Guardians of the Galaxy Director Found?

Slither Director Mat Lead Production

By Robert T. Trate     August 20, 2012

Marvel is getting serious about "Guardians of the Galaxy."

First, they brought on a new writer to revamp the script, and now the studio has narrowed down the potential directors list to one prime candidate: James Gunn.

After a lengthy search that reportedly included Peyton Reed ("Bring It On") and Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden ("Half Nelson"), Marvel is in negotiations with the Gunn, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Gunn is mostly know for writing and directing low budget gene fare like "Slither" with Nathan Fillion and 2010's vigilante-themed "Super," with Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page. He's never done anything the size of "Guardians," and would continue the studio's history of picking non-traditional names like Jon Favreau ("Iron Man"), Kenneth Branagh ("Thor") and Alan Taylor ("Thor: The Dark World").

As a writer, Gunn penned the "Dawn of the Dead" remake and the superhero spoof "The Specials."

"Guardians" is part of Marvel's post-"Avengers" Phase 2, which will also include "Iron Man 3," "Thor: The Dark World" and "Captain America: Winter Solider." They will lead, in 2015, to "The Avengers 2," which will be directed by Joss Whedon.

The space film is expected to include heroes Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer and, in the villain role, the intergalactic baddie Thanos, who was glimpsed a the end of "The Avengers..

"Guardians of the Galaxy" is scheduled for release August 1, 2014.

Thanks to Chopsaki for the submission.

I like the idea of Gunn and his sense of humor.

Slither wasn't that bad of a movie when you realized it was a comedy instead of horror (and I'm half-way serious about that).  I'm down with giving this guy a chance.

I like Gunn too.  Slither was good fun and if you've never seen his shorts called PG Porn, you must check those out...Hilarious!

This is also the first confirmation that Thanos will the Big Bad in this movie. And once he's nailed down as the director I expect some names for the cast to start flying. Gunn probably already has some people in mind for some of the roles.

Super is pretty ... super, too!

It makes sense that Thanos will at least have a presence in this movie, as they really need to get across how powerful he is to a mainstream audience before he comes to earth in Avengers 2...

Wiseguy 8/20/2012 11:03:24 AM

redvector there's no confirmation here, just more speculation based the characters' story arcs. This is just further speculation based on that and the general concensus

redvector 8/20/2012 2:19:00 PM

Given that two of the characters Drax and Gamora both have a history with Thanos if it isn't confirmation I guess you could call it educated speculation.  But either way I'm still excited to see how quickly things are moving on GOTG. I wasn't expecting to hear any credible news about a director for at least a couple more months.

Agreed that it would be nise to flesh out Thanos, but I want to hear more, I just hope they do the series justace and it is not reduced to an advertisement for A2.

I'm sorry - i just don't have a clue to what this comic is about. But is that a racoon and a tree type person in the picture?
