dont need.
