I loved that book when I was a kid; I think I still have it somewhere in my attic. I wonder if they're going to have the movie set in the 1930's like the book.

20th Century Fox and director Mark Waters have found the female lead to star opposite Jim Carrey in Mr. Popper's Penguins, an adaptation of Richard and Florence Atwater's classic children's tale. Variety reports that Carla Gugino (Sin City, upcoming Suckerpunch) is the latest to join the production, though we're not sure which role she'll be covering. Given her status she's likely the wife of Carrey's title character. With the production sitting in development hell for sometime, Waters was recently charged with helming based on a script by Sean Anders and John Morris.
Plot Concept: Carrey will play Mr. Popper, a house painter whose dreams of Arctic exploration prompt him to write letters to real explorers. When one of them responds with a gift of one dozen penguins, Popper is left with the challenge of dealing with the Arctic birds. Soon he opens a stage act called Popper's Performing Penguins and goes on tour, creating mayhem at every stop. The trade doesn't specify Guingo's role but she could be female lead in the form of Mrs. Popper, the hero's wife who helps to deal with the penguins.
