The Review!
Before I start the review I just want to bring to the attention of those who don't know GTO is an auto reference. If you care look up Ferrari and Pontiac in an encyclopedia and that should fill you in. Not that its necessary to know the reference to enjoy the show I just wanted to be a know it all. So let's begin the review shall we?

Upon receiving the DVD I had the chance to try it out on many different formats including a low-end player, a medium level player, and my DVD-ROM. I really don't want to waist too much time on technical issues but while playing the DVD on the lower end player the subtitles for the songs and signs did not show up on the English track when turned on. However, the Japanese track was fine. On all other players it worked fine so this is just a warning to dub fans with lower end players.

All right now the fun part. What's it about? Well... an ex-biker tries to become the greatest teacher in all of Japan. No really that is the basic premise. I know it sounds odd but it works, really. Anyhow Onizuka is quite an eccentric fellow at times and that in and of its self causes most of the show comedic moments. While trying to become a teacher Onizuka uses some odd teaching techniques including torturing his students and taking crying girls home, but in the end he does everything for the right reasons, mostly. I had one misconception before watching and that was the amount of fan service. It was far less than I though (with exception of the first episode). This, at least to me, is not a drawback because it brings the focus on the characters and not on the bodies of the girls. In other words if you're looking for a show that only focuses on hot high school girls then the last three episodes on the disc will be a bit of a disappointment, but check it out anyway i!
t's a pretty funny show. The comedy in this show is difficult to describe it isn't always perverted humor, not always ironic humor, and not always psychotic humor but some mix of all three. No matter what your favorite type of humor is this show will have it at one point or another, and hell it has a cute little love story to boot, which I'm sure will develop more fully in later episodes.

I was able to watch the show in both languages and each offers a really entertaining experience. There are two minor differences between the two formats. The first is that the English script adds some lines, but the lines don't take anything away from the story or change anything either. The second difference is that the English version is a little toned down from the Japanese version. However, it makes up for it at other times. Some "cleaner" lines in the sub are a little more "dirty" in the English version and vice-versa. In other words they both keep the same level of perversion at times but those are just different times thus changing some of the jokes. It makes it kind of fun to go and compare the two especially when you're stuck inside with a cold, as I was when I compared the two.

The acting in both version is great, however, I must admit that I may be a bit biased when it comes to David Lucas due to Bebop and some of his other works. The only real annoying part of the dub is that nearly every student sounds the same, but if you just forget about that this ends up being a damn good dub. Lucas can do some crazy stuff with his voice and does a good job with Onizuka's eccentric moments. The Japanese version is great, Onizuka's voice can be a little too high at times but that's no big deal. This is one of those rare series where both versions are great, but like I said I might be biased.

After watching the first disc all I could say was MORE! I've waited two months and soon the next disc will be released and I can say that I will be first in line to pick it up. I can't recommend this show enough; all my friends have become addicted and are as eager as I am to get the next disc. This show has it all comedy, love story, fan service, and a great dub. What else could you want?
