HALO Script Goes Out to Studios

By: News Editor
Date: Tuesday, June 07, 2005
Source: Variety

Messengers outfitted as the space marine from Microsoft's HALO visited the various studios in the Los Angeles area to deliver copies of the script based on the bestselling videogame.

Microsoft paid screenwriter Alex Garland $1 million to write the draft and hopes to have the film in production by January 2006.

Variety reports, "According to numerous studio people, Microsoft and its reps at CAA are seeking an advance of $10 million against 15% of the gross and strict control of development. Winning studio would have to follow a "bible" created by game developers to make sure any changes to the script don't alter the universe established in the first two HALO games that will continue in future sequels for the Xbox."

New Line and DreamWorks have already passed on the project.

Hmmm...could be interesting. Lord knows Hollywood is out of ideas.

Dude, that's what I've been saying all along. They're gonna have a hard time doing this one any justice. I don't think I'm really all that syked to see it. Cuz if it's not great it's gonna really balls.

I know I'm preaching to the chior here, but I have seen your frustration on this issue also possum. I swear I cannot remember the last GOOD movie I saw, much less a great movie. Halo has awesome potential that if done correctly will be good. But when has Hollywood succeeded in doing a game to movie right? They are so bankrupt for ideas they are taking Doom and trying to bank on its legions of loyal fans to make a quick buck. I'm hoping they are not going that way with it...but we shall see.

Come on. There are lots of great video game movies. Who can forget Tomb Raider 1? And the sequel that was the rare critically acclaimed success? Wait- no, that's not a good example. But we'll always have the The house of the Dead and... Resident Evil 2? No... let's try that again... There was... Okay I need to think on this. I'll be back later.

Hahahaha...we forgot Mortal Kombat, Mario Bros.,oh and my favorite Double Dragon...now there was a performance to believe. Emillio Estavez did not have to worry about acting sober in that one. You had to be on something to watch it thats for sure. Hollywood cant possibly mess up Halo if they stick to this "bible" the developers are making. Cant wait to see The Rock stumble through what is sure to be the coriest lines ever in Doom.

OH! Street Fighter! Yeah! That one... sucked. Damnit! But in all seriousness, Mortal Combat was good fun, even if it was cheesy. And Resident Evil 1 was decent. It's Casablanca to the rest of them.

I think there's one important thing to remember when making these movies. The further you get away from the orginal source material the worse your film tanks. Take Sin City for instance they hardly wrote a script as much as copied the comic verbatium.

Now, with Halo you can't really copy every CGI cutscene to the letter, because one it leaves out stuff from cutscene to cutscene and two it'd be a short movie. I really hope Bungie gets in the thick of things and is a real pain in the ass when these Hollywood types start going "hey let's make Cortana a real woman and make her the love intrest for MC." Because, it's the little itty bitty changes that make these movies ridiculously unwatchable.

The real deal here is, why does Microsoft need to go to a studio to have a movie made??? Aren't they like the one of the richest companies in the world? Why don't they just make it themselves and shop a finished product to studios... Seems to me that Microsoft would be able to have the total control they want on how this movie is made if they did that... If I owned a movie studio and saw some Halloween dressed character coming into my office like this situation, I would laugh my ass off at these demands...

Microsoft could easily make this movie on their and then go around to studios with the finished product seeing who would like to distribute it...
To me Microsoft is just trying to get richer and richer....

Oh yeah, Resident Evil 1, has by far been the best video game to movie to date

• Jun 08, 2005, 05:27am •
Yup Resident Evil 1 was very good. And the hottie Michelle Rodriguez was in it! Anyways, that was the last game to movie adaptation that kept fairly close to the source material. Is it just me or is the 600 billion dollar(last years numbers) video game industry sucking up all the original script and story writers? I think Hollywood is so desparate for SOMETHING that if the guys from microsoft showed up in an ape suit they would not care. My prediction as to who will shoot the movie...Rogue Films or Lions Gate. Hollywood needs to stop treating video games like toys...thinking they are a compliment to a movie. They need to rethink that video games can make great movies if the story is adhered to. We'll see with Halo and Doom.

I just hope no one ever thinks to make a Turok movie...that movie would drive me over the edge. But, seriously I think I want to go rest House of the Dead again just because of you guys...that movie makes me laugh and laugh and laugh.
