Date: Wednesday, April 04, 2007

According to Variety, Paramount Pictures has hired comic author Grant Morrison to write the script for the upcoming adaptation of the video game, Area 51.

The game is set in the U.S. government's most top-secret military facility, with the storyline revolving around a hazardous materials specialist who is called in to investigate a viral outbreak that could be extra-terrestrial in nature.

An earlier draft was penned by Dean Georgaris, who will remain on as a producer for the film.

There is no Area 51 script, and we cannot comment further on this. All of you commenters can just leave contact information, and some nice men in black suits will visit you shortly to answer all your questions.

Good one Capt. Wasn't the original game a first person shooter in the arcade? And some virus turned people into zombies or alien slaves? Well, maybe not zombies, but a really zombie like irritation that runs at you and forces you to shoot them... I would be more interested in a serious version of MIB involving Area 51 and a conspiracy than just action... let's hope this is it.

Maybe....just maaaybe they'll get Uwe Boll to direct! That guy is sooo cool! We'll get a cool mix of in game shots right in with the action for comparison on how much the movie is like the game!

I liked the first person shooter game, but I can't see that carrying a 90 minute movie...unless Uwe is directing of course. Grant's a great writer, so I'm sure he'll deliver a script with a good story that involves more than just blowing up aliens. Still, it's a movie based on a game, and we all know that history doesn't bode well for this project.

I'll admit that I've never played this but can guess the content. I don't know why Hollywood hasn't tapped some of the more solid games like Half Life, Max Payne, Metroid, etc.. These games are totally immersive and are a "no brainer". Only Uwe Boll could screw them up or ... Paul W.S. Anderson, in most people's opinion. I dunno why Hollywood goes for these FPS games and then try to stick a story to the mayhem of a game that people play just for the sheer maniacal bloodshed. I mean how fun would doom 3 be if after a couple of minutes of raging alien death you had to stop and watch some cinematic clips to build a in-depth storyline. Blah! In this category I'd have to say that 'Doom' was a more acurrate adaptation because of it's weak story and numerous scenes of over-the-top deaths.

Games with brains is what makes for good films. To date there are not many worthy games-to-film adaptations. Tomb Raider and the FIRST Mortal Kombat are some what bearable. Anything by Uwe Boll is garbage.

If you want to see a good game to film watch Silent Hill. There is nothing currently out that compares to it.

One that gives me hope is The Prince Of Persia. I recently read it's being done by the good people at Disney and Bruckhiemer films. With the same crew as Pirates I think we're in for a good flick here.

Metroid is in fact a movie project right now albeit not moving very fast on the production train. There is no director attached nor is there a script, however It's being produced by John Woo.

With Grant Morrison writing it, you can probably bank on this. Mind you, the console game, which is what this is based on, is basically a first person horror movie with action elements. I wonder if they'll get David Duchovny to reprise his role. (I doubt it, but ....)
