Box Office Report

HALLOWEEN Slashes Labor Day Record

By: Jarrod Sarafin, News Editor
Date: Sunday, September 02, 2007

Most insiders consider this a 4-day holiday box office weekend but I’ll turn in the 3-day weekend numbers now. The three day numbers have Rob Zombie’s Halloween taking the top spot this weekend and breaking the Labor Day Record. The remake/re-imagining of the John Carpenter film pulled in 26.5 million in box office receipts beating the previous record holder, Transporter 2, which held it with 20.5 on 09/02/05. As you can see, Labor Day records certainly isn’t as big in business as other holiday totals which isn’t surprising with school back in session.

Following behind in 2nd place for the is Superbad which pulled in 12.2 million in receipts over the 3-day weekend. Judd Apatow continues to impress studios and insiders with his profit margins continuing to rise. He created this film at a cost of only 20 mil and has pulled in 89.0 mil over the course of the last 3 weeks with little to no dropout percentages from week-to-week. His comedy only dropped 32.4% from last weekend’s numbers. Take into effect Apatow’s highly successful Knocked Up film which was created at a budget of only 30 mil going onward to gross 148.1 mil domestically and you will see why Apatow is becoming a powerhouse inside Hollywood.

Landing in third place despite opening two days ahead of Halloween is the Rogue Pictures comedy, Balls of Fury, which took in 11.6 million in receipts. The film featuring comedic antics surrounding a ping-pong tournament opened up in 3,052 theaters this weekend, had a running time of only 1 hr and 30 minutes, a PG-13 Rating & had a two day head start. None of these factors seemed to matter against Halloween & Superbad making the debut shaky at best for Rogue.

Continuing to hold steady and strong (only dropping 18.4%) is Universal’s next installment featuring Jason Bourne grabbing 4th place for the holiday weekend. The Bourne Ultimatum took in another 10.1 million in its fifth week of release, a weekend sum that has it so close to the 200.0 mil barrier domestically. In fact, it will have crossed that mark by tomorrow morning being only $400,000 away from the mark with 199.6 mil in domestic cash. It’s yet to be released in most foreign markets having an overseas take of only 52.5 million but that doesn’t stop this film from already being known as a very clear success for Universal. With a budget of only 110 mil, it’s already close to doubling that with domestic tickets alone.

New Line is edging ever so near the break-even point with Rush Hour 3 which kicks its way into 5th place this weekend. The third installment in the franchise pulled in another 8.5 mil in its fourth week of release placing its total domestic take at 120.4 million. With a budget of 140 mil, the film will break even but won’t be considered a smash-hit by any means unless it does well in foreign markets. So far, it has 40.2 mil in overseas sales leading to a worldwide total of 160.6 mil.

A film which is already highly successful no thanks to domestic totals is Universal’s Mr. Bean’s Holiday which found its way into 6th place. The comedy starring Rowan Atkinson pulled in only 5.9 mil in its second week of release here but has already grabbed up 189.2 million in foreign sales long before hitting the states. It has a worldwide take of 208.1 mil.

Following behind Bean is MGM’s adaptation of The Nanny Diaries which lands in 7th place with only 5.1 million in its second week of release. The film most likely isn’t performing up to expectations given its respectable release of 2,636 theaters and grabbing only 15.2 million in sales so far...

The revenge thriller, Death Sentence, starring Kevin Bacon opened up in 8th place this weekend only pulling in 4.1 million in sales. The only excuse for this dud of a performance is perhaps its theater release. Fox opened the film in only 1,822 theaters.

The 9th and 10th places are more flops and failures, WAR & Stardust. The action film WAR starring Jason Statham & Jet Li dropped to 9th place in its second weekend pulling in only 3.6 million in 2,277 theaters. It has only 16.4 mil in domestic receipts. Following right behind in 10th place is the clear Paramount bomb, Stardust, which pocketed only 3.0 million in receipts. The film with a budget of 70 mil has grabbed only 31.0 mil in four weeks of release. Paramount has begun pulling it out of theaters canceling 573 prints over the weekend.

