Bandai Entertainment tweeted this morning that they're putting out the two Gurren Lagann movies on DVD in July exclusively (for now, presumably) through their online store site. The release is set for July 1st for the first movie, which times it nicely with Anime Expo of course, while the second is slated for July 30th. They're being offered in regular and limited editions. Both editions feature Japanese 5.1 language with subtitles and a theatrical trailer. The limited edition goes for $20 more at $49.99 and contains:

  1. A Bonus DVD of "Gurren Lagann Parallel Works" Music Video Part 1, created by Gurren Lagann creators!! (Part 1 includes 4 music videos)
  2. 32-page booklet, a replica of deluxe Movie Program Book that were sold at theaters in Japan
  3. 2 postcards that were included in Japanese Special Edition DVD

Plot Summary: This is the story of a man who has yet to realize what destiny holds in store for him… Far in the future, human live underground quietly and restlessly for hundreds of years, suffering from frequent earthquake and land subsidence. In Giha Village, one of such underground communities, there are two young men. One is called Simon who is shy and naïve, the other is called Kamina who believes in existence of a “surface” world above their heads. Destiny of the two starts moving drastically when the ceiling falls, and a gigantic “Gunmen” and a beautiful girl Yoko with a superconductive rifle come from the surface. Kamina, Simon and Yoko get on “Lagann” that Simon digs out from the ground, and jump out to the surface!

However, the surface is not such a dreamland as Kamina imagined. The world is reined by the Spiral King and his army beastmen. Kamina and Simon, along with their comrades challenge the Spiral King to change the desperate world to the one with hope for the future by Gurren Lagann!

The second movie mirrors the release of the first in pretty much every way:

  1. Includes Bonus DVD of "Gurren Lagann Parallel Works" Music Video Part 2, created by Gurren Lagann creators!! (Part 2 includes 4 music videos)
  2. 32-page booklet, a replica of deluxe Movie Program Book that were sold at theaters in Japan
  3. Postcard that was included in Japanese Special Edition DVD

Valiantly persevering through the traumatic aftermath of Kamina’s death, Team Dai-Gurren collectively destroys the Four Generals and finally reaches Teppelin, the royal capital, where Simon wins a fierce battle against the Spiral King, Lordgenome. Seven years have passed after the battle of Teppelin… Humans have since reclaimed the surface of the earth and enjoy an unprecedented period of peace and prosperity. However, humanity’s increasing population growth triggers the sudden emergence of an unknown, powerful enemy. The fearsome, manipulative power of the mysterious Anti-Spiral proves too overwhelming for humans to even fight back. When everyone becomes desperate and loses hope, Team Dai-Gurren members reunite to stand up once again!

No English dub? Bandai sure knows how to disapoint fans. I really love the dub, I'll just stick with the TV series.

Actually, Puck85, Bandai's handling the distribution. Aniplex USA is the one in charge of this (and other future) release(s).

Note to Hideki "Henry" Goto: Have you learned nothing from Bandai Visual USA's plight? Do you not realize that by selling it exclusively on Bandai's store and nowhere else, you're setting yourself up for failure? Look, I'm not sure if Aniplex handling their own releases stateside (and sans dub) is their way of saying "We can do it better than your American distributors can", but history has taught me that whenever companies go this route, they're making a costly mistake. Look at Toei and Bandai Visual, for example- notice how they tried to go it alone, and now neither one's currently around? I wish you the best of luck (and by that, I mean, "See you in the unemployment line in two years").

Now that I think about it, I think this song sums up how similar Mr. Goto's strategy is to (now-defunct Bandai Visual USA CEO) Tatsunori Konno's game plan:

The Gurren Lagann movies suck anyway. It's not worth dubbing them when they're just edited scenes from the TV series.
