Scoop Feedback:
June 3, 2002... Director Sebastian Gutierrez has sold a pitch for a new horror film titled Gothika to Warner Bros. The movie will become another feature to be produced under the Dark Castle film company created by Joel Silver and Robert Zemeckis. Gutierrez will both write and direct Gothika.
As the script for the film is as yet unwritten, the only info we have about the premise comes from today's article in The Hollywood Reporter: Gothika is described as a ghost story about a female psychiatrist who mysteriously finds herself admitted as a patient in the mental hospital where she worked. January 10, 2003... The leads for this film have been found and they are Halle Berry and Penelope Cruz. Berry will play the psychiatrist who awakes to find herself an inmate in an insane asylum while Cruz will play another inmate. Production is scheduled to commence in March for a fall release. January 16, 2003... Dark Horizons reports that the project is in a "holding pattern" after director Sebastian Gutierrez was let go last week. [Dark Horizons.]
February 5, 2003... Looks like that Dark Horizons report was dead-on accurate, as the trade magazine Variety now states that Mathieu Kassovitz is the new director of Gothika. Columbia Pictures has also jumped on-board to co-finance the film with Warner Bros. Production is now scheduled to begin in April. [Source: Variety.]
February 14, 2003... Robert Downey Jr. is in talks to join the cast of Gothika, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Downey would play a friend of Halle Berry's character, a psychiatrist. Filming is still set to begin in April in Australia. [Source: The Hollywood Reporter.]
April 17, 2003... Charles S. Dutton, who played the religious leader of the jailed criminals in ALIEN 3, will star in the horror film GOTHIKA. Dutton has been cast in the picture as Halle Berry's character's husband.
Berry plays a psychologist who suddenly and without reason awakes to find herself locked inside a mental institution. A supernatural element is at work in the asylum and it wants to keep her inside for keeps. See what the consequences are when you take someone's parking space?
The picture has started shooting in Montreal and will be out in October. Penelope Cruz and Robert Downey Jr. co-star in the film. [Source: The Hollywood Reporter.]
May 16, 2003... Production on the Montreal set of the horror picture GOTHIKA has been halted for the remainder of the week after actress Halle Berry broke her right arm. The Oscar-winning actress broke her ulna, the long bone in her right arm, yesterday while shooting a scene which required her to be physical. Berry was treated at a nearby hospital and later released.
The movie still had four weeks of filming left in its schedule and right now it's still unknown how Berry's injury will impact the production. The Warner Bros. picture is currently slated for an October release. [First appeared in Variety.]
September 10, 2003... She's locked away in the same mental institution that she once worked at, except no one believes her story. That's the premise behind Warner Bros. upcoming horror film GOTHIKA starring Halle Berry, Penelope Cruz and Robert Downey Jr. Berry plays criminal psychologist Dr. Miranda Grey who awakens one day to find she is now an inmate at the asylum where she works at, accused of murdering her husband and with no memory of that night. Has Miranda lost her mind or is she the victim of another individual or force residing in the asylum? You'll have to wait until October 24 to find out, but for now we've got links to the GOTHIKA trailer to tide you over!

September 23, 2003... According to the JoBlo movie website, Warner Bros. has quietly scuttled its plans to release GOTHIKA, the Halle Berry horror shocker, this coming October. Instead the studio may be eyeing a November 21 release, nearly one full month after the picture's
original release date (October 24).
A number of scary movies are opening in the weeks before Halloween, which may be partially the reason why WB is supposedly shuffling its movie out of the way. HOUSE OF THE DEAD opens on October 10, followed by THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE on the 17th, followed by SCARY MOVIE 3 (OK, so it's a stretch) on the 24th. And let's not forget the director's cut of ALIEN which will now open on Wednesday October 29.
While studio's acting website for the film still lists an October release date, we contacted the studio to see if JoBlo's report was accurate. A representative for Warner Bros. did confirm that GOTHIKA has been moved to November and that a press release will be arriving shortly. [JoBlo, Warner Bros.]
September 26, 2003... Warner Bros. has launched the first phase of its website for the upcoming horror/psychological thriller GOTHIKA, now aimed for a November 21 opening. While the full website isn't quite online yet, what you can check out now are a couple dozen new photos from the show (including that photo we're running showing one stressed-out Halle Berry), four wallpaper images for your computer, AIM icons and a place to download and watch the film's trailer.
