In order to patch up a hole in time-space, Adam Warlock “cut and pasted” the timeline in which he succumbs to his evil destiny and becomes The Magus, the head of the Universal Church of Truth onto our own. Thus, all possible timelines have been eliminated except for this one. The only way to stop these catastrophic events from taking place demands that the time-hopping Guardians of the Galaxy put their faith in the usually evil Kang the Conqueror. But are they willing to do what needs to be done in order to save the universe?
High stakes and high adventure – all of it in outer space and in-between time. I liked seeing Kang and his legion of Starhawks, all of whom were the last survivors of their timeline. Hey, Kang might be an evil time-travelling conqueror, but if there’s no time for him to conquer, then it’s not really worth it, is it? I’m a big fan of weird time-space anomaly kind of stories and Abnett and Lanning have done a good job with this one. The key to time travel is making sure your t’s are crossed and your i’s are dotted beforehand, and these guys have done an admirable job – mostly by avoiding all the usual traps of a story like this. And as usual, the book still has a great sense of humor.
I know a lot of folks think that an artist like Wesley Craig is “too cartoony” for a book like this. They’re wrong – he’s awesome.
*SPOILERS*
I’m always leery when characters get killed, and a few characters got killed here. I’m a big fan of the idea of “the price a hero must pay” and all that stuff, but since superheroes die on the rate of about 7 per month, it no longer has any impact whatsoever.
Now, this doesn’t necessarily qualify as a bad thing –But these days, whenever someone in a comic book dies, I don’t think “Oh no!”, I think “Oh, when will they be back, and what lame device will be used?” But I have faith that Abnett & Lanning will treat these deaths with the respect they deserve. The last two panels of the book are a good start.
A great wrap-up to a great storyline. I really don’t have any complaints and I feel like this book keeps getting better and better. I appreciate the extensive use of Marvel history and continuity that these guys have been throwing into this book every month as well as the sense of humor and fun. And a talking dog with a Russian accent never hurts. I feel like I’m reading a kooky comic version of an old Republic serial every month. Good stuff.
SPOLERY:
Look, if you're going to kill half the team, at least try to do it with a decent artist on board. Jeez, where did this guy learn to draw? Working on the "Teen Titans" cartoon?
The story was good, it just seemed to come from out of nowhere as the last two or three issues were rather filler-y. And that whole Church storyline ended kinda quick, huh? I kinda feel like War of Kings redically altered the direction of this book.
My only other problem is they killed off half the team, but I think they killed the wrong half!! Bug is OK and all, but how will I get on without Cosmo!!
