Guillermo del Toro talks HELLBOY 2

Guillermo del Toro recently talked to the Latino Review about his recently green lit project, HELLBOY 2.

Talking about the story, Del Toro said it would be "sort of the magical world declaring war on the human world. The first one was dealing with a much more urban environment, and the second one is more in a mythical type of environment, more magical. So hopefully it's closer to some of the aspects of the comic book that we couldn't portray in the first one."

Del Toro went on to say that shooting wouldn't begin until late April or early May, "We have a long prep ahead of us. We're going to shoot this one in Budapest, in Hungary and we're going to shoot a little bit in London, and we're going to do pre-production and post-production in London. ... We definitely have all the regulars: Hellboy, Abe Sapien and Liz Sherman are back. We have two characters from the fantasy world, which are a prince and a princess that we will be casting very soon."

Universal picked up the film after it was left in limbo with Revolution Studios out of business. Revolution Studios made the original film via it's distribution deal with Columbia Pictures.

HELLBOY 2 is aiming for a summer 2008 release.

Good news; I'm looking forward seeing the right hand of doom do some more damage!

Prince and princess? I have never read the comic and I have no idea what he's talking about. Loved the first one, hope this is as good.

I think I'm the only one who thought "Hellboy" was campy and stupid.

But I've got every issue of the comic...which rocks.

campy and stupid?.... really, I thought it was awesome, and very true to the characters, action and humor of the comic. This plot sounds even better, a magic world would really give them freedom to have some real fun with some of the better elements from the comic, plus room for tons of creatures and effects. I'm in, pass the paMcakes.

I actually watched the first movie again last night (The Director's Cut, which is better than the theatrical version - a bit more fleshed out), and still enjoy it immensely. I can see however how they "Hollywood-ised" the plot somewhat. It was a fairly conventional plot structure, and the way some of the character dynamics played out was a little corny, BUT overall, it is the excellent characterisations that make it such a great film. Ron Perlman is great, and I hope he gets even more screen-time in the sequel. I also like hearing Del Toro saying it will be closer to the comics. Can't wait!

Guillermo of the Bull is a good director. I'm eager to see Ron Perlman come back as Hellboy.

I remember when I first saw the stills of Ron as Hellboy and thought how hooky he looked, being a big Mignola fan, and really did not expect a lot...it was strange how amazing the flick was and how true to the story telling (humor included)it really was...and honestly, what a limited audience/ appeal of this subgenre...I am so happy that Del Toro can create a sequel...