I loved Balls of Fury. It was a guilty pleasure. I don't think the film cost much to make, so it shouldn't be dubbed a failure. If it even makes $30 million, it will still make a profit. I had no interest in seeing Halloween. No matter who is directing, it would just be more of the same. This series ran out of interesting things to say about MIchael Myers years ago.

almostunbiased • Sep 02, 2007, 06:57pm •
yeah, you would have had to pay me to see halloween. About $50 would have done it.
As for balls I'll wait to rent if at all.

superfrank78 • Sep 02, 2007, 08:01pm •
Yes re-imagining is a good word for what is not a good remake of Halloween. Everything that was right and perfect about the story, the set-up and the character of Michael Myers was thrown out the window and given the Rob Zombie trailer park white trash treatment and somehow this family lived in a good neighborhood with typical middle class americans. His earlier movies are great in their own way but he strayed too far from the source material for this.
Balls of Fury was 'ok' not as bad as 'HotRod' but light years away from being the next DodgeBall or any Apatow project.
Death Sentence was doomed as soon as they decided that 'Death Sentence' would be the title. Just remake 'Death Wish' without insulting a movie lover's intelligence with poor rip-offs...oh wait Jodie Foster's rip-off has yet to open(rip off on I spit on your grave)

GentlemenDeath • Sep 02, 2007, 08:06pm •
I guess I am in the majority here, but I found Zombie's version of Halloween very well done. The original is better, of course, but this was still put together very well. I am planning on seeing it again in theatres.

Bodhi • Sep 02, 2007, 08:14pm •
I never thought I would say this, being a Michael Myers fan and all, but Rob Zombie is actually a bigger butcher than the original boogie man...

And just because you liked it doesn't place you in the 'majority'. Not everyone who paid to see it like it. It just means that you were in the group of people who were curious enough to play $7-9 to see it. From what I saw, most people who walked out afterwards were hardly happy with what they saw.

GentlemenDeath • Sep 02, 2007, 08:40pm •
All I know is that I enjoyed this and felt I got my moneys worth and was not in the slightest dissapointed with it.

Now, when I saw Spiderman 3, I felt ripped off and wanted my money back. That was a waste of time.

jon41380 • Sep 02, 2007, 08:58pm •
I saw it on Friday, I liked all of it except the lead actress and her friends. Other than that, it's my second favorite film by Zombie (Rejects was great). Everyone at the theatre I saw it at seemed to really like it, they clapped at the end. There were a lot of screams through out the movie and contrary to some reviews I had read, I thought Zombie did a good job at building tension and not relying on gore. I thought it was good overall. In my opinion, if you even paid money to see Balls of Fury any opinion you might have on film is worthless. The movie to see in theatres right now is the documentary The King of Kong. Now that's a great film!

superfrank78 • Sep 02, 2007, 09:13pm •
Well I guess seeing 'Balls" for free still gives me a leg to stand on when I say this:
Zombie's version isn't bad- if the name of the killer was something else this movie would go down as one of the best slasher flicks but unfortunately it is Michael Myers and what made Michael so great a character(so great it was ripped off for every slasher film after) is that it was a boy from a well off family, seemingly normal and he snaps and stabs his sister to death leading to not speaking and snapping again after he turns 21. The original left you thinking and using your imagination to fill in the spaces where you didn't get to see reasons why. But this version- well who wouldn't snap with a whore stripper for a mom,a dead beat step dad who verbally and physically abuses Michael, classmates who batter him with abuse,a slut foul mouthed sister....and somehow this family of white trash is nestled in a suburban neighborhood in Haddonfield Illinois. The magic of the original was everything Carpenter didn't give you..this version gave you everything and left nothing to human imagination.
and yes King of Kong is a must see.

GentlemenDeath • Sep 02, 2007, 09:23pm •
One of the MANY things I liked about this movie was that it was a slasher and not another fucking torture flick to add to the Horror genres bad run it has been having for the past couple of years; If not EVER.

superfrank78 • Sep 02, 2007, 10:19pm •
Yes please no more Eli Roth movies,no more 'Saw'(it has run its course), no 'Touristas' 2 etc...
I am fine with remakes of : Prom Night,Sleepaway Camp,Motel Hell,10 to Midnight and Silent Rage
Stop with Texas Chainsaw remakes and don't touch or remake Nightmare on Elm St or Friday the 13th
