Guardians of the Galaxy Update
Writers of the Comic Speak
By Robert T. Trate
August 14, 2012
Starting in 2008, Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning co-wrote 25 issues of a Guardians of the Galaxy comic book series, spinning directly out of their cosmic stories that started with Annihilation. Unlike previous versions of the title which depicted a team in the 31st century, their series was set in the modern-day Marvel Universe, featuring cosmic characters including Star-Lord, Drax, Gamora, Groot and Rocket Raccoon.
At Comic-Con earlier this month, Marvel Studios officially confirmed a long-rumored 2014 live-action film titled Guardians of the Galaxy, which, based on the concept art released by Marvel, draws from Abnett and Lanning's version of the team and will include each of the five characters mentioned above. Newsarama reached out to DnA for comment, and received the following statement from Lanning:
"Dan and I are really excited to see the Guardians of the Galaxy make it to the big screen, especially as it would appear to be the iteration of the team established during our run on the title. We will be eager to see the film along with all the fans of cosmic stories.
"One thing we'd like to go on the record with is that we owe a huge debt of thanks to the great stories of our predecessors, in particular, Jim Starlin and Keith Giffen, these guys are the giants on whom we stood.
"Beyond that, we're sorry but we really don't know anything, so we can't make any further comment."
The Guardians of the Galaxy movie from Marvel Studios is scheduled for release on August 1, 2014, with no director or cast announced at this point.
