According to the Hollywood Reporter, Gwyneth Paltrow has signed on to join the cast of Iron Man.  She will join Robert Downey Jr and Terrence Howard in the cast.

Paltrow will play Stark's personal assistant Virginia Pepper Potts, one of the few people in Stark's life who can go toe-to-toe with him and who occasionally serves as his conscience. The pair also share a secret attraction to each other.

"We've been casting for a long time, and we really took our time in finding the perfect person," said Marvel president of production Kevin Feige. "We've talked to our prototype for Pepper, and we kept mentioning 'someone like Gwyneth Paltrow,' and it was relatively recently that it came to our attention that maybe we should go to Gwyneth. Her representatives let us know that she wanted to do a movie like this; a few phone calls later from all parties involved, and over the weekend it happened.

Jon Favreau will direct the film and Avi Arad is producing.  Production is set to get underway in March.

KJ's Take: I wasn't to excited about this film when it was first announced, but they have knocked the casting out of the proverbial park.  I can't wait for a trailer.

i'm excited, in all honesty, if there was a movie that showed me that faverau can direct it was "elf." Obviously it is a completely different genre, but I have faith in faverau, he just seems to really be sincere on what he works. I am excited the cast is probably one of the best for a super hero ever, each one brings something different, and we all know that they can act. I think Downey was an incredibly great cast choice for stark.

NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! That is my first reaction, but you know what? I have faith in Faverau. I think he will make one hell of an Iron Man movie. I am excited to see this movie.

This is very interesting casting, but all the casting has been. I`m a little surprised Gwyneth would do a comic book movie, but I like her. She`s a very good actress and I can definitely see Downey and her going at it.
I am really curious to see who he Jon casts as the Mandarin. I wonder if he`ll get someone like Chow Yung Fat or Ken Watanabe or even the dude from Lost.(and yes, I know one is chinese, japanese, and korean but if they can get a chinese woman to play a japanese person(Memoirs), its not too much of a stretch for this flick

That is some REAL crappy casting. Paltrow as Pepper?? BAD BAD BAD.

They should have gotten Alyson Hannigan.

Oh Snap! That is amazing! I'm surprised that she's up for a comic book movie, but I'm not complaining. This is great news. Ups the ante on this movie big time. She is truly one of the best actresses of her generation. Every piece of news on this movie just makes it sound better and better. Anyone see the Stan Winston concept art of the armor? Damn!

BLECH! It will be impossible to watch the movie without imagining her giving that oh-so-tiresome Paltrow eye-roll when off camera and telling her friends how she is slumming in a stupid American comic book movie.... Sheesh.

Man, just think...if Stan Lee owned the sole rights to all of these characters he'd be a GODZILLIONAIRE. I feel bad for him - it's one of the reasons why I chose not to enter video games/comic books... I would hate forfeiting my ideas to a faceless, thankless bohemoth.

But this movie is gonna be a sure hit and may be the 2nd highest grossing comic film behind Spiderman. I never followed the comic, but the animated show was my favorite behind Spiderman and X-men. Maybe the Mandarin could be played by Jet Li, Watanabe, or some new Japanese/Hong Kong star trying to make their break into American films.

It looks like Marvel really wants to make a huge splash with its first self-financed film. I'm really optimistic with the casting and Favreau at the helm. Paltrow's an excellent actress, and played spunky pretty well in Sky Captain.

Paltrow is crap. She has very little range as an actress and was THE WORST part of Sky-Captain. I don't know why there's any suprise to her taking it - the stigma of "comic" movies has diminished lately...
Her best role is in se7en.. at the end of the film.
