GRAND THEFT AUTO: SAN ANDREAS, the bestselling videogame of 2004, will soon essentially disappear from store shelves. The game has been re-rated at "adults only," thus, most retailers will be removing it from their stores.

"Controversy over the content arose in the past month, when it was revealed that a downloadable patch known as 'hot coffee' allowed players to view a sex scene in the game," Variety and other sources reported.

Rockstar, the game's publisher, is working on a new version of SAN ANDREAS that will be available sometime between August and October.

Sex: bad

Gratuitous violence with depraved indifference: Just Dandy

I completely concur with the above statement, even though they've been looking for an excuse to recall GTA since the begining, they're just more tollerant of violence then they are sex. Even though a vast majority of the players of the game are adults, they seem to have a comic-book type stereotype in their minds were video games are soley "Kids' stuff" and therefore adults must pay the price. This is such crap.

Nowadays, you can download naked skins for most games, and sex 'em up. I dunno what's the big deal. But if USA now can't tolerate Janet Jackson's breast sticking out, they can censor pretty much anything with stupid repressive reasons.

I'm a supporter of Rockstar and their series of games, but I can't really stick up for them. They had this content buried deep within the game and they KNEW that some whiz kid would dig in and find it. I hate the opportunistic jerks in politics who believe they are saving the world and children by eliminating mature games, but all they are doing is getting their faces in papers to up their visibility.

I hate people who attack something that is very popular and yet very controversial because it's so easy to point fingers at Marilyn Manson-esque contenet and say "dow you wnat your kids to be witness to this?"

What politician would have the balls to say "no I like Marilyn Manson" They would be crucified and villified.

And lkknight, the deal is that Rockstar created this minigame, not some user. That's the difference.

So stores and cashiers are too lazy to check ID for age and now games are harder to get? I go into VIRGIN MEGA STORE in Chicago every week and I hear unedited 50 CENT or EMINEM or MARILYN MANSON and I dont mind it but there are little kids in the store. I mean cigarettes are behind the counter why not video games.

Oh and Im 30 and I dont want to see Janet's nasty plastic nips.

Right, Rockstar created it but it's locked, some guy created an unlock patch. If it was rated for Teens, parents should look after their sons and daughters about downloading that patch, just like they should do about them downloading pornography.

But, okey. Let's say it should get an Adults Only rating. So let's change the rating for The Sims too, since some guy created a patch to remove the blur in the sex scenes. The polygonal characters are still created to "do it" so it's Maxis fault, more or less the same case as in GTA . What do you think, that they're gonna change the "Kids" rating for the biggest selling game ever? nah, don't think so...

The stupid thing about the AO rating is that it means you have to be 18 instead of 17 to purchase the game. Obviously a lot of stores won't carry an AO game, which is why the AO rating makes a difference practically. In reality, however, an 18 year old is no more mature than a 17 year old.

Maybe if parents would do their jobs and monitor what their children purchase and if stores would enforce the M rating this wouldn't be a problem. But of course, it's never the parents fault. And you know what? I wouldn't mind if a politician lobbied for a law forcing retailers to actually enforce the video game ratings. That would be fine by me. But why go after the video game developers and try to prevent them from making their product in the first place? There is a much more constituitional solution to this problem that no politician seems interested in considering, and it's really getting annoying.

Okay I don't see how this is a reasonable arguement at all. First, you have to download a non-supported patch to unlock this with PC versions ONLY. If you want to get this mod to work for you for PS2 or XBox you have to MOD them...which is illegal.

So to get to the adult content you actually have to work at unlocking it. This to me makes it a concious decision to make the game racier. In any case I can see them pulling the PC version but not the PS2 or XBox versions.

I manage a major retail video game chain, and we are not pulling this game out of the store. The game will be placed behind the counter until next week when the AO ratings stickers arrive in stores next week to cover the M label. In the fall a revised version of the game minus the hot coffee content will be released. This hullabaloo is just fodder for the political machine. Gamers don't win, parents don't win, and the activists won't win for 1 major reason. Because of the ratings change I sold more copies of this game today then I have in the last month.....and yes my staff always IDs...no kiddie sales in my store without a parent. As far as I can tell, the winners here are retailers brave enough to continue carrying it, and Rockstar games, who once again are getting free press from the ESRB.
