GTO Vol. #03

Release Date: June 18, 2002
GTO volume 3 is five more episodes of Onizuka goodness. This disc contains a two-episode arc about Nomura, and three episodes of a new arc. First I will do a quick run down on the technical stuff.
Overall it's a good disc on the technical side. Video had no real problems that I could see, and the stereo audio mix was solid, although not real varied. The menus are very nice, the usual Nightjar quality, although nothing extremely outstanding, the menus are fast and easy to navigate.
The packaging is fairly nice, although I have liked the designs for GTO quite a bit so far. The cover has a nice pic of Onizuka, and a filmstrip like scene from the show, it's a simple design, but it looks nice. The back cover has a general synopsis of the volume, and episode listing, with short descriptions.
The extras on this disc included creditless openings and clsoings, more of "Gone Wild" which is the Onizuka gone insane artwork in certain scenes, and some orginal sketches.
As for the content, GTO is a show that I've completely fallen in love with. This volume starts with Onizuka trying to cheer up Nomura, the F-cup girl in his class who had been put out of her clique in the previous volume. The first episode has Onizuka taking care of her over the course of a day after school, after he meets up with her in a park and starts playing with dolls (Also, Onizuka seems to be a master at building sand-sculptures). From there he and Nomura go to her house which is a ramen restaurant, and he meets with her parents and we see a little bit to her of her past. We also find out that one of the girls in Aizawa's clique enters her into a beauty pageant, but this episode is mostly to get a feel for Nomura and her situation.
The next episode concludes Nomura's arc with Onizuka taking Nomura and entering her into the same pageant as Aizawa, AND making it a class trip much to Uchiyamada's displeasure. Now in this pageant we see how much of a klutz Nomura really is, but we also see that Aizawa is quite the talent. As this episode progresses, we see how Onizuka's insight seems to be on the mark for the best of everyone, and have an interesting, and happy twist at the end.
I'll take the next three eps in one big summary. First we meet a new teacher, the math teacher Mr. Teshigawara. We first meet him when he bumps into Ms. Fuyutsuki and helps her pick up her dropped books. As the show develops we see some freighting things about Teshigawara, and his feeling for Fuyutsuki. Teshigawara decides to give Fuyutsuki and PC for her home use, and "tidies" up his home for her visit, when the door bell rings and he opens it, he see... Onizuka! After locking Onizuka out and having Onizuka pick his lock and let himself in, we find out that Onizuka came to pick up the computer for Fuyutsuki since she had trouble with one of her students. This leads Onizuka to see the mysterious rope and he wants to pull it, which would show what Teshigawara is hiding, Onizuka taunts Teshigawara until Teshigawara snaps and starts attacking Onizuka with a halogen lamp. After complete not hurting Onizuka and hurting himself quite badly, Onizuka leaves Teshigawara apartment!
. Teshigawara then calls on some friends, namely the parents of a girl he is tutoring to take Onizuka out. We also find out some rather interesting things about this spoiled rich girl who likes to be called queen.
After this call we get introduced to the Society of the Study of Victimization in Education, who promptly go after Onizuka. Basically, Onizuka is being himself (and wearing a water-squirting elephant suit), and really makes the group angry enough to get him fired. However, Teshigawara want to completely remove Onizuka from teaching and they make a condition, Onizuka can stay if he gets the highest score nationally on a junior high scholastic test. Well, Onizuka is an idiot and this leads to him staying with Fuyutsuki for a week, (and Onizuka in a one room apartment with a hot women is enough for a few laughs), and attempts to study. Eventually, after his students try some rash measures to help him, Onizuka declares that he will succeed and starts studying HIS way. The final ep concludes with Onizuka going to take the test, and something happens to our annoying rich-queen-girl and Onizuka is off to save the day.. Next episode!
This was a highly enjoyable disc of GTO goodness. The only drawback, we don't have volume 4 yet. This is highly recommended stuff, and GTO should be a must have for everyone.
