Haggis Looking For RANGER'S APPRENTICE

A day after United Artists made an interim deal with the WGA, the studio is now looking to get the ball rolling forward while other studios are left out in the cold. The smaller branch, led by Cruise and Wagner, had hopes to adapt the childrens fantasy series RANGER'S APPRENTICE to the big screen with plans for Oscar-winning director Paul Haggis (Crash) to helm. Well, the project stalled out because of the WGA strike but that's no longer an obstacle. Flanagan's first book in the fantasy series, "The Ruins of Gorlan," was released in Australia in November 2004 and seven months later in the United States. Seven books have been released to date.

Plot Concept: Follows the adventures of an orphan named Will who becomes an apprentice ranger and fights to keep the mythical kingdom of Araluen safe from invaders, traitors and other dangers with the help of his master Halt.

The formula sounds old and tired. Never read any of the books, but does it always have to be a kid. I guess adults are too dumb to figure out when stuff is happening around them. I want to see how much money they're going to gamble on this after some of the failures of last year.

Wow! Another epic fantasy about wizards, elves, kingdoms, kinights, dragons, etc. based on a book series. I can hardly contain my enthusiasm. I just hope its as good as Eragon and The Seeker! *sarcasm*

Um, Wiseguy, yes, usually for children's books, the protagonist is a kid.

Seriously, though, this does sound like very familiar territory. Even the title of the series sounds very "Aragon's sidekick back before he became King."

I can't agree with you more Wiseguy. Granted this IS a kids fantasy book but it seems like everytime hollywood does a fantasy movie lately they make a kid the main character. I'm sick of it and judging from the box office numbers to a lot of those movies the audience agrees. Instead of trying smart, well done movies like LOTR they are trying to find the next Harry Potter movies. They are going to kill the fantasy genre in hollywood and there are a lot of good fantasy books out there that don't have kids as the protagonist.

Eh, I don't want to judge it outright, but the kid thing is a little done. If Hollywood wants some more fantasy, why the hell can't they check out some Forgotten Realms or Dragonlance? I love the Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends series. They're supposed to making an animated "Dragons of Autumn Twilight" (the first in the Dragonlance Chronicles) coming directly to DVD, but haven't heard anything else from it yet. It's got voices of Michael Rosenbaum, Keifer Sutherland, Michelle Trachtenberg, Lucy Lawless, and others.

Animated Dragonlance comes out next tuesday TKay.

I don't mind these sort of fantasy movies but it is becoming severely dissapointing that they keep adapting every book that has a random 8-12 year old hero in it.

Dragonlance and Realms could both be awesome live action but with the failures of the previous DND movies that shit is not happening anytime soon. There are so many fantasy series I think could be adapted well to the big screen if they took a little time and patience. Some I would really like to see would be

Shannara (Terry BRooks - Currently in pre-production we will see if it every makes it out of that stage).
The Elenium Trilogy (David Eddings)
The Dark Sword Trilogy (Margaret Weis & Hickman)
The Sovereign Stone Trilogy (Weis & Hickman)
The Wayfarer Redemption Series (Sara Douglas)

Those are just a few of the ones I can think of offhand that I think would be nice to see on the big screen.

Harry Potter will be done in a few years and Warner bros does have the rights to Shannara so perhaps they could turn that into a nice franchise when the Harry Potter cash cow ends.

People clearly want to see these types of movies, they just need to start choosing better and putting more work into doing them right.

The very first thing I thought of was , "did someone write a spinoff book about Aragorn as a Ranger?"
That would have been pretty cool. This doesn`t.
