HALO Not Dead at Microsoft

Microsoft still wants a Halo movie.

Microsoft is once again reminding us that a Halo movie is still in the works over on their side. They're just not in any particular rush to get it made at the moment. Years after Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp (District 9) ultimately failed with their efforts to get a feature film in theaters, Halo franchise development director Frank O'Connor tells Variety the company is still developing a standalone feature based on original story concepts by screenwriters Alex Garland, Stuart Beattie, D.B. Weiss and Josh Olson.

"We're still interested in making an excellent 'Halo' movie," O'Connor said. "We've created an awful lot of documentation and materials to support a feature film. We have a good idea of what kind of story we want to tell, but won't move on it until there's a great reason to do it. We're in no particular hurry. The film would likely be a standalone story and not "a verbatim retelling of the game."

With "Halo: Reach" hitting consoles on September 14, the company is also planning future TV series outlets for the franchise.

Microsoft should just get into the movie buisness and do it themselves ala Marvel. I really hope these delays aren't simply due to distribution rights.

This article neglected to mention that a tv series is also a possiblity for Halo.  If so it would need a huge budget to do it right.  Same with a film as well though.   Also, I read that one minor obstacle for the eventual movie is that Master Chief has no "face" to identify with since he's always in his helmet.  Bungie has sort of created this mystery they will never be able to pay off to the content of everyone regarding what MC looks like.

It's too bad Jackson and co. weren't able to get it done cuz I'm sure it would have been amazing.  I hope they stay involved whenever Microsoft decides to pull the trigger on it.

@ddiaz28

A TV series is probably out of the question, since even Lucas has given up on the Star Wars TV series due to budgetary reasons.

If I remember right, the movie fell through when MS couldn't get any studio to agree to their strict demands. They should just do it independantly like Lucas or Cameron. When is studio involvement a good thing anyway?

Those live action shorts they do have been pretty impressive looking

They should try and get it back into Niell's hands with Peter involved some how, that way Peter can do hobbit but Niell can have WETA at his disposal or something like that.

And so it did gutsmgee.  Thanks.  Not sure how I missed reading that.  Must have skipped the last line.  Oh well.  I just love sounding like a jackass!

But jdiggity is proably right about the budgetary restraints.  Unless a cable network like HBO decided to do it.  Then they could get enough money.  I'd still rather see a series of films.  They would be more epic.  And like you said, the shorts they have done are great in and of themselves, so why not go ahead on their own?

@tiredjay- lucas may have given up on a live action star wars but lets not forget about the clone wars now about to hit season 3

I can see a tv series but lets let a movie in theaters launch it. That would be something rather new to see.

Microsoft knows they have a winner in their hands. I sort of admire that they're not in a rush to get this done to capitalize on it right now and are instead waiting til "there's a great reason to do it".

True, MS caused the original film deal to fall through with their  demands but IMO that shows their confidence in their property. I hope they do as chopsaki says and they go at it alone once they feel they have the right story.
