Miramax Films has acquired the rights to THE GREEN HORNET after Universal cut their losses on a decade of development and let the project go.
Word has it that after Uni chose not to renew the rights to the property, Paramount, Sony and Miramax went for it quickly. Miramax is said to have grabbed the option and license rights for $3M. Universal is reported to have spent over $10M developing the property that never came to fruition.
Now, Miramax is getting more aggressive in seeing the Hornet reach the big screen. The developing property will be produced by George Trendle, son of the creator of the HORNET, and lawyer Harold Berkowitz. No creative talent is, as yet, attached.
THE GREEN HORNET tells the story of crusading newspaper publisher Britt Reid. During the day, he fights the good fight in the pages of his newspaper. At night, he takes on the disguise of the Green Hornet, teaming with his martial arts master house boy Kato. The world at large believes the pair to be criminals, which allows the crime fighting team to infiltrate the underworld walking among those that they seek to thwart.
